[Video] Ever wonder how to compile Android from Source Code? XDA shows it?s an easy Process

I am a devout Android user. I?d even like to think of myself as a somewhat?advanced user, considering I?ve been on board since the G1, and I?ve flashed more ROM?s on more devices than I can even keep up with, but I am by no means an Android developer.

I?ve downloaded thousands of apps, but couldn?t actually make one to save my life with a gun to my head. Many of my Android brothers and sisters can attest, there isn?t many things in life that can make a person feel better than flashing an awesome ROM on their phone and spending the next 4 hours setting everything up and dissecting the functionality like nobody?s business.

Have you ever wondered how these custom ROM?s come about? If the answer to that question is yes, you might want to check out the latest episode of XDA TV, in which Shen gives a quick video walk-through of the simplicity of compiling Android from the source code AOSP tree.

Of course, these are only the first steps to actually creating custom ROM?s ? there are many intricate methodologies used by Android developers to perfect their art, but this is an amazing lesson that shows you don?t have to be a mad scientist to figure out how to get started. If you?ve got 6 minutes of spare time, check the video out below:

For further information, make sure to?check out the?discussion thread.

PS ? Don?t mess with Shen (or anyone from XDA) or you will get burned in front of millions of people on an episode of XDA TV, just like Pejitijor. Epic lulz!

Mac Miller has had a hell of a year, and the rising rap star from Pittsburgh will cap it all off in Times Square when he rings in 2012 performing on MTV's "NYE in NYC 2012," airing live at 11 p.m. ET/10 p.m. CT on December 31.

There are only a few more days left in 2011, and yes, anything can happen, but when reflecting back on the year in which he became a star, Mac has one event in particular that he considers a highlight: his November 8 debut album release and the fan reaction that landed him atop the Billboard albums chart a week later, after selling more than 144,000 copies.

"The whole album coming out was probably the #1 highlight," Mac told MTV News of his independently released Blue Slide Park. "I remember putting out the album and being really curious about what critics had to say about it because I felt like I made this album from the heart and it was by far my best work."

Unfortunately for Mac, the album reviews did not satisfy his expectations. To him, it seemed that the critics just didn't get it, and he began doubting whether or not he put out the right album. That was until his fans reassured him that he made the right move.

"All people of all different ages everywhere coming up to me and genuinely telling me how much they like the album," Mac recalled. "That's definitely the highlight, seeing this music that I've created and just seeing how much more powerful people are than publications. That's who I make music for."

Watch MTV's "NYE in NYC 2012," featuring Mac Miller, Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato and more, live on December 31 at 11 p.m. ET/10 p.m. CT on MTV! Head over to NYE.MTV.com for more info.

Japan hopes Europe will boost rescue mechanism: sources (Reuters)

TOKYO (Reuters) ? Europe should boost the total firepower of its rescue fund and frontload its funding to send a positive signal to investors and international partners that it is determined to solve its debt crisis, Japanese officials said on Monday.

Japan has repeatedly expressed its willingness to help Europe contain its debt crisis, but has also stressed it wanted to see a convincing action plan before making any firm commitments.

"Japan like other non-euro countries is prepared to do something, but unless European countries take decisive action it is hard to make those steps effective," a senior Japanese government official said.

Lifting the combined size of the current bailout fund (EFSF) and the new permanent European Stability Mechanism (ESM) beyond the current 500 billion euros would be a major step and an encouraging signal.

"We expect European countries will review the combined ceiling of 500 billion euro of EFSF (European Financial Stability Fund) and ESM in a very positive manner," the official told Reuters.

European leaders agreed in Brussels earlier this month to accelerate the launch of the ESM by a year to mid-2012 with an effective lending capacity of 500 billion euros ($650 billion), but questions have arisen about the size and timing of contributions.

Japanese officials said that while bringing forward the launch of the fund was positive, a more ambitious ceiling might be needed given that Europe had little success in bringing in outside investors to boost the firepower of the EFSF fund.

"The leveraging of EFSF money by investors' money doesn't look like materializing very well. That's why they are frontloading the ESM and the review of the ceiling of 500 billion euro is very important," said the official, who declined to be named.

"European countries may think what they've already decided is a major step forward, but markets want Europe to act more decisively."

German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble signaled over the weekend that Europe's biggest economy and its main paymaster could boost its contribution to the fund and support its swift launch, although any decisions would have to be made in January.

Since the beginning of the crisis more than two years ago, European leaders have orchestrated bailouts of Greece, Ireland and Portugal, set up a euro zone rescue fund and earlier this month agreed to boost the International Monetary Fund's resources by 150 billion euros.

Still, throughout the crisis that has also shaken Italy and Spain, investors have repeatedly been left with the impression that whatever was agreed in Brussels was too little, too late.

Japan, the United States, Canada and others have voiced their frustration with Europe's piecemeal progress and repeatedly called for bold steps that would create effective "firewalls" around the euro zone's weaker, heavily indebted economies.

Another Japanese government official reiterated on Monday that Tokyo, which led an international effort to boost the IMF's coffers after the Lehman crisis, was open to contributing more but that its decision depended on Europe's actions.

Officials in Tokyo said markets needed to see both effective defenses in the form of funds sufficient enough to cover the crisis-hit nations' financing needs and commitments to fiscal discipline.

"Fiscal discipline is very important. Even if we provide firewalls we need fiscal discipline," the official said.

While Tokyo has repeatedly voiced concern about developments in Europe, its plans to buy Chinese government debt did not reflect lack of confidence in the euro or U.S. dollar assets, another official said.

He said the plans, discussed during Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda's visit to Beijing, aimed at strengthening economic ties between the two nations rather than diversifying Japan's exchange reserves, mostly made up of dollar and euro assets.

"The idea is not to depart from the dollar or U.S. government bonds or the euro, so it should not be interpreted as diversification of our portfolio," the official said.

"I don't have any doubts about creditworthiness of the dollar or U.S. government bonds. The dollar will remain the most important currency for the foreseeable future."

Prostate Cancer Active Surveillance Conference: Two Perspectives

NEXT ARTICLE

{MedPageToday Blogs via BioPortfolio} By Gary Schwitzer

Here are two perspectives on the recent National Institutes of Health State-of-the-Science Conference: Role of Active Surveillance in the Management of Men With Localized Prostate Cancer.

The first is from one of our HealthNewsReview.org medical editors, Richard M. Hoffman, M.D., M.P.H., Professor of Medicine at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine and Staff Physician at the New Mexico Veterans Affairs Health Care System.? Hoffman spoke at the conference on ?Improving the Communication of the Benefits and Harms of Treatment Strategies.? He writes these after-thoughts:

?I just returned from attending an NIH State-of-the-Science conference on active surveillance (AS).? AS is a strategy for monitoring men with low-risk prostate cancers using PSA tests, digital rectal examinations, and prostate biopsies in order to avoid or delay undergoing active treatment with surgery or radiation.? The rationale for AS is that many men with low-risk cancers are unlikely to ever suffer any clinical problems.? Therefore, aggressively treating these men, which can adversely affect urinary, sexual, and bowel function, is unnecessary.? However, identifying patients who are truly low-risk is challenging.? In contrast to the often unwelcome approach of watchful waiting, which provides only palliative treatment for symptomatic cancer progression, active surveillance allows men with low-risk cancers to initially avoid treatment and still be able to subsequently undergo attempted curative therapy if there are signs of cancer progression or they change their mind.

Active surveillance is being evaluated in an ongoing randomized trial in the United Kingdom, but data from observational studies and randomized comparisons of surgery with watchful waiting suggest that AS can be a safe and effective strategy.? The NIH convened a panel to evaluate the evidence.? Their final draft report, issued on December 7, is a thoughtful document that generally supports AS with the caveats that more research is needed to identify optimal patient selection criteria, monitoring strategies, and triggers for active treatment while also measuring the benefits and harms of active surveillance that matter most to patients.

This rigorous scrutiny of an innovative treatment strategy is laudable.? Ironically, I?m not aware of any similarly stringent review being conducted ? or expected ? when urologists began performing robot-assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy or radiation oncologists began offering CyberKnife and proton-beam radiotherapy ? expensive technologies which offered uncertain additional benefits and harms compared to standard treatments.? Meanwhile, a conservative strategy designed to minimize the harms of unnecessary treatment receives a cautious endorsement.

If our society is committed to improving patient-centered health outcomes and controlling health care costs, we cannot afford this double standard.? We must address the unbridled dissemination of new technologies.? Such a daunting effort may require regulatory changes for introducing new technologies, reconsidering how care is reimbursed, creating expectations for documenting clinical effectiveness, and providing counter detailing for the public and patients -- who all too often are seduced by the marketing hype that innovation and high-technology equals effective, safe, and necessary care.? The second perspective comes from journalist Laura Newman, who wrote, ?Let?s Not Call it ?Prostate Cancer.? ? Excerpts:

?The Panel said that terminology matters and that men who have PSA screening results that read 10 ngs or less with a Gleason Score of 6 or less should no longer be told that they have ?cancer.? ?The word ?cancer? sets off an emotional response,? said Barry A. Kogan, MD, part of the Consensus Development Panel, and chair of urology, Albany Medical Center, Albany, NY, during the briefing. According to the Panel?s preliminary report, more than 100,000 men fit within the thresholds above, and are candidates for active monitoring.

If active surveillance gained visibility and credibility, it would be a sea change in practice. The Panel declined to say what term should replace ?cancer,? instead leaving it to expert pathologists and urologists? to sort out the science and meaningful language?.

Some doctors are simply too entrenched in treatment for a variety of reasons so that active surveillance is anathema. Further, many physicians claim that they have active surveillance protocols, but the exact thresholds beyond which they would advise treatment and whether they are based in science or opinion are not easy for patients to pinpoint. For example, many doctors may be uncomfortable with cutpoints as high as 10 ng PSA and Gleason Score of 6 less for ?cancer.?

I asked Ashutosh Tewari, MD, Director of the Robotic Cancer Institute, Cornell University Medical Center, N.Y., to clarify his position on active surveillance. He has gone on record at urology meetings as supporting active surveillance and has invited leading researchers who back it to speak with residents. He emailed me back: ?Active surveillance?is the right treatment and we do it here all the time.? Later, he called me to tell me that he has ?hundreds of men on active surveillance.?? Tewari is a leading robotic prostatectomy physician internationally. Robotics is an extremely lucrative field. Many people might wonder whether people invested in robotics could be totally objective. One physician who asked not to be named, remarked: ?There is too much money to be made to really push it [active surveillance].?

Perhaps one day, volume of procedures will not be so inextricably linked to physician income. Health care reform with incentives for value and good outcomes would be a start.? The bold emphasis in each person?s comments was mine, pointing out how a physician and a journalist came to the same topic of expensive technologies and questions of evidence and outcomes.

Tel Aviv University researchers use organic polymer to protect scorched soil from erosion

Wildfires cause tragic losses to life, property, and the environment. But even after the fire rages, the damage is far from done. Without vegetation, bare, burnt soil lies vulnerable to erosion, which can impede efforts towards natural forest regeneration.

Now Assaf Inbar, a graduate student at Tel Aviv University's Porter School of Environmental Studies, together with his supervisors Prof. Marcelo Sternberg of the Department of Molecular Biology and Ecology of Plants, Dr.Meni Ben-Hur of the Volcani Center and Dr. Marcos Lado of the University of La Corua, Spain, have studied a new soil protection procedure that may significantly reduce erosion in areas ravaged by forest fires. Working with an organic polymer originally used in agriculture, Inbar and his supervisors have tested their method in the lab and also in Birya forest in Israel, large parts of which have been burnt by fire.

Protecting the soil from erosion, says Inbar, is vital for the quick restoration of the vegetation. And this method can be cheaper than current solutions, such as creating log barriers or mulching, a process in which the ground is covered with woody chips or straw.

The research was presented at the Israel Society of Ecology & Environmental Sciences Annual Conference in 2010 and at a COSTEuropean Cooperation in Science and Technology Conference in 2009.

Holding on to the soil

Following a wildfire, soil often erodes because vegetation is burnt and the soil remains bare. Deprived of the protection from the elements that vegetation provides, soil can't absorb intense rains, causing run-off. "If water cannot penetrate the soil, it flows on top taking the soil with it," says Inbar. The danger is especially great in forests with steep slopes and shallow soil. Once significant amounts of soil wash away, it is difficult to reforest the area.

The researchers turned to the anionic polymer Polyacrylamide (PAM), widely used in agriculture to prevent soil erosion. They tested the polymer on samples of burnt soils both in the lab, using a rainfall simulator, and out in the field under natural rainfall, using run-off plots in an area of Birya Forest that had been exposed to a moderate wildfire. The run-off plots were placed on a 40-degree slope and outfitted with a funnel at the bottom to collect run-off and sediments, measured after every rainstorm.

In both simulated and natural rainstorms, the burnt soils remained much more stable with the addition of the PAM than without, reports Inbar. With the addition of the polymer, applied in granules of about 110 pounds every 2.5 acres, soil erosion was reduced by 50 percent.

Helping the forest to bloom again

At just under $1.50 dollars per pound, PAM granules can be an affordable alternative to mulching, which sometimes requires application by helicopter, and to log barriers, which requires the effort of many workers and heavy machinery. What's more, the non-toxic PAM is safe for existing vegetation.

The researchers have tested the soil's ability to nurture vegetation with the addition of the polymer, and saw encouraging results. They used wheat as a model for annual plants that sprout during the rainy season in areas that had been affected by fire. The polymer had no negative impact on the growth of the wheat, concludes Inbar, who says the researchers' next step is to test different soils, the interaction between the polymer and ash, and the effectiveness of this treatment in larger areas.

5 things you need to know about Tintin

You've seen the trailers, listened to filmmakers Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson and heard tell that this Tintin character is quite popular in some places.

Like the whole rest of the world.

So who is he, and why should you care? Read on as our resident Tintin nerd gives you the facts you need before heading in to see "The Adventures of Tintin," which opens Tuesday.

REVIEW: How good is Spielberg's Tintin?

1. Tintin is ageless: Created in 1929 by Belgian cartoonist Georges Remi (aka Herge), the original comic strips were black and white and cranked out for a children's newspaper supplement that Remi edited (which may explain the rambling nature of some of the tales). Remi, himself unsure of how old Tintin was supposed to be, gave the character's age as roughly 13 or 14 at the start and a few years older by the end. That must explain how the kid with no family was able to pick up skills like piloting planes and helicopters, racing cars, motorcycles and tanks and performing the duties of an astronaut (along with his dog). Also, for a youngster, he's pretty good with his fists?and a pistol.

2. Tintin needs a visit from child protective services: Only in a comic strip could a boy with no parents, a demanding job and an alcoholic sea captain for a best friend be considered family entertainment. That said, this boy reporter ? who frankly never, ever seems to file a story ? creates a family of his own over the course of his 23 adventures, including a range of pals that include a pair of near-identical policemen, Thompson &Thomson (who are not twins, though?note the differently spelled names); a clumsy, hard-of-hearing scientist and inventor, Professor Calculus; and drunken sailor Captain Haddock, who spews the most colorfully G-rated curses in comics. Plus, Snowy, arguably the best of the always famished, sass-talking comic pet. (Yeah, we said it, Garfield.)

MORE: Top 10 Books of 2011

3. Tintin gets around: From the Soviet Union and Shanghai to chasing a Chicago gangster into the fading American West, this Belgian kid has traveled all over the world ? and beyond (see: "Destination Moon"). And while some of his capers have occurred in purely made-up lands like Borduria, Khemed, Syldavia and Nuevo Rico, the results aren't always to everyone's liking. To wit, his journey to the real-life Congo reportedly features such unpleasant racial stereotypes (not to mention a later-replaced scene in which he blows up a rhino with a stick of dynamite) that it's no longer published.

Video: Watch 'The Adventures of Tintin' trailer (on this page)

4. Tintin is controversial: As mentioned above, Tintin's Congo adventures have been deemed too unpalatable to merit publishing anymore, but some critics further argue that the books teem with broad, bigoted stereotypes of the many races Tintin, Captain Haddock and Snowy encounter in their journeys. As well, Herge continued to publish his works while under German occupation of Brussels during World War II, leading to accusations of being a collaborator and/or Nazi sympathizer. Though he was cleared of the charges eventually, the taint never completely washed away. Supporters, however, point out that while the books do contain some stereotypes, the character of Tintin himself acts consistently as a moral, upright and unbigoted friend to people of all races (if not rhinos), something of a rarity in the days the books were written.

5. Tintin is hugely popular: Not only have the 23 adventures remained in print over the years, but the tales have been adapted before, as an animated TV show, a BBC radio adaptation, a pair of French live-action films and much more. But as cool as the new film looks in its behind-the-scenes motion-capture makings, it's hard to top Herge's simple drawings of a boy, his dog and his often-drunken pal traipsing through the jungles, the snowy mountains and the barren moonscape for adventure at its best.

Senate leaders reach last-minute accord (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Senate leaders agreed on compromise legislation Friday night to extend Social Security payroll tax cuts and jobless benefits for two months while requiring President Barack Obama to accept Republican demands for a swift decision on the fate of an oil pipeline that promises thousands of jobs.

A vote is expected Saturday on the measure, the last in a highly contentious year of divided government.

House passage is also required before the measure can reach Obama's desk.

In a statement, White House communications director Dan Pfeiffer indicated Obama would sign the measure, saying it had met his test of "preventing a tax increase on 160 million hardworking Americans" and avoiding damage to the economy recovery.

The statement made no mention of the pipeline. One senior administration official said the president would almost certainly refuse to grant a permit. The official was not authorized to speak publicly.

Racing to adjourn for the year, lawmakers moved quickly to clear separate spending legislation avoiding a partial government shutdown threatened for midnight.

The developments came a few hours after the White House publicly backed away from Obama's threat to veto any bill that linked the payroll tax cut extension with a Republican demand for a speedy decision on the 1,700-mile Keystone XL oil pipeline proposed from Canada to Texas.

Obama recently announced he was postponing a decision until after the 2012 elections on the much-studied proposal. Environmentalists oppose the project, but several unions support it, and the legislation puts the president in the uncomfortable position of having to choose between customary political allies.

Republican senators leaving a closed-door meeting put the price tag of the two-month package at between $30 billion and $40 billion said the cost would be covered by raising fees on new mortgages backed by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

The legislation would also provide a 60-day reprieve from a scheduled 27 percent cut in the fees paid to doctors who treat Medicare patients.

Several officials said it would require a decision within 60 days on the pipeline, with the president required to authorize construction unless he determined that would not be in the national interest.

Senators in both parties hastened to claim credit for the deal.

Sen. Richard Lugar issued a statement that said the compromise included legislation he authored "that forces President Obama to make a decision" on the pipeline. The Indiana Republican faces a strong primary challenge next year from a tea party-backed rival.

Sen. Max Baucus, D-Mont., chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, said he had "brokered a final deal by bringing lawmakers from both parties together to support jobs."

Not all Democrats were as upbeat. "Look, this was tough. Harry (Reid) had to negotiate with Boehner and with McConnell," said Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., referring to House Speaker John Boehner and Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell, the two Republican leaders in Congress.

Officials said that in private talks, the two sides had hoped to reach agreement on the full one-year extension of payroll tax cuts and jobless benefits that Obama had made the centerpiece of the jobs program he submitted to Congress last fall.

Those efforts failed when the two sides could not agree on enough offsetting cuts to make sure the deficit wouldn't rise.

Reid, in a statement, blamed Republicans, saying they had wanted to "cut Medicare benefits for seniors" and Democrats refused. GOP officials disputed him.

"We'll be back discussing the same issues in a couple of months, but from our point of view, we think the keystone pipeline is a very important job-creating measure in the private sector that doesn't cost the government a penny," said Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the Republican leader.

There was no immediate reaction from House Speaker John Boehner. Neither he nor his aides participated in the negotiations, although McConnell said he was optimistic about the measure's chances for final approval.

Hours earlier, McConnell challenged Obama to give ground.

"Let's not just pass a bill that helps people on the benefits side, let's also include something that actually helps the private sector create the jobs Americans need for the long term," he said.

In a political jab, he added, "Here's an opportunity for the president to say he's not going to let a few radical environmentalists stand in the way of a project that would create thousands of jobs and make America more secure at the same time."

Obama said on Dec. 7 that "any effort to try to tie Keystone to the payroll tax cut I will reject. So everybody should be on notice."

More recently, a veto threat issued Tuesday against the House-passed version of the bill cited the introduction of "ideological issues into what should be a simple debate about cutting taxes for the middle class." Senior administration officials later told reporters that was a reference to the pipeline.

The State Department, in an analysis released this summer, said the project would create up to 6,000 jobs during construction, while developer TransCanada put the total at 20,000 in direct employment.

The 1,700-mile pipeline would carry oil from western Canada to Texas Gulf Coast refineries, passing through Montana, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas and Oklahoma.

The spending bill would lock in cuts that conservative Republicans won from the White House and Democrats earlier in the year.

Republicans also won their fight to block new federal regulations for light bulb energy efficiency, coal dust in mines and clean water permits for construction of timber roads.

The White House turned back GOP attempts to block limits on greenhouse gases, mountaintop removal mining and hazardous emissions from utility plants, industrial boilers and cement kilns.

After a last-minute veto threat, Republicans abandoned attempts to block an administration policy to ease restrictions on visits to Cuba and on the money sent to relatives on the communist island nation from family members living in the United States.

Additionally, the legislation bars military and economic aid to Pakistan until the administration certifies that Islamabad is cooperating on counterterrorism, including taking steps to prevent such militant groups as the Haqqani network from operating in the country.

The provision stems from concerns that the Pakistani government harbors terrorists and from assertions that some government officials knew that Osama bin Laden had established residence deep inside the country. Bin Laden was killed in May by U.S. commandos who raided his fortified compound in Abbottabad.

Hezbollah prisoner held by Iraq faces minor charge (AP)

BAGHDAD ? Iraqi officials say a Lebanese Hezbollah commander allegedly responsible for killing four U.S. soldiers will be prosecuted for illegal entry with a forged passport.

Ali Musa Daqduq was the last American prisoner in Iraq and was handed over to Iraqi authorities on Friday.

On Saturday, two Iraqi officials said Daqduq will be prosecuted for illegal entry with a forged passport ? the only Iraqi charge against him. But the officials say an investigative judge will consider U.S. allegations against him. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter.

Daqduq has been linked to a brazen raid in which four American soldiers were abducted and killed in the Iraqi holy city of Karbala in 2007.

Chosen Path

There was a world that existed in a galaxy that thrived and coexisted with magic. It was called Serenai. It was lush with plants and filled with animals. A large number of majestic and mystical creatures roamed in this blissful utopia. Among the most treasured were the unicorns, they were guardians of every living thing. Everything was peaceful and just, and evil was not known there, until an evil force entered the galaxy and destroyed everything in its path. The world itself also became a victim to this force; therefore, the once peaceful and beautiful planet turned into a dangerous and barren wasteland. The wise and kind wizard, Drackor, who helped protect the land, managed to preserve a little bit of the world's beauty and saved most of the creatures. Unfortunately, he was not able to protect the unicorns, but the unicorns' fate was not all lost.

The rulers of the unicorns managed to save their only daughter's soul. Her name was Pristine. When the king and queen learned of their beloved daughter's death, they decided to use the legendary Crystal of Life in order to preserve Pristine's soul. However, in doing so their lives would be lost forever. Ignoring the risk, they used all their power to make sure that Pristine's soul was sent to the future where she would be reborn. They succeeded at the price of their own lives. But something else happened. During the process, Pristine's soul separated into two parts. One was her unicorn soul, and the other was her human soul. When both of Pristine's souls were reborn, it had been ten years since what came to be known as the Invasion. The human Pristine, having no memory of her identity or her past life, was born to a poor yet loving family. Evil had spread throughout the galaxy like a disease, but there was still good in different places.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
And so this story began in the year 1100, eighteen years after Pristine's reincarnation. Unlike her days as a unicorn when she was a care-free, spirited, and graceful young woman, Pristine was now melancholy, quiet, and withdrawn. She knew that she was different and felt that something was missing from her life. She only had one friend, a little girl named Kyra. The eight year-old was the complete opposite of Pristine. Where Pristine was shy, Kyra was outgoing. Pristine's figure was willowy and seemed fragile. Kyra's figure was slender and athletic. Pristine trusted her instincts whereas Kyra trusted her mind. Pristine was pale completed and her platinum blonde hair was nearly white. The only color on her face was her piercing, celestial blue eyes. Kyra held more color to her face with her peachy skin and pink cheeks. Her hair was dirty blonde and her eyes were hazel. Despite their differences, they both went together like two peas in a pod. They also knew of the evils around them, but never imagined how drastically it would turn their lives up-side down.
The day started out as any regular day. Chores had to be done, kids were playing, and everything else went on as usual. Pristine was outside near a stream washing her clothing. The clothes everyone wore very worn and old. The village depended on crops people grew, but even the crops weren't many because of the poor soil quality. Some of the people left the village to the closest town for work, which was a mining town. As Pristine did her chores, she heard laugher and sighed. The laughter was coming from a group of teenage boys who took pleasure out of teasing her. She was silently grateful that most of them would be leaving soon.
Most teens when they turn sixteen made the decision to stay or leave. Pristine had decided to stay. Had she been a normal teenage girl, she would have been married by now but there never been anyone who touched her heart that way and she felt she shouldn't try to love someone when she held no love for herself. Besides, most guys who saw her thought her to be too sickly because of her pale appearance. Pristine was glad her awkward teenage years were over though. After washing the clothes, Pristine place the wet clothes in a basket before taking it to a clothes line to be dried. As she was about to grab a shirt, she was grabbed by the wrist and hauled up. She turned to see the leader of that group of teenage boys, Hunter. Even though he was sixteen, he towered over her at five feet and ten inches and was muscular. Pristine feared him the most because she always felt he had anger issues.
"Hey Whitie, are you going to miss me when I am gone?" Hunter said as his menacing brown eyes glowed.
Pristine remained silent and averted eye contact. Whitie was the 'nickname' the boys called her.
"Look at me when I am talking to you!" Hunter shouted, using his other hand to force her face towards him.
Pristine still glanced the other way.
"Looks like she being stubborn again boss." laughed another voice.
"You're right Saul. You know I think it's about time we go somewhere and teach her some obedience." Hunter agreed.
Pristine shivered in fear. She wished her parents and the other adults would come back but they were out in the field gathering crops. Her mind was diverted when she was suddenly let go. She saw Hunter and doubled over as well as some of his friends.
"Take that!" a voice shouted as a young girl kicked another guy in his vulnerable area.
It turned out to be Kyra. She had come outside from cleaning her house to hear Hunter. She reacted without thinking and after she was done, she grabbed Pristine's hand and pulled her towards a nearby wooded area. Pristine was too surprised to say anything. They ran for a bit before stopping to catch their breath.
"Are you okay Pristine?" Kyra asked.
Pristine nodded.
"Sorry Kyra." she replied as she breathed out.
"It's not your fault they're creeps. I'll be happy when Hunter leaves."
"Me too. Kyra, I don't want to go back yet. I know I need to finish my chores, but . . ."
"It's okay Pristine. We'll walk for a bit."
As the girls walked they looked at their surroundings. They hardly ever saw anything green or alive. It seemed that evil sucked up all that was living. Even during spring and summer hardly anything bloomed. Winter would be approaching soon. Pristine and Kyra knew such places of life existed on Serenai. Every now and then a merchant would stop by and let the children and anyone else look at the books he brought and sometimes talked about the places he been to. Time slipped by and before either of the girls knew it, nearly an hour passed. As the two walked along, Pristine stopped and felt something was wrong. Kyra noticed Pristine's hesitation and looked to see fear in her eyes.
"What's wrong Pristine?" Kyra asked.
"Oh, I just had this terrible instinct that something is going to happen. Let's go back."
When they reached the village, everything laid in ruins. No one was in sight.
"Oh no! Tell me this is only a dream!" Kyra gasped as she trembled in horror.
Next to her, Pristine dropped to her knees. Evil permeated from everywhere and Pristine found herself short of breath. Seeing her friend's reaction, Kyra knelt down next to her hugged her.
"Who would do such a thing?" Pristine gasped suddenly, feeling numb all over.
While she felt so many emotions within her, she couldn't bring herself to cry. It was like a part of her was missing something. She was very frustrated that she could never express her feelings. It was often why many people misunderstood her. Even her parents, who were wonderful, couldn't quite understand why she never expressed herself. Because of this, Pristine never felt connected to this place; maybe that's why she could not grieve now. Pristine was still lost in thought when a large number of soldiers surrounded them. They looked like living nightmares in black armor. They also smelled of dead and rot.
"Who are these guys?" shrieked Kyra as she and Pristine huddled closer together.
"The men who obviously destroyed our village."
"Somebody help us! Please!"
All of the sudden, a bright light appeared, and just like that, all of the villains vanished! Pristine and Kyra covered their eyes when the light appeared. They opened them and the first thing they saw was an old man standing by a burned down hut. He had long white hair and beard. His different colored eyes were green and blue. Both Pristine and Kyra imagined he was a wizard because of the style of dress he wore and the staff he held. Both girls gazed in amazement. His garments were crimson red and had gold trimmings, he also carried a dagger at his side. Pristine was the first to recover from her shock.
"Excuse me sir, but who are you?" she finally asked.
The elderly man walked forward and smiled before saying, "Greetings, young ones. I am Drackor."
"The legendary Drackor? One of the most powerful wizards! The one who was able to place three protective barriers on our world?!" asked Kyra.
Who had not heard of Drackor? He was considered a legend in Serenai. It was said he was there when the world was created. He was the great teacher and confidant to the unicorns. Whenever there was a wedding or important event, Drackor was always there. But since the Invasion, not many saw him for the evil forces always searched for him. Drackor laughed after Kyra's response.
"Indeed I am he." he replied.
"Drackor? Do you know what happened to our parents and the other villagers?" asked Kyra.
"Don't worry Kyra and Pristine. I took them to safety."
The girls sighed before Kyra said, "Wait a minute! How do you know our names?"
"I have been watching this place and many others over the years. I know everything that goes around here and everywhere else."
That was partly true. He also made a vow to always watch over Pristine and he meant to keep it. As he kept glancing at Pristine, he saw a totally different Pristine from the one he once knew. He had seen she lived a hard life. He wished he could have helped her, but he knew he couldn't for he simply wasn't allowed to by the gods that governed this galaxy. He had been tempted to ask, but once an order was given he had to obey it. He was very relieved he could help her now.
"Excuse me, Drackor, but what do we do now?" asked Kyra, jilting Drackor out of his thoughts.
"Oh, I am sorry. I have an assignment for you two. I want you to find the lost unicorn princess."
"But weren't all the unicorns killed during the Invasion?"
"Don't you remember Kyra? The last time the merchant came through he said that not all the unicorns died. Somehow, the princess of the unicorns survived thanks to her parents. He said that her soul was preserved and she was born in this time." pointed out Pristine.
This was the first time she spoken since the conversation began. She had been a little intimidated by the wise sage. She felt power radiating from him. But she sensed his goodness and felt that she could trust him. Pristine had a way of knowing who to trust and who not to.
She turned to Drackor and asked, "Drackor, why do you want us to find the lost princess?"
"Because it is your destiny to find her."
"Well . . ."
"We'll do it!" interrupted Kyra.
Pristine looked at Kyra and saw the eagerness in her eyes. Kyra had always wanted to go on an adventure and this certainly would be one. Pristine took a deep breath. Deep down inside, she knew that she must do this.
"All right." Pristine nodded.
"Uh, Drackor? How do we begin?" asked Kyra.
"First, you two must go to the Kingdom of Grom."
"But, but, Drackor, Grom is many weeks away from here. It's impossible to reach it. We have to cross an ocean."
"Kyra is right sir. It would be considered treacherous to travel right now with winter almost here." Pristine added.
"Nothing is impossible!" shouted Drackor as he raised his staff.
There was a crack of thunder and the three of them vanished in a cloud of smoke.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The next thing they knew, they were someplace else. They stood on a hillside overlooking a valley. Patches of green mixed with dull brown to signify the changing of seasons. In the distance, Pristine and Kyra saw a castle surrounded by houses.

"Wow! Where are we?" gasped Kyra.

"We are in the Kingdom of Grom." replied Drackor.

"It is beautiful." said Pristine.

"Where do we go from here?" asked Kyra.

"Follow this road we are on," indicated Drackor, "Then head for Grom Castle. The king there is good and will help you get started on your journey."

"Drackor, how do we get into the palace? Surely there will be guards there."

"When you reach the gate, just tell the guards there that I sent you to see the king."

"But sir, surely you know that the guards are not going to believe that a couple of commoners were sent by a wizard. They're going to want proof." pointed out Pristine.

"Hmm, you do have a point there."

He made a red sash appear in his hand.

"Here, take my sash as proof."

"Thank-you." replied Pristine as she took it.

"The sash also holds my emblem on it. Now, all you two need is . . ." said Drackor before waving his hand.

There on the road appeared two horses. One was white, and the other was golden brown.

"Oh! They're beautiful!" Kyra replied, amazed.

"Thank you for everything Drackor." thanked Pristine as she got on the white horse.

Both of them knew how to ride horses because their village used to be known for their horse farms, but since the Invasion, things went into decline.

"My pleasure, Pristine."

"Man, it's been a while since I rode a horse." commented Kyra.

Unfortunately, when she got on the horse, she was facing the back! It was pretty obvious that she hadn't been on a horse in some time.

Pristine giggled and said, "Oh, Kyra! When you get on a horse, you're supposed to put your right leg on the right side of the horse, not the left."

Realizing what she did wrong, Kyra quickly dismounted and got on correctly.

"Sorry about that." she apologized.

"Are you two ready?" Drackor asked.

"Ready as we'll ever be." said Pristine.

"Then go and good luck to the both of you."

As the two friends rode off, Drackor quietly said to himself, "May the spirits of this world protect you on your quest . . . Princess."

Democrats abandoning millionaire surtax proposal (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Democrats are abandoning their demand for a surtax on millionaires to help finance payroll tax cuts in a sign that lawmakers are trying to broker a compromise on Congress' highest-profile year-end dispute.

Even so, there is no clear path to quick bipartisan agreement on the legislation, which would prevent an automatic Social Security tax increase on 160 million workers and the expiration of jobless benefits for people out of work the longest. Both would occur Jan. 1 without congressional action.

Lawmakers are also embroiled in a squabble over a huge, separate spending bill, a dispute that would force a shutdown of most of the government on Saturday unless it is resolved. Neither party wants to risk the wrath of voters by shuttering government doors.

Republicans say they plan to try winning House approval for a $1 trillion measure financing dozens of agencies through next September.

But that means a conflict with the White House, whose communications director, Dan Pfeiffer, said President Barack Obama had problems with some social, environmental and other provisions in the legislation. Pfeiffer said Congress should approve a short-term bill to keep the government open while final disputes are resolved.

House Republicans officially unveiled the massive, bipartisan spending bill late Wednesday to fulfill transparency rules, but Senate Democrats had yet to officially sign on. However, the measure wasn't expected to change much, if at all, before a vote Friday, despite White House protests and an explicit veto threat regarding provisions placing limits on the ability of Cuban immigrants to visit families on the island or send money back to them.

The pre-Christmas wrangling caps a contentious year in a capital hindered by divided government, with Democrats controlling the White House and Senate while Republicans run the House. Lawmakers have engaged in down-to-the-wire drama even when performing the most mundane acts of governing, such as keeping agencies functioning and extending federal borrowing authority, tasks that are only becoming more politically delicate as the calendar nears the 2012 election year.

That finger-pointing was reflected Wednesday in some of the back and forth between party leaders.

"My friend is living in a world of non-reality," Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., who had suggested that Congress quickly complete its spending work. Reid said unresolved disputes made that impossible.

"The House has done its work. It's time for the Senate to do theirs," said House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, referring to House approval this week of payroll tax legislation.

That bill drew solid opposition from Democrats and Obama in part because it would force work on the Keystone XL oil pipeline from western Canada to Texas Gulf Coast refineries, which Obama would rather delay. They are also unhappy that the bill is financed by cuts to civilian federal workers, Obama's health care overhaul bill and other programs that Democrats say would avoid meaningful contributions from the rich.

Senate aides said top Democrats are writing a new version of the payroll tax legislation that would exclude a 1.9 percent surtax on people earning more than $1 million a year, a levy Democrats relied on to pay for their previous payroll tax cut bills. Instead, they said, their new legislation's savings would include higher fees that government-run Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac would charge to back mortgages and revenue from selling portions of the broadcast spectrum.

Republicans minimized the importance of the Democratic retreat on taxing high-income people.

"I don't think it's much of a concession," said Boehner spokesman Michael Steel. "It never had any chance of passing the Senate, let alone the House."

In one instance of cooperation, the Senate was expected to give final congressional approval Thursday to a $662 billion defense bill that would allow the administration to prosecute terrorism suspects in the civilian justice system.

The White House had initially issued a veto threat against the bill over language requiring the military to handle some terrorism suspects. An agreement was reached by including a provision ensuring that the role of domestic law enforcement agencies would be unchanged.

The bill, which the House approved Wednesday by 283-136, lays the groundwork for weapons purchases, U.S. military activity overseas and the Energy Department's national security programs. Reflecting a period of tight budgets and diminishing U.S. involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan, the legislation envisions $27 billion less spending than Obama proposed ? money that will be supplied in separate legislation.

Also Wednesday, the Senate rejected rival Republican and Democratic proposals to amend the Constitution to require a balanced federal budget.

On the dispute over the giant spending bill, GOP aides have said that as a backup plan, they might push a short-term bill through the House financing agencies into January if they can't win enough support for the $1 trillion package.

Passage of the spending bill, by removing the threat of a federal shutdown, would take pressure off House Republicans to continue bargaining on the separate payroll tax legislation.

However, spotlighting the degree of disagreement between the two parties, they are even at odds over whether the $1 trillion measure is a bipartisan compromise or not.

Republicans and at least one Democrat said agreement had been reached earlier in the week. But the White House and Reid said disagreements remain, with Reid citing provisions relating to travel to Cuba and funding for the Commodities Future Trading Commission.

The spending bill would finance the Pentagon and nine other Cabinet-level departments, as well as scores of smaller agencies. It would trim the budgets of the Environmental Protection Agency, foreign aid and Congress itself while providing funds to combat AIDS in Africa, patrol the U.S.-Mexico border, operate national parks and boost veterans' health care.

China investigates SKorean embassy's broken window (AP)

BEIJING ? China said Wednesday it is increasing security around South Korea's embassy in Beijing after it had a window broken, amid tensions over allegations in South Korea that a Chinese fisherman fatally stabbed a coast guard officer.

South Korea's news agency Yonhap cited an anonymous official as saying it was unclear if the incident was related to this week's stabbing death in South Korean waters. Some Chinese have accused South Korea of bullying their country's fishermen.

The Yonhap report said the embassy was hit by a metal ball believed fired from an air gun Tuesday afternoon. No one was hurt.

An embassy press officer surnamed Zheng said it was unclear what caused the hole in the window.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Weimin said Wednesday that authorities "take this incident seriously and are sparing no time in investigating it," but that initial inspections showed the embassy was not attacked. China is increasing the numbers of police officers and enhancing security patrols around the embassy, Liu said.

South Korea's Foreign Ministry said it formally asked China on Wednesday to beef up security around their Beijing embassy to prevent further incidents. Such a request is not very unusual between countries, the ministry said.

Tensions have risen since South Korean officials said Monday that the Chinese captain of a boat suspected of illegally fishing in South Korean waters killed one coast guard officer and wounded another.

On Tuesday in Seoul, protesters at the Chinese Embassy defaced a Chinese flag and a newspaper called the Chinese fishermen "pirates."

A commentary published in China's Global Times on Wednesday accused South Korean's media of misleading the public and said the fishermen were not "an arrogant group of bandits."

The Foreign Ministry's Liu said Wednesday that bilateral relations between the countries would not be affected.

Man asks cop: 'Can I have my weed back?'

By The Associated Press

BEAVER, Pa. -- A defense attorney's argument that a bag of marijuana uncovered during a Pennsylvania traffic stop could have belonged to a man other than his client unraveled after an arresting officer recalled the suspect asking him: "Can I have my weed back?"

Nineteen-year-old Devonte Davon Jeter was one of four men in a car stopped by Midland police on May 13.

Jeter's attorney said Monday that the marijuana could have belonged to any one of the men in the car.

But the prosecutor told the judge: "I don't know what else 'Can I have my weed back?' can mean, other than it's his."

The Beaver County Times reports that a district judge agreed with the prosecutor and ordered Jeter to stand trial on marijuana possession charges.
