Colorado "Frozen Dead Guy" festival to go on with or without corpse

DENVER (Reuters) - The frozen corpse that has inspired a Colorado town's whimsical "Frozen Dead Guy Days" celebration may soon be put on ice somewhere else, but festival organizers said the body's removal will not have a chilling effect on the annual event.

"We will continue on whether or not Bredo Morstoel is here," festival owner Amanda MacDonald said Wednesday of the man whose body has been packed in dry ice outside Nederland, Colorado, since 1993.

A financial dispute between Morstoel's grandson, Tryve Bauge, and the man hired to replenish the dry ice on a monthly basis, Bo Shaffer, has led to Bauge threatening to move his grandfather's body out of Colorado.

Each month for 18 years, Shaffer has hauled 1,700 pounds (770 kg) of dry ice - carbon dioxide in solid form - to a remote shed above Nederland to keep the corpse of Morstoel at minus-24 degrees Fahrenheit (minus-31 degrees Celsius) and in a state of cryonic suspension.

But Shaffer said he quit after Bauge refused to pay for the rising costs of fuel and ice, which has made the endeavor unprofitable.

"It takes two of us to make the four-hour roundtrip," Shaffer told Reuters. "My quitting is the only way to get his (Bauge's) attention."

Bauge, who lives in Norway, did not immediately return an email message seeking comment about the dispute. But he told the Boulder Daily Camera newspaper that he is exploring the possibility of moving his grandfather to the Cryonics Institute in Michigan.

Cryonics is the process of freezing and storing a corpse to prevent decomposition in anticipation of medical technology that could bring the dead back to life. Liquid nitrogen, which is far colder than dry ice, is typically used for cryonic preservation.

Morstoel died of heart failure in his native Norway in 1989, and Bauge had his grandfather's body frozen and transported to a cryonics facility in California. Ultimately he had the corpse moved to Nederland, where Bauge lived at the time.

When Bauge was deported because of an expired visa, he hired Shaffer to act as an unofficial caretaker.

COFFIN RACES, HEARSE PARADE

At first, townspeople in the mountain village 17 miles southwest of Boulder, Colorado, were aghast at the thought of a frozen body being stored in their midst.

But they ultimately embraced the idea of an annual festival surrounding its most famous, albeit deceased, resident.

The late-winter celebration features activities such as coffin races, a hearse parade, a frozen salmon toss and snow beach volleyball. There are even tours to the site of Morstoel's sarcophagus, although his remains are not open for viewing.

MacDonald said the festival attracts about 10,000 people over its three-day run, which is held in early March, and has taken on a life of its own, with or without its namesake dead guy.

The nonprofit Cryonics Institute in Clinton Township, Michigan, was founded by the late physicist Robert Ettinger, who was known as a pioneer in cryonics.

His son, David Ettinger, said by telephone that privacy concerns prevent him from discussing any potential patients. However, he did say ideal candidates for suspension are people who have recently died.

Such was the case with his father, he said, who was prepared for the procedure in the days before his death in 2011 at the age of 92.

"We've never had a patient presented to us under those circumstances," he said of a corpse that has been packed in dry ice for nearly two decades.

The institute has about 100 suspended corpses, and charges a one-time $35,000 fee and $120 annually for "human cryopreservation."

Yahoo CEO fleshes out plans, new CFO named

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - New Yahoo Inc CEO Marissa Mayer laid out broad goals for the Internet giant in her first companywide address Tuesday, and received an enthusiastic reception from a workforce that has faced years of uncertainty and management turmoil.

Mayer mainly sketched broad visions rather than concrete details for her turnaround strategy, according to several people familiar with what was said in the tightly controlled meeting.

But her personal credibility as a long-time senior Google Inc executive, combined with some recent morale-boosting moves such as providing new iPhones and free food for employees, have had a dramatic and positive impact on the "vibe" at the company, one of the people said.

Speaking at Yahoo's Sunnyvale, California headquarters, Mayer stressed the importance of personalizing Yahoo's Web services and adapting the company's products to mobile devices, AllThingsD reported. Although her speech touched on frequently mentioned industry themes, Mayer's delivery nonetheless won spontaneous applause from the workforce, according to a second person with knowledge of the company meeting.

"It was some of the same types of lines that had been said before, but people believe it now," said the person, who declined to be identified because the information is private.

After a steady stream of occasionally embarrassing reports, Yahoo in recent months has clamped down firmly on leaks to the press. Attendees at Tuesday's assembly were instructed to shut their laptops during Mayer's address.

Yahoo declined repeated requests for comment.

Mayer first presented her strategy to Yahoo's board in meetings last week, outlining plans to bring back advertisers and expand the company's user base, said a third source, who declined to be identified because the information was not public.

Yahoo also announced that it appointed as its new chief financial officer Ken Goldman, formerly CFO at cybersecurity software firm Fortinet.

The appointment comes two months after Yahoo's board tapped Mayer to restore a household Internet name overshadowed by rivals like Facebook Inc and Google in recent years.

Yahoo remains one of the world's most popular websites, with more than 700 million monthly visitors who use products like its email service and read its news pages, according to the company. But Yahoo's revenue has stagnated as online display advertising prices have fallen and as it faces competition from Facebook and Google.

Mayer, Yahoo's third CEO in about a year, arrived after a tumultuous period in the company in which former CEO Scott Thompson resigned after less than 6 months on the job over a controversy over his academic credentials. Yahoo co-founder Jerry Yang had also stepped down as CEO, and an internal reorganization eliminated thousands of jobs.

Mayer's latest hire, Goldman, replaces Tim Morse, who served last year as interim Yahoo CEO while the company underwent another episode of leadership turmoil.

BOOST MORALE, SCANT DETAILS

Since taking the helm, Mayer has sought to boost morale at the nearly two-decade-old Internet company, eliminating corporate bureaucracy and introducing perks such as free cafeteria food and state-of-the-art smartphones for employees that are standard fare at other Silicon Valley Web companies.

But Mayer has so far offered scant details about her plan to revive revenue growth and to expand its audience - a challenge that has frustrated a string of her predecessors as well as countless shareholders.

Many analysts and investors believe Mayer will renew Yahoo's focus on Web technology and products rather than beefing up online content, as appeared to be the mission during interim CEO Ross Levinsohn's brief tenure.

That has raised concerns among some investors that Mayer will embark on an expensive acquisition spree.

Mayer assuaged some of those fears last week when Yahoo closed the sale of half of its stake in Chinese Internet company Alibaba Group. Yahoo said it would give shareholders $3 billion of the deal's $4.3 billion in after-tax proceeds.

No trouble with "Curve" at box office for new Eastwood movie

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A month ago, "Trouble with the Curve" was just a low-key fall movie starring Clint Eastwood as a stubborn, aging baseball scout.

But after the Oscar-winner's headline-making "empty chair" speech at the Republican National Convention in August, the film could be set for a box office home run when it opens on Friday.

Eastwood, 82, used to performing multiple duties, handed the directing reigns to someone else for the first time in 20 years for "Trouble with the Curve." He plays a baseball scout with failing eyesight who has a fractured relationship with his strong-willed attorney daughter, played by Amy Adams.

The movie opens in U.S. theaters after weeks of public debate, and many jokes, over Eastwood's unscripted August 30 political speech that Hollywood box office watchers say has stirred interest in the movie and will likely boost ticket sales.

As of Wednesday, "Curve" was among the top five best-selling advance tickets for the upcoming weekend on movie-going destination website Fandango.

Based on social media buzz including Facebook and Twitter, Boxoffice.com predicted that "Curve," along with new horror movie release "House at the End of the Street" starring "Hunger Games" star Jennifer Lawrence, will be fighting it out for first place at the North American box office.

The tracking website predicted "Curve" will take in about $18.5 million with "House" closely behind at around $18 million.

"Clint has the ability to surprise," Boxoffice.com editor Phil Contrino told Reuters. "'Gran Torino,' the last film he starred in, shocked everyone with what it did at the box office. His audience is mostly conservative anyway so I don't think his chair speech at the RNC is going to hurt ticket sales. If anything it will help him because more people are talking about him."

NO TROUBLE GETTING ATTENTION

"Trouble with the Curve," from movie studio Warner Bros., will also compete for audiences with science-fiction action film "Dredd 3D" and the Jake Gyllenhaal crime drama "End of Watch." Paul Thomas Anderson's highly touted "The Master" also opens wide this weekend after a limited opening last week.

Paul Dergarabedian, box office analyst at Hollywood.com, said that Eastwood's speech "certainly has raised awareness of Clint and therefore the movie, and that may translate into bigger-than-expected numbers for the film."

"Ultimately, it comes down to whether or not movie-goers base their ticket-buying decisions on extraneous forces such as a star's extra-curricular activities," Dergarabedian added.

"Curve" is directed by Eastwood's longtime producing partner Robert Lorenz, making his directorial debut. It's the first time Eastwood has appeared in a movie directed by someone other than himself since Wolfgang Petersen's 1993 film "In the Line of Fire."

"After (2008's) 'Gran Torino,' I thought, 'This is kind of stupid to be doing both jobs,'" Eastwood told reporters at a recent press conference. "I've been (directing) for 40 something years and I thought maybe I should just do one or the other...so this was an opportunity to do that."

Not directing his own film "was actually quite relaxing," according to Eastwood, who said that during downtime on set, he worked on his putting and played golf with actor and singer Justin Timberlake, who plays a rival baseball scout who has eyes for Amy Adams' character.

The low key schedule was enough to make Eastwood consider keeping acting and directing as two separate duties.

"I probably won't do both again, at least for the moment," he said. "But I said I wasn't going to act again a few years ago and that changed too. So sometimes you just lie a lot!"

While it's not considered a likely Oscar contender, "Curve" has earned mixed to positive reviews. Variety called the chemistry between Eastwood and Adams "wonderfully spiky" and Boxoffice Magazine wrote the film is "filled with heart, humor, family drama and fantastic acting."

However, the New York Observer felt the film was "less riveting than it ought to be" while film critic Marshall Fine of Hollywood & Fine thought the movie was "dull" and "without enough laughs or tension to keep you involved."

Regardless of how the film does, Eastwood told reporters he's enjoyed playing the older man roles that have come his way in recent years. In fact, they have not forced him to face any inner fears regarding his own aging process.

"At a certain age, you're just glad to be there," said Eastwood. "Be realistic about where you are in life and enjoy it. I've enjoyed the journey to this stage and so I intend to enjoy the rest of the journey."

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Google Inc rejected a request by the White House on Friday to reconsider its decision to keep online a controversial YouTube movie clip that has ignited anti-American protests in the Middle East. Leica D-Lux 6 and V-Lux 40 hands-on (video)

Image

The Leica deluge continues here at Photokina in Cologne. We played around with two new point-and-shoots from the company, starting with the D-Lux 6, the larger and pricier of the pair. The camera features an all black body, with a red Leica logo on the front. It's got a 1.7-inch CMOS image sensor, a processor capable of ISO 80 to 12800 and adjustable aperture on the lens that can be changed with a twist. It's also got a large three-inch display on the rear and is capable of full HD video.

The cheaper V-Lux 40 features a similar all-black build with red logo in a smaller form, with a 1/2.33-inch CMOS sensor. On the rear of the camera, you'll find a three-inch touch display with the same bright resolution as the D-Lux 6. The camera, which bears a striking resemblance to the Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS20, can also do 1080p video. The V-Lux is available now here in Europe for €590 and the D-Lux is coming soon, priced at €699.

The FIDM Blog: Interview With Vis Comm Alumna and Web Art ...

Sw_f_la_blog_img

Visual Communications Alumna Shana Wardle is the Web Art Director at BCBGMAXAZRIA. We recently caught up with her to hear all about this exciting career.

How did your position come about at BCBGMAXAZRIA?

While at the Retail Design Collective on the FIDM Visual Communications trip to NYC, I met Sean Sager, a talented Los Angeles based creative consultant who also lived in Los Angles. Through him, I was able to make several phenomenal professional connections which led to many creative job opportunities including Bloomingdale?s, Nordstrom, Jessica Simpson, Juicy Couture, BCBGMAXAZRIA, etc.

After being in the visual department for Juicy Couture and looking for more of a challenge, I reached out to a contact I had made at BCBG regarding an available Art Directing position. After a fabulous interview and two short weeks, I started my new journey and am absolutely ecstatic to be part of a company that is visionary and the front-runner of fashion.

What are your day-to-day responsibilities?

I am an Art Director focusing on web as a whole, and it is very rewarding knowing that I am designing for a large scale audience, being that the online atmosphere is continually growing and expanding. I work closely with my team of designers, the site editor, and the chief creative officer to create branded messaging through emails, homepages, landing pages, hybrids, catalogs, and ?lookbooks.

I oversee all online collateral for several of our brands including (but not limited to) Runway, Herve Leger, BCBGeneration, Lola, Factory, etc. as well as all international repurposes for Europe, Canada, Japan, and Mexico. We utilize editorial imagery per delivery to speak to the customer through the ever-evolving world wide web.

What do you? love about this job and why?

The brand concept, marketing tools and creative outreach of BCBG do a fabulous job of implementing the way of bon chic, bon genre, and the overall necessity of grace and class. With long days and immense effort, we all work together to generate a consistent, cohesive message to the customer. Craft is the driving force behind each day, and with so much passion and positive energy, it?s hard not to love every second of every day!

How did FIDM help prepare you for your career?

I can?t even begin to describe how FIDM prepared me for my professional career. While I was attending, I was a sponge, completely engulfed in everything my instructors taught, hanging on their every word. From Windows to Styling, Set Design to Graphic Design, I felt exhilarated and found my time in class to be crucial to my career. The hands-on atmosphere and projects seemed to be like a job itself, and once in the ?real? world I felt such a comfort of knowing I was fully capable of what I was doing because I had done it before in a class at FIDM.

First Word On Results From GRAIL, NASA's Moon Gravity Mission

An anonymous reader writes "Nature has advance word on the first science results from GRAIL, NASA's twin probes launched a year ago which are mapping the gravity of the Moon from lunar orbit. This is coming out in advance of any official publication or NASA release, so the data isn't available, but the story trails what the PI Maria Zuber told a Harvard CFA colloquium last week are some of the team's key scientific findings: including that the Moon's crust is substantially thinner than once thought; and some of the more speculative impact basins haven't been confirmed."

Sjogren's Syndrome And Pregnancy

Since it is less common, many pregnant women are caught in surprise when they learned from their doctors that they are suffering from Sjogren?s syndrome. It commenced the moment of constant worry and anxiety because the disease exposes their babies to higher risks for neonatal lupus, heart problems and even death. What is Sjogren?s Syndrome exactly?

Sjogren?s Syndrome and Its Symptoms

Sjogren?s Syndrome is a type of autoimmune disease primarily characterized by the drying up of the eyes and the salivary gland which may lead to the dryness of immediate body parts that require moisture including the skin, throat, vagina and nose. Sjogren?s syndrome may also affect the blood vessels, joints, lungs, digestive organs, nerves, liver, pancreas, brain and kidneys.

It primarily involves the inflammation of tissues and glands of the body. The swelling of the salivary gland usually results to cavities, dental decay, swallowing difficulties, mouth dryness, stones, mouth sores, infection of the parotid gland and mouth inflammation.

According to research, people with Sjogren?s syndrome have deficiency in Omega 3 essential fatty acids, magnesium, zinc and selenium. Aside from the dryness of the mouth and eyes, some patients suffer from symptoms such as swollen parotid glands, recurrent mouth infection, eye discomfort, hoarseness, blurred vision and difficulty in eating and swallowing. It can also cause pain and fatigue which can affect the patient?s quality of life.

What Is An Autoimmune Disease

When we say autoimmune diseases, it refers to the abnormal functioning of the immune system. Instead of helping the body fight against diseases, the immune system tends to attack the organs of the body. In Sjogren?s Syndrome, the immune system attacks the salivary gland which produces saliva, and the lacriminal gland which produces tears. This eventually leads to the dryness of the eyes and mouth.

Risk Factors For Sjogren?s Syndrome

According to research, this autoimmune disease can occur to people of all ages but it is more common to people who are over 40 years of age, and women are 9 times more susceptible to this condition compared to men.

Even people diagnosed with rheumatic diseases such as lupus or rheumatoid arthritis are at a greater risk of suffering from Sjogren?s Syndrome.

Sjogren?s Syndrome in Pregnant Women

Women who have been diagnosed with Sjogren?s Syndrome should consult their doctors especially when they are planning to get pregnant. It can actually increase a woman?s risk for miscarriage. Women who are suffering from this condition usually have antibodies known as antiphospholipids. It makes the blood more prone to clotting. Thus, miscarriage is more likely to occur when the blood in the placenta has clotted.

Many babies were lost during the course of pregnancy due to this condition. It actually causes the amniotic fluid to be filled with hardened crystal-type particles which can suffocate and kill the developing baby in the uterus.

In rare cases, this autoimmune disease can cause congenital heart block which is characterized by an abnormal heart rhythm or rate in infant. When this happens, doctors usually prescribe corticosteroid medications to reduce the inflammation.

Also, doctors have to carefully monitor the baby?s condition throughout the pregnancy. According to research, congenital heart block sometimes necessitates early delivery. In very rare cases, Sjogren?s syndrome increases the fetus? risk for heart problems. Also, it heightens the baby?s susceptibility to lupus.

Treatment Options For Sjogren?s Syndrome

In most cases, treatments for Sjogren?s syndrome are directed towards providing relief to its symptoms. Some doctors recommend the use of eyedrops which can reduce the inflammation of the glands surrounding the eyes, in order to increase the production of tears. Frequent intake of water, saliva substitutes and chewing gum can also help in preventing the mouth from getting dry. Meanwhile, for nasal dryness, patients can use nasal saline irrigation and humidifiers.

Sucking on glycerine swabs and sugarless lemon drops can also help in inducing the production of saliva. Also, drinking plenty of fluid and getting adequate dental care can help in preventing mouth dryness. Saliva stimulants such as cevimeline and pilocarpine can also help in addressing dry mouth.

Surgery may sometimes be prescribed by doctors in order to seal the tear ducts which drain tears from the eyes. Silicone plugs or collagens are then inserted into the ducts for temporary closure. Eventually, collagen dissolves and silicone plugs are removed. In this case, doctors may recommend laser to seal the ducts permanently.

Apple?s Magic Is In The Turn, Not The Prestige

The Prestige 11The opening dialogue of Christopher Nolan's 2006 film, The Prestige:
Every great magic trick consists of three parts or acts. The first part is called "The Pledge". The magician shows you something ordinary: a deck of cards, a bird or a man. He shows you this object. Perhaps he asks you to inspect it to see if it is indeed real, unaltered, normal. But of course...it probably isn't. The second act is called "The Turn". The magician takes the ordinary something and makes it do something extraordinary. Now you're looking for the secret... but you won't find it, because of course you're not really looking. You don't really want to know. You want to be fooled. But you wouldn't clap yet. Because making something disappear isn't enough; you have to bring it back. That's why every magic trick has a third act, the hardest part, the part we call "The Prestige".
This is what was on my mind following today's Apple event. It's essentially the story of the iPhone.

Anti-Islam filmmaker in hiding after protests

(AP) ? An Israeli filmmaker based in California went into hiding Tuesday after his movie attacking Islam's prophet Muhammad sparked angry assaults by ultra-conservative Muslims on U.S. missions in Egypt and Libya, where one American was killed.

Speaking by phone from an undisclosed location, writer and director Sam Bacile remained defiant, saying Islam is a cancer and that the 56-year-old intended his film to be a provocative political statement condemning the religion.

Protesters angered over Bacile's film opened fire on and burned down the U.S. consulate in the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi, killing an American diplomat on Tuesday. In Egypt, protesters scaled the walls of the U.S. embassy in Cairo and replaced an American flag with an Islamic banner.

"This is a political movie," said Bacile. "The U.S. lost a lot of money and a lot of people in wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, but we're fighting with ideas."

Bacile, a California real estate developer who identifies himself as an Israeli Jew, said he believes the movie will help his native land by exposing Islam's flaws to the world.

"Islam is a cancer, period," he said repeatedly, his solemn voice thickly accented.

The two-hour movie, "Innocence of Muslims," cost $5 million to make and was financed with the help of more than 100 Jewish donors, said Bacile, who wrote and directed it.

The film claims Muhammad was a fraud. An English-language 13-minute trailer on YouTube shows an amateur cast performing a wooden dialogue of insults disguised as revelations about Muhammad, whose obedient followers are presented as a cadre of goons.

It depicts Muhammad as a feckless philanderer who approved of child sexual abuse, among other overtly insulting claims that have caused outrage.

Muslims find it offensive to depict Muhammad in any manner, let alone insult the prophet. A Danish newspaper's 2005 publication of 12 caricatures of the prophet triggered riots in many Muslim countries.

Though Bacile was apologetic about the American who was killed as a result of the outrage over his film, he blamed lax embassy security and the perpetrators of the violence.

"I feel the security system (at the embassies) is no good," said Bacile. "America should do something to change it."

A consultant on the film, Steve Klein, said the filmmaker is concerned for family members who live in Egypt. Bacile declined to confirm.

Klein said he vowed to help Bacile make the movie but warned him that "you're going to be the next Theo van Gogh." Van Gogh was a Dutch filmmaker killed by a Muslim extremist in 2004 after making a film that was perceived as insulting to Islam.

"We went into this knowing this was probably going to happen," Klein said.

Bacile's film was dubbed into Egyptian Arabic by someone he doesn't know, but he speaks enough Arabic to confirm that the translation is accurate. It was made in three months in the summer of 2011, with 59 actors and about 45 people behind the camera.

The full film has been shown once, to a mostly empty theater in Hollywood earlier this year, said Bacile.

Talks to end Chicago teacher strike make progress

CHICAGO (AP) ? Negotiations between union and school officials in the nation's third-largest school district resumed Thursday with an air of optimism and signals that a teachers' strike could end soon.

Chicago Teachers Union President Karen Lewis said students could be back in class by Monday, a week after teachers walked out. Lewis initially suggested classes could resume as early as Friday, then said approval of a final proposal would require a union delegates' meeting, which could take more time.

"We still have some major stuff we have to look at," she told reporters Thursday on her way into the talks. "Doing something fast is not the way to go. Haste makes waste."

Roughly 25,000 teachers have been on the picket line since Monday while negotiators have been locked in tense talks. Issues on the table have included teacher evaluations that incorporate students' standardized test scores and job security.

Contract talks ended shortly before midnight Wednesday, and Lewis said the sides had definitely come closer together. School board President David Vitale was also more positive after Wednesday's talks and was hopeful of a deal.

The optimism was evident on the picket lines, too.

"I know that we will have a good resolution to this, and I do believe it will be soon," said Michelle Gunderson, an elementary school teacher picketing on the city's North Side. "And they do not mean to have us be embroiled in this for longer than we have to."

Negotiators appeared to make progress on teacher evaluations in talks that ran until nearly midnight Wednesday. The school board's latest proposal scaled back on penalties to teachers after the two sides argued over what percent of student performance should be weighed and how that should be used to judge job performance.

Under an old proposal, the Chicago Teachers Union estimated that some 6,000 teachers could lose their jobs within two years.

The latest offer released Wednesday included provisions for evaluations of tenured teachers that would not result in dismissal in the first year. It also altered categories that teachers can be rated on and an appeals process.

School districts nationwide have grappled with teacher assessments. The Obama administration has given states incentives to use student performance as a component of evaluations, though the issue has been most contentious in Chicago.

Teachers have said it's unfair to use test scores to evaluate them especially with other factors affecting student learning that they can't control: poverty, hunger and the inability to speak fluent English, to name just a few.

Chicago's walkout canceled class for approximately 350,000 students and has left parents scrambling to make other arrangements for young children. The district has kept some schools open on a limited basis, mostly to provide meals and supervision. More than 80 percent of Chicago Public Schools students qualify for free or reduced-price lunches.

The walkout is the first Chicago teachers' strike in 25 years. In 1987, the teachers strike lasted 19 days.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel has called the strike unnecessary and urged the union to continue negotiating with students in class.

Great interest in science and technology among Swedish students

Science in school doesn't capture students' interest in science and technology, but science in society does. With that as a starting point, there are good opportunities to improve teaching, as a new thesis from Linkping University shows.

"The students share the teachers' view of the important role of science and technology in society, but the teaching doesn't take up what the students want to learn," says Anders Jidesj, defending his thesis on teaching and learning science and technology.

In his thesis, Jidesj analyses Sweden's results in the worldwide "Relevance of Science Education" (ROSE) project. Some 50 countries on every continent participate in the project, which investigates what interest and experience ninth-year students have in science and technology, and what they think of the school's teaching.

Teaching in science and technology is important for general education and for recruiting students to higher education, but Jidesj argues that schools emphasize recruitment at the cost of general education, and that factual knowledge has a strong tradition.

The thesis shows that both boys and girls are interested in science and technology, but there are also differences between the sexes. Girls are more oriented towards the medical sciences, while boys emphasize the dramatic, violent aspects to a greater extent.

Young people also encounter technology and the sciences outside school, and in the media. When Jidesj compared students' interests with the program content of Discovery, the popular scientific television channel, there turned out to be major similarities.

"School teaching in science and technology is getting competition from the traditions of popular science. A stronger connection to the development of society and to the media could raise the quality of teaching," he says.

He's deepening a media theory perspective that had previously not been developed within science education research, problematising young people's interest in science and technology and arguing that their experience of taking in and interpreting messages from the media are significant in today's society.

DreamWorks Plans All of Me Remake

The remake bell rang once more in Hollywood today as DreamWorks pushed ahead on a new version of Steve Martin / Lily Tomlin comedy All Of Me.

In the 1984 original, which Carl Reiner brought to life, a millionairess (Tomlin) discovered she was dying and, in an attempt to gain immortality, transferred her spirit into the body of a nerdy attorney (Martin). Hilarity ? and some real, actual emotion ? ensues as the two try to find a way to work together.

In the new version, which currently coasts a script by Never Been Kissed / The Vow writers Abby Kohn and Marc Silverstein, the gender is getting a switch itself, with a guy?s soul travelling into a woman?s body.

DreamWorks plucked the project out of turnaround limbo last year, but is only now setting about doing something with it. At the moment, the script is bubbling away in development with no director or cast attached yet. Still, whoever does take it on will be following in the footsteps of Reiner, Martin and Tomlin, and there are probably easier jobs out there. Such as lion taming. Or bomb disposal officer??

AP Exclusive: Knox boyfriend maintains innocence

Raffaele Sollecito, whose budding love affair with American exchange student Amanda Knox helped land him in an Italian prison for four years, maintains the couple's innocence in a new book but acknowledges that their sometimes bizarre behavior after her roommate's killing gave police reason for suspicion.

The pair was imprisoned for the November 2007 death of Meredith Kercher at Knox's apartment in Perugia, north of Rome. An appeals court overturned their conviction and freed them last fall, issuing a 143-page opinion that blasted the utter lack of evidence against them. Rudy Guede, a petty criminal who was convicted separately, remains imprisoned and is serving a 16-year-sentence.

Sollecito's book, "Honor Bound," is due out Sept. 18. The Associated Press purchased a copy Tuesday.

In it, he describes how the early days of their relationship became a nightmare: the horror of Kercher's slaying; the misunderstandings that swept them up in the case; their tabloid portrayals as two suspects unrecognizable to themselves.

Knox became "Foxy Knoxy" and received the brunt of the attention as she shopped for underwear after the killing and turned cartwheels in front of investigators. While police investigated the crime scene, Sollecito caressed her and they kissed, unaware of the television news cameras across the street.

Later at the police station she climbed in his lap and draped her arms over him, making Sollecito uneasy, he said.

Police found their behavior "odd" and he acknowledged they had no "real alibi the night of Nov. 1 except each other."

Knox is also writing a book, due out next spring. Her deal, with HarperCollins, is reportedly worth $4 million.

The couple were arrested several days after Kercher's death and later convicted in proceedings that made headlines around the world. Prosecutors portrayed the case as a drug-fueled sexual assault, and Knox and Sollecito were sentenced to 26 years and 25 years, respectively.

The appeals court found the prosecution's theory to be unsupported by any evidence. Prosecutors have appealed the acquittal, and Italy's highest court will hear their arguments next March.

Sollecito frequently criticizes the police for their handling of the case, reaching for a far-fetched conspiracy instead of the simpler explanation that Guede had on his own committed a burglary gone wrong.

Sollecito, then finishing his undergraduate studies in computer science, writes that he met Knox at a classical music concert at the Universita per Stranieri, the University for Foreigners, on Oct. 25, 2007 ? a week before Kercher's death. He asked for her number, and she told him to come by the bar where she'd be working later that night. At the end of the shift, he writes, they took a walk, held hands and kissed. She accepted an invitation to come back to his apartment and spent the night.

Soon the couple became inseparable. She began spending the nights at his apartment. They shopped for groceries together, and took a sightseeing day trip to Assisi.

Sollecito wrote about his first night in prison, saying he wavered between "great waves of indignation and a nagging sense of guilt." He said that while he knew he was innocent, he was angry at himself for having a foggy memory of the night of the killing because he and Knox had smoked marijuana.

When they were finally acquitted, Sollecito writes that he felt "indescribable joy." He remembers looking at the police, hoping to see them appear defeated, but they wouldn't look at him. He saw Knox sobbing, and they later had a private moment in the basement of the courthouse, waiting to be taken back to prison one last time. According to Sollecito, she squeezed his hand and said she couldn't wait to see her home and friends.

Knox moved back to Seattle. It's not clear where Sollecito is living.
