(Reuters) - Michigan's Republican-led legislature is considering a push for a "right-to-work" law that would make paying union dues optional in a state that has one of the highest union membership rates in the United States and is home to the United Auto Workers.
Republican Governor Rick Snyder, who had said in the past that a "right-to-work" law was not appropriate for Michigan, said on Tuesday the issue was now under discussion, though he did not say if or when a proposal would be introduced.
"We want to have a thoughtful discussion so there will be ongoing dialogues, say, tomorrow and the next day and we will make a conclusion when appropriate," Snyder told reporters after meeting on Tuesday with Republican state House and Senate leaders.
No action was taken on a proposal on Wednesday.
Michigan would be the second state in the nation's industrial heartland to adopt such a law after Indiana this year became the 23rd state with such laws.
"Right-to-work" laws typically allow workers to opt out of paying union dues, forbidding requirements that a person must join a union to work in a certain shop.
Supporters say the laws help attract or retain businesses, while opponents say they suppress wages and benefits for workers, and undermine the financial stability of unions.
Republicans control Michigan's legislature and governor's office. Voters in November rejected a measure to enshrine a right to collective bargaining in the state constitution, leading to renewed calls to take up the right-to-work issue.
The Michigan Chamber of Commerce on Monday backed passage of right-to-work legislation, citing in part a survey that found 85 percent support among its members.
When asked whether he thought right-to-work laws were right for the state now, Snyder said on Tuesday, "I am not going to make a conclusion on that. We are having thoughtful discussions."
Michigan House Speaker Jase Bolger and other Republican leaders have sought to generate support to pass a right-to-work law during the December lame-duck legislative session.
"Discussions about Freedom to Work legislation are continuing and there is no final agreement or decision on whether to move forward or what that would look like if we do," Ari Adler, Bolger's spokesman, said in a statement on Wednesday.
The Metropolitan Affairs Coalition, which includes both business and labor interests, last week urged Michigan not to pursue right-to-work laws.
"We continue to be hopeful that RTW be for discussion ... not legislation," coalition president Paul Tait said in a statement on Wednesday. "This is clearly divisive and counterproductive."
Tait said Michigan's economy is turning around, in part, because of good labor-management relations.
"Anything, including RTW, that would derail that progress makes no sense," Tait said.
About 17.5 percent of Michigan workers were members of unions last year, placing it fifth among states, compared with 11.8 percent of workers nationally, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The potential action in Michigan follows efforts that greatly curbed the bargaining powers of public sector unions in Wisconsin in 2011. Ohio residents turned back efforts to curb public sector union powers in 2011 through a referendum vote.

As a child the holiday season was a magical time in our house. My mom would decorate, my dad would make egg nog and us kids would eat my moms home made fudge as we watched her sort and organize the holiday decor. I would eagerly await the moments my mom would sort the ornaments. I LOVED each and everyone of them. My sister and I would play with the doll ornaments, have the animal candle decor be our pets and even the nut cracker was included in our play time. My mom was sweet to let us gently play with the ornaments while she organized everything for the day we would decorate the tree. I have the sweetest memories of holiday decor organizing.?
Now with my own son we keep the same tradition for the day before the tree arrives. I get out all the decor to sort and organize based on the theme we will have for the holidays. I love looking at each ornament and recall where I got it or who gave it to me. Each of them represent a loved one or cherished memory. To me a Christmas tree is a loving representation of the years lived. Funny ones, cute ones, religious ones and holiday themed ones all decorate my tree. We also get out and clean the other decor like our mini singing tree, the nut cracker, lights and so much more.
This holiday season we are in a new home. I am so excited for a Christmas in the new place and to decorate this year. We are having our annual sort, organize and theme selection day. I brought out the bins of holiday decor and poured a cup of coffee to enjoy while I reminisce over each item.
Each year I look forward to the Starbucks Holiday Blend as a part of our tradition as well. I have been drinking it each year since I moved out of my parents home. My mom started sending the big bag of coffee for me as a Christmas present. The last few year I have been buying it earlier so I can enjoy the whole holiday season.
A sweet treat to go along with holiday decor organizing is a must have item. Some years is cookies or muffins or a chocolate treat. This year we decided to buy cinnamon rolls to compliment the flavors of the Starbucks Holiday blend. I shopped at Sam's Club for my items. I was looking for a display for the Starbucks Holiday blend so I did not have to look all over for one of my favorite Holiday indulgence but did not see it. I went down the coffee aisle and found the Holiday blend next to the other Starbucks roasts. We enjoy the bakery selection Artisan Fresh items that we find there. I did not see the cinnamon rolls up front or on display, they had apple turnovers on a display but not cinnamon rolls. I did see them in the Bakery section near the breads. I even spotted pumpkin muffins and mini cinnamon rolls.
?I love the scent of the coffee! I do not normally drink black coffee but with the Holiday Blend I love the flavors of the roast and want to enjoy them. The complimentary notes for the Starbucks? Holiday Blend are ginger, pumpkin, cinnamon, nutmeg, orange and cloves. The flavor was amazing when I would take a sip of the coffee then a bite of the cinnamon roll then more coffee. The sweetness of the cinnamon roll complimented the bold notes of the coffee. Its a delicious pair for the holidays! #DeliciousPairings
I brew Starbucks at home all year long and I am never disappointed in the flavor. Its just like at a coffee house except I get to be at home nice and warm not out fighting traffic or looking for parking in the bustle of Holiday shopping. If you are looking to add a delicious drink and treat to your holiday traditions Starbucks Holiday Blend and Sam's Club Artisan Fresh Cinnamon Rolls are perfect for cold holiday nights spending time with your family. Even my husband loved it and he can be picky about his holiday treats! He commented on how he could taste the cinnamon in the coffee more after taking a bite of the cinnamon roll first. He asked if I made the cinnamon rolls since they tasted so great, for a moment or two I let him think I did but then told him they were from the Sam's Club bakery.
With the ornaments and decor cleaned and organized we are ready to buy our tree this week. We were inspired by the bag of Starbucks Holiday Blend and have decided to go with gold, green and white as our holiday theme colors. I look forward to the Christmas tree going up, I will be enjoying a cup of coffee and cinnamon rolls as I sit back and marvel in the beauty of it.

Like a burr, cancer cells wave receptors designed to trap things they need ? researchers hope that blocking the androgen receptors of AR+ breast cancer cells will stop the signals of growth. Image: Flickr/gomagoti KEY POINTS:
|
Breast cancers are defined by their drivers ? estrogen and progesterone receptors (ER and PR) and HER2 are the most common, and there are drugs targeting each. When breast cancer has an unknown driver, it also has fewer treatment options ? ?this aggressive form of breast cancer without ER, PR or HER2, which was thought? not to be driven by hormones, is known as triple negative. A decade ago, work at the University of Colorado Cancer Center added another potential driver to the list ? the androgen receptor ? and this week marks a major milestone in a clinical trial targeting this cause of breast cancer growth.
In fact, 75 percent of all breast cancers and about 20 percent of triple negative cancers are positive for the androgen receptor. Blocking the androgen receptor may stop the growth of some triple negative breast cancers ? these aggressive cancers for which chemotherapy, radiation, surgery and hope have long been the only treatments.
?This work is a concise example of modern cancer science in action. We noticed something in the clinic, worked on it in the lab, and now are happy to report the lab work is once again back in the clinic where it has the very real potential to benefit patients,? says Anthony Elias, MD, breast cancer program director at CU Cancer Center.
The work started in 2001 when Elias took the clinical observation of estrogen-positive breast cancers that responded poorly or only very temporarily to estrogen-blocking treatments, to colleague Jennifer Richer, PhD, co-director of the CU Cancer Center Tissue Processing and Procurement Core. In these cases, something else was driving the cancer. What was the pathway? Richer showed that it was the androgen receptor.
Androgens including testosterone have long been implicated as a driver of prostate cancer and so drugs targeting both the body?s production of androgens and cancer cells? ability to use the hormone were already in the development pipeline. Richer started with cell culture and animal model work on a then-experimental drug by the company Medivation known as MDV-3100.
?Normally, the way these hormones work is by attaching to receptors in the cell cytoplasm, at which point the receptor draws itself and the hormone molecule inside the nucleus where it regulates genes,? Richer says. The genes regulated by these hormones tell breast cancer cells to survive and reproduce beyond control. The drug MDV-3100, now known as Enzalutamide, which recently gained FDA approval for use with prostate cancer, makes androgen receptors unable to go into a cell?s nucleus ? and so the message of growth never gets delivered.
?Interestingly, it seems that estrogen-positive breast cancers are susceptible to the same drug,? Richer says, explaining that something about the way the signal of estrogen is transmitted inside a cell?s nucleus requires the (counterintuitive) presence of androgen receptors in the nucleus, too.
And so Enzalutamide has many potential uses in the treatment of breast cancer: as a first-line drug against androgen receptor-positive cancers with or without additional hormonal drivers, as a second-line drug against tumors that have mutated away from estrogen- or HER2-dependence by adopting androgen-dependence, in combination with drugs that target these other hormones to disallow cancer from mutating toward androgen-dependence in the first place, or perhaps in addition to or instead of existing treatments for estrogen-positive breast cancers ? which seem susceptible to this anti-androgen therapy.
This week, after seeing, ?no additional toxicities,? Elias expects an ongoing Phase I clinical trial of Enzalutamide for triple-negative breast cancers to flip to a Phase II trial ? from proving safety to demonstrating results. In addition to the CU Cancer Center, the trial is being offered at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and the Karmanos Cancer Institute. Richer and Elias will present additional findings from their work with androgen-positive breast cancer at the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium in December and will hear about a major invited grant proposal to the U.S. Department of Defense the same month.
?It?s an exciting time for breast cancer research,? Elias says. ?We should know soon if we have a viable new target in breast cancer treatment.?
Along with validating a new target, Richer and Elias may soon provide a powerful new treatment for breast cancers that evade current therapies.

The French R?sistance has had a great influence on literature, particularly in FranceA famous example is the poem ?Strophes pour se souvenir?, which was written by the communist academic Louis Aragon in 1955 to commemorate the heroism of the Manouchian Group, whose 23 members were shot by the NazisThe R?sistance is also portrayed in Jean Renoir?s wartime This Land is Mine (1943), which was produced in the USAIn the immediate post-war years, French cinema produced a number of films that portrayed a France broadly present in the R?sistance.[188][189] The 1946 La Bataille du rail depicted the courageous efforts of French railway workers to sabotage German reinforcement trains,[190] and in the same year Le P?re tranquille told the story of a quiet insurance agent secretly involved in the bombing of a factory.[190] Collaborators were hatefully presented as a rare minority, as played by Pierre Brewer in J?richo (1946) or Serge Reggiani in Les Portes de la nuit (1946), and movements such as the Milice were rarely evokedIn the 1950s, a less heroic interpretation of the R?sistance to the occupation gradually began to emerge.[190] In Claude Autant-Lara?s La Travers?e de Paris (1956), the portrayal of the city?s black market and general mediocrity revealed the reality of war-profiteering during the occupation.[191] In the same year, Robert Bresson presented A Man Escaped, in which an imprisoned R?sistance activist works with a reformed collaborator inmate to escape.[192] A ?

ScienceDaily (Dec. 3, 2012) ? The ability of male chimpanzees to form coalitions with one another in order to direct aggression at other male chimpanzees has certain benefits. A new study by Ian Gilby at Duke University in North Carolina and his colleagues has further revealed that it may not just be the coalition that is important, but who the coalition is with that determines future success.
Their study finds that male chimpanzees with central positions in the coalitionary network were most likely to father offspring and increase in rank. Specifically, those who formed coalitions with males who did not form coalitions with each other were the most successful. Their work is published in the Springer journal Behavioral Ecology and Sociobiology.
Coalitionary aggression is when at least two individuals jointly direct aggression at one or more targets. Aggression and coalition formation between males is important for attaining a higher dominance in many animal species. The most dominant males are more likely to mate and therefore, sire offspring. Males with high coalition rates are more likely to mate more often than expected for their rank.
Gilby and his colleagues studied data from wild chimpanzees gathered over 14 years from the Kasekela community in Gombe National Park in Tanzania. They wanted to test the hypothesis that male coalitionary aggression leads to positive benefits via increased dominance rank and improved reproductive success. Of the four measures they used to characterize a male's coalitionary behavior, the only one that was related to both of these factors was 'betweenness' -- a measure of social network centrality -- which reflects the tendency to make coalitions with other males who did not form coalitions with each other. The only non-alpha males to sire offspring were males that had the highest 'betweenness' scores. These males were also more likely to increase in rank, which is associated with higher reproductive success.
The researchers postulate that this shows that male chimpanzees may recognize the value of making the 'right' social connections. By choosing their coalition partners carefully, they are demonstrating an ability to recognize the relationships of others.
The authors conclude that "?our data suggest that there are consequences to the recognition of third party relationships. As such, it represents an important step toward a more complete understanding of the adaptive value of social intelligence and the evolution of co-operation." They add that further observation is required to fully explain the study's findings.

Have a family member who also loves their iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch? If so, you won't find a better gift for them than a few apps to make that experience better.?
Here are some of our favorite (and your favorite) paid apps for holiday giving.?
MEDIA
Downcast
If you have a podcast lover on your gift list, you won't find a better app than Downcast. It puts every other podcast manager to shame with automated downloading, excellent data management, and the ability to add and sync new podcasts on the fly.
It has a ton of other great features as well. Simply put, Downcast blows Apple's solution out of the water and is easily the best gift you could give to a podcast fanatic.
Panamp
For the music lover on your list, a new music player might be the perfect fit. While the default player is just fine for most people, music addicts might prefer something with a bit more function or flash. If your gift recipient wants some more features, specifically the ability to create solid playlists from anywhere, Panamp is one of the best choices out there.?
It does everything the regular music app does, but it does it better. For people looking for a whole new way to browse their music, both Track 8 and in:play are worth a look for their drastically different design and user experience. Either way, a new way to listen to music is always fun, and all three of these choices are solid.
Plex
Have a media lover on your list? Than one of the best apps you can give them is one that gives them access to their entire library no matter where they are. Plex is fantastic at this. With Plex running on their home computer they'll be able to stream music, photos, and videos directly to their iPhone through a Wi-Fi connection or cellular network. If Plex doesn't sound like it'll suit their needs, then StreamToMe is a similar option that might work better. Both are great apps that'll make their media-filled lives a little more joyful.
PHOTO AND VIDEO
Camera+
We adore Camera+ because it's hands down the most useful, incredible camera for the iPhone. Even if someone on your list is just an amateur photographer who occasionally snaps a picture of the family dinner, Camera+ will help make those pictures look better. It offers ways to improve bad pictures, reduce camera shake, add filters, and the all-important camera timer for those holiday pictures with all the family.
iMovie
If you have a budding film director on your gift list, iMovie is a great choice for editing on the go. Sure, it's not as sophisticated as a desktop editor, but iMovie is perfect for those who just want to trim up their home movies so they're presentable.?
The best part is that it's simple enough to use that anyone can pick it up and start editing video right away. If you're sick of getting videos from someone that are chopped up or too long, iMovie might just be the perfect gift.
PRODUCTIVITY AND UTILITIES
OmniFocus
For the person on your list who loves to organize and create to-do lists, you'll need to pick out a good organization app. You have?a ton of different choices. If you want to pick up something that does absolutely everything,?
OmniFocus is a favorite amongst the organization obsessed. If you're looking for something simpler, Checkmark is?an amazing location-based reminder app, Clear keeps?things simple and elegant, and Toodledo fits somewhere in the middle of all those.
It really depends on what type of person you're shopping for, but rest assured you'll be able to find something perfect for them in the App Store.
iWork
iWork is a collection of some of the best software Apple has for iOS. Each of the programs are nearly just as powerful as their desktop counterparts, and they're incredibly easy to use. Pages is a simple way to write and edit documents on the go, while Numbers makes it so you can work on spreadsheets no matter where you are. The real standout is Keynote, which not only allows you to easily create presentations, but also show them off without having to lug around a laptop.
Sparrow
For the Gmail lover on your list, you're not going to find a better email manager than Sparrow. It not only allows you to do simple Gmail functions like add labels and tags, but it's also slick and easy to use. The best thing about Sparrow is that it feels like you're actually in Gmail, but you don't have to work with Google's lackluster Gmail app. If you have someone on your list who desperately needs a better email app, Sparrow is a perfect fit.
Screens
Have someone on your list who loves to control their desktop remotely? Then Screens?is the best iOS remote desktop app out there. What makes Screens stand out is the fact it's incredibly easy to use, but still powerful enough that it does everything you'd expect from a remote desktop app. It's the perfect app for anyone you know who's constantly complaining about not having access to their home computer when they're on the go.
Sleep Cycle
If?you have someone on your list who has been struggling to get enough sleep (or has been getting too much), Sleep Cycle is a great app that can track their sleep habits and help them figure out what's going on. It won't magically get them a good night's rest, but it can help figure out what's wrong. It'll also wake them up during an optimal sleep state, which is a handy feature for anyone you know who seems a little groggy in the morning.
Launch Center Pro
Launch Center Pro is the closest thing iPhone users can get to a customized launch center. It's perfect for anyone on your list who always complains about it taking too long to launch or find apps. At its core, Launch Center Pro offers up a ton of shortcuts to directly launch apps and specific actions within many of them (for instance, you can launch directly into the Instagram camera, or call your Mom directly). It's a great app for anyone who loves shortcuts and making things a bit simpler.
Drafts
For the constant note taker on your list, you have about a billion different options to choose from in the App Store. That said, we love the versatility and usability of Drafts. Drafts also makes a perfect gift because it can send out notes to pretty much every cloud and notes service you can think of, including Dropbox, Evernote, Simplenote, and elsewhere. Another fantastic option is Notesy, which syncs with Dropbox, and also supports TextExpander and Markdown to make typing on an iPhone easier.
A special thanks goes out to everyone who provided suggestions! It made putting together these guides a lot easier, and a better fit for you.

TIP! Each insurance company follows its own set of procedures. Because insurance companies offer a broad array of policy prices, always solicit additional quotes if you do not like the first few you receive.
Auto insurance is vital for all drivers. There are many insurance companies out there. Therefore, trying to find the best one for you can be quite overwhelming. In this article, you can find some guidance to pick the right plan for you.
TIP! Carpooling or taking public transit can save you money on your auto insurance. Insurers love when their clients are responsible and they can reward them by lowering their mileage.
Geographical location can have either a negative or positive affect on your insurance premiums. Insurance rates differ depending on whether you live in a rural and suburban area as opposed to a city. Usually a rural and suburban area will have reduced rates due to a lower incidents of crime and accidents.
TIP! Be sure to do thorough research when your insurance company tries to get you to purchase a warranty to cover parts that will be used to fix your car. Many repair shops will guarantee their work, and auto parts makers will repair any parts they make.
You should understand the different coverage types available and whether or not your insurance policy covers all possible situations. You are going to need liability insurance if someone gets injured or there is property damage in an accident where you are at fault so that you don?t have to pay damages out-of-pocket. You will also want to consider the need to insure against damages caused by uninsured drivers. Collision insurance and comprehensive insurance are the options that will provide coverage for damages to your own vehicle.
TIP! Practicing good driving habits can positively impact your car insurance premiums. Most insurance companies offer discounts and rewards to drivers who consistently avoid traffic tickets and accidents.
Make sure you keep good records of your paid insurance bills. If you haven?t received your new insurance card, keep a copy of your bill and cancelled check in your car until your new insurance card arrives.
TIP! You need to understand the ins and outs of your policy and make sure that you are properly covered. This kind of coverage usually includes medical expenses, but may cover other things as well.
One way you can bring your car insurance costs down is to accept higher deductibles on your policy. Insurance companies will often charge you less if you choose a policy with a high deductible. You are less likely to file a claim for small amounts when your deductible is higher. If you do use this tactic, remember that you will have to pay more money should you need to submit a claim.
TIP! Tickets and points from accidents will reflect against your driving record and you?ll have to pay more for vehicle insurance coverage. Conversely, the expiration or removal of those items from your record can also lower the rates you pay.
Try to pay your car insurance on an annual basis rather than monthly. Your insurance company could be adding an additional three to five dollars to your bill. Paying annually could save you 60 dollars a year. It can become a source of frustration on top of your other bills. The less payments you have, the better.
TIP! Many different things will help you decide on auto insurance. For example marriage, your gender and even your age are factors.
If you drive fewer than 7,500 miles in a year, you are likely to qualify for a discount with your insurance company. Driving your car less is one good way for a person to lower the cost of their auto insurance.
TIP! You may not want to buy after-market add-ons if you don?t need them. Luxuries in your vehicle, while nice, are not a necessity.
Don?t get caught without auto insurance today! Protect your finances when you protect yourself with auto insurance. The advice in this article should help you choose the best company and

I?ve been a fan of Daniel Craig?s portrayal of British super-spy James Bond ever since he came to the wildly successful franchise. He?s almost singlehandedly reversed a decades-long decline in acting and storytelling as the films came more and more to rely on gadgets, guns and girls for box-office appeal. Skyfall continues that good pattern
Why do legions of fans like the new James Bond? The same reason lots of clients like what we do. You might say we?re like the James Bond of website copywriting.
A few points of similarity:
1. Not Just a Hired Gun. Bond is a highly trained professional and a bulldog for Her Majesty?s Secret Service, going to the ends of the Earth to get the job done.
We also work with clients long-term, doing whatever we can do to help them prosper through highly-targeted messaging and calls to action that hit the bullseye.
2. Plays to Win. Bond rolls with the punches, patches himself up and throws himself back into the fray until the goal is achieved.
When we?ve got a SEO website copywriting project, we are bloody-minded about getting the job done. If a section doesn?t quite gel together like the client wants on a first draft, we?ll attack the problem again until it?s ?mission accomplished?.
3. Doesn?t Rely on Technology. Q has made a comeback with Skyfall, but Daniel Craig?s Bond still seems to get the job done without the need to resort to gadgets like submersible cars or a laser-packing wristwatch.
We like technology. We use it where it makes our job easier. But we understand that software, apps and mobile devices are just things that help us do our job. The human element is still front and center in website copywriting. Doing it right takes training, good instincts and and keen business intelligence.
4. Works well with others. When Bond is deep undercover, it may seem like he?s working alone. In reality, he has to constantly get people to help him accomplish the mission (whether they realize they?re helping him or not).
We will often act as project manager, bringing in website developers or graphic designers as needed to help deliver a finished website for a client. We also consider the client to be a partner, proving us with the raw data and direction we need to do our job properly, for mutual benefit.
5. Very Social. Oddly enough for a secret agent, just about everyone seems to know James Bond?s name. He must have lots of friends on Facebook and Twitter.
We don?t just write website content; we advise and help our clients to connect on social media platforms with the customers who love them. It?s not enough to have great content ? you need to make sure people see it. Otherwise, it?s about as public as a secret spy message stuck in a locked box in a villain?s lair.
Need some help with your next communications, marketing or copywriting project? We?re ready to carry out your mission.

Exploring the Post-Diagnostic Grief Response?
(c) Madelyn Griffith-Haynie, CTP, CMC, ACT, MCC, SCAC
Part of the Grief & Diagnosis Series ? all rights reservedwebweaver clipart
Question:?What do the following expressions have in common?
- ?Oh thank goodness!? Now I can have a life!?
- ?You think I have what????Why didn?t they find this out before??
- ?Why my child???
- ?He?s a perfectly normal BOY! Why do they have to pathologize everything??
- ?I don?t need medication, I just need to try harder now that I know what I?m dealing with.?
- ?Those @#$% doctors don?t know anything!?
- ?If only I?d known this earlier, my life would have been completely different!?
- ?Tell my boss?? Are you nuts??
Answer:?They are all?various expressions that have been uttered in response to diagnosis ? each expressing one of the various?stages of grief?that we all cycle through on our way toward a new?acceptance of ourselves and those around us. They represent steps on the pathway to?acceptance of a diagnosis and its integration into our lives and our new sense of Self.
The majority of the items above are statements uttered by one of my clients, practically immediately following diagnosis. (The first one was my own, by the way)
Did you notice that some of the expressions represented the response of the individual diagnosed, while others came out of the mouths and minds of someone close to the person with the diagnosis?
Yep. Nothing changes our view of reality?quite as quickly as a diagnosis.
In the few seconds it takes a professional to assign a label to a set of symptoms and speak it aloud, everything suddenly looks very different in the lives of those who must adapt to this seemingly brand-new reality.
Everyone involved has no choice but to respond to that change in some manner. Even individuals who adapt to change fairly well otherwise tend to struggle when the need to adapt is initiated by a diagnosis.
A lot.? Diagnosis changes everything. ?As everyone involved responds to the sudden change that diagnosis represents, the grief process is initiated by the loss of whatever they had believed (or wanted to believe), right up to the moment the diagnosis was uttered. ?We may not mourn, but still we grieve.
Although most of us are relatively resilient, finding a way to deal with whatever life throws our way (effectively enough), grieving for the loss of what was takes time. It happens fastest with conscious attention to the process.
Individuals who tend to cope with life by pushing unpleasant details ?down,? whether deciding??I?ll think about it tomorrow,? like Scarlett O?Hara, or soldiering on stoically regardless, paying no attention to ?the elephant under the rug,? will eventually discover the limitations of that approach.
I would like to suggest that perhaps some of the difficulties and roadblocks you are experiencing in your life have a direct connection to some unprocessed grief directly related to your diagnosis, whatever it is.
Because until we consciously acknowledge and work through what?s going on in our individual-specific grieving process, we will continue to cycle through its phases unconsciously ??reacting, but never truly at choice.
Until we are at choice it is difficult to move forward.
There have been incidents in most of our lives that have taught us to expect the appearance of grief after the loss of something significant:? the death of a loved one, the loss of a job, the dissolution of a marriage, or in reaction to a serious health crises.
Many of us are also familiar with a response that is similar when our expectations are disappointed in a significant manner:? not getting into the college of our choice, being passed over for a promotion, or hearing that our children will not be spending the holidays with us this year, for example.
Sometimes, when expectations are disappointed, the strength of our emotional reaction surprises us, since it seems we have, in fact, lost nothing but a hoped-for outcome. ?It makes no sense, we argue. ?Nothing was actually lost, so there is nothing to grieve.
The loss of a potential future
The truth is that anything that suddenly impacts our sense of who we are will trigger the grief response to some degree, even when the change seems to be one that will ultimately lead to a significant improvement in our situation. ?Consciously or unconsciously, we must say goodbye to a particular imagined future, coming to terms with our fears about how the sudden change in our experience of reality will impact the outcome of our hopes and plans for our futures and our lives.

Phillip Martin, artist
Most ADD professionals have observed in the lives of their clients, that part of the process of coming to terms with their ADD diagnosis ? learning to reshape their lives to work with it successfully ? includes a predictable grieving process.
Some clients and patients take longer to come to terms with the process, but it seems to take?at least?a year for things to restabilize.
Until we have gone through each landmark ? each of the holidays and days of personal significance ? we continue to experience the disorientation of the difference between what we have always expected and what our experience is now.
It?s a PROCESS
There is only one absolute about the grieving process:?
we have to go through it to get through it.
What have we lost by the confirmation of diagnosis?
It?s different for each of us, depending on what we value, what we want for ourselves and our lives, and the nature of our diagnoses, but most of us will be able to relate to the list below:
- Our sense of mental and physical health: a belief that we are ?normal??(whatever that is)
- Our sense of efficacy:?The feeling that we are?in control?of our lives and our functioning (or could be if we put enough time and effort into it).
- Our sense of autonomy:??our belief that we can function without help (especially when the diagnosis is physical, and whenever medication is suggested at the time of diagnosis.)
- Our sense of potential mastery: ?The belief that some day we would?have [whatever particular hoped for outcome the diagnosis can now be "blamed" for].
A few items mentioned by ADDers include a sense of time, a sense of direction, and an organically organized lifestyle that empowers their ability to follow through.
Those whose diagnoses include physical components are also likely to feel the?loss of potential physical accomplishments (even when they had never taken any?steps toward the goal and had no concrete plans to do so before the?sudden?realization that it would no longer be an option to do so), like?running?a marathon, playing par golf, or surfing in Hawaii, for example.
- Our imagined?perfect future?if we didn?t have [whatever it is], or if we had found out sooner.
- The awareness of??real? losses?that resulted from not understanding ourselves in the context of our diagnosis:? friends and intimate relationships, jobs, degrees, and more! This is particularly applicable for those with psychological disorders and neurological dysregulations.
Grief isn?t logical ? it?s emotional, psychological and neurological.
The thoughts and questions that come up for all of us following diagnosis become part of the journey we must undertake to get to the place where our equilibrium is restored. ?Whether we experience it as ?grief? or whether we prefer to think of it more as an ?adjustment period,? and regardless of the level of resiliency with which we process, we are grieving.?We are grieving for our past and for our future as we?ve imagined it.
Following diagnosis, judging by my twenty-plus years of coaching experience, we cycle through stages similar enough to those articulated by Elisabeth K?bler-Ross?in her work with terminally ill children (published in 1969 in her book?On Death and Dying), that it makes sense to piggy-back on her terms.
As we work our way toward the stage I refer to as ?positive acceptance,??where we are finally ready to move on with our lives, most of us cycle through the following stages at least once, however briefly:
Shock,?Anger,?Denial,?Bargaining,
Depression?(mood vs disorder),
Resignation, and Preliminary AcceptanceWe will have reached the stage I call ?positive acceptance??when we are able to incorporate a vision of the future that can include our diagnosis without identifying with it, embracing our potential for change and growth in expected and unexpected ways.
Positive Acceptance?reframes the impact of our diagnosis significantly.
It is only when we become ?stuck? in one of the stages of grief that most of us take the time to stop to wonder what is going on with us and why we can?t ?just get on with it.?
Identifying the stages so that we can place ourselves clearly into one of them can make us feel better immediately ? regaining our sense of control in a very real, brain-based manner.
Once we are back in control, we are able to process our emotions with greater velocity.
When we can identify where we are in the process of dealing with post-diagnosis grief, we might discover that some of the difficulties we are experiencing are primarily a result of being stuck ? where we keep cycling back through various stages, rather than passing on to positive acceptance, the place where we are ready and able to move on with our lives.
The objective of the Grief Series?is to raise ?grief awareness? ? to help you identify grief when it appears, to understand and accept that your reaction is a normal and predictable part of this business of living life, as well as to introduce a few techniques that may allow you to move on as quickly as possible, much stronger, more focused, and more in control as a result of our efforts. ?So stay tuned.
As always,?if you want notification of new articles ? in a particular series or category, or?any?new posts on this blog ? give your name and email to the nice form on the top of the skinny column to the right. ?(You only have to do this once, so if you?ve already asked for notification about a prior series, you?re covered for this one too)?STRICT?No Spam?Policy
