(AP) ? A Chinese crested's short snout, beady eyes and white whiskers earned it the title of World's Ugliest Dog at the annual contest in Northern California on Friday.

Competing for fame, $1,000 and a year's worth of dog cookies, Mugly won the honor by beating out 28 other ugly dogs from around the world.

The 8-year-old rescue dog from the United Kingdom will also be invited for a photo shoot and will receive a VIP stay at the local Sheraton.

"I couldn't speak when they announced Mugly's name," said Bev Nicholson, the dog's owner. "I didn't know which way to look. I was shaking as much as the dog."

It's not the first time Mugly has been recognized for his unattractiveness. Nicholson said he was named Britain's ugliest dog in 2005.

The contest at the Marin-Sonoma Fairgrounds gets worldwide attention, with reporters and camera crews from around the world traveling to Petaluma, about 40 miles north of San Francisco.

Organizers say the competing dogs are judged for what they term their "natural ugliness in both pedigree and mutt classes."

Mugly's victory was the latest for a Chinese crested. Last year's winner, Yoda, was a Chinese crested and Chihuahua mix.

(AP) ? A Syrian fighter pilot on a training mission flew his MiG-21 warplane to Jordan on Thursday and asked for political asylum, the first defection of an air force pilot with his plane during the 15-month uprising against President Bashar Assad.

The air force is considered fiercely loyal to Assad's regime, and the defection suggests some of Syria's most ironclad allegiances are fraying. It was a triumph for the rebels fighting to overthrow Assad. A spokesman for the rebel Free Syrian Army, Ahmad Kassem, said the group had encouraged the pilot to defect and monitored his activity until the jet landed safely in Jordan.

The pilot, identified as Col. Hassan Hammadeh, removed his air force tag and kneeled on the tarmac in prayer after landing his plane at King Hussein Air Base in Mafraq, Jordan, 45 miles (70 kilometers) north of Amman, a Jordanian security official said.

He said Jordanian official were questioning the defector, but he will be allowed to stay in the country on "humanitarian grounds."

"He was given asylum because if he returned home, his safety will not be guaranteed. He may tortured or killed," the official said. He declined to say what Jordan will do with the jet. The official insisted on anonymity, citing the sensitivity of the matter.

Syria's state-run TV reported earlier in the day that authorities had lost contact with a MiG-21 that was on a training mission in the country. After it became clear the pilot had defected, the state-run news agency quoted an unnamed military official as saying he was "a traitor to his country and his military honor."

Jordanian Information Minister Sameeh Maaytah confirmed that the pilot had defected.

The defection is a sensitive issue for Jordan, which wants to avoid getting dragged into the Syrian conflict. Jordan already has taken in 125,000 Syrian refugees, including hundreds of army and police defectors, and Syria is seeking their return.

Syria is one of Jordan's largest Arab trade partners, with bilateral trade estimated at $470 million last year.

The Syrian regime has been hit with defections before, although none as dramatic as the fighter pilot's. Most have been low-level conscripts in the army.

In March, however, Turkish officials said that two Syrian generals, a colonel and two sergeants had defected from the army and crossed into Turkey. Also in March, Syria's deputy oil minister became the highest-ranking civilian official to join the opposition and urged his countrymen to "abandon this sinking ship" as the nation spiraled toward civil war.

Brig. Gen. Mostafa Ahmad al-Sheik, who fled to Turkey in January, was the highest ranking officer to bolt. In late August, Adnan Bakkour, the attorney general of the central city of Hama, appeared in a video announcing he had defected.

In January, Imad Ghalioun, a member of Syria's parliament, left the country to join the opposition saying the Syrian people are suffering sweeping human rights violations.

WATCH: Who Attacked Andy Cohen on 'RHOC' Reunion?

Admit it. Sometimes you question whether a show like The Real Housewives Of Orange County is "real" at all. But even if it's true that the actions of these outlandish women are highly edited for our entertainment, producers can't control everything. And that became crystal clear during the taping of the season 7 reunion show on June 5th.

E-book battle: Libraries, publishers square off on pricing

E-book publishers are worried about profits shrinking if libraries go digital, and they're hiking e-book prices. Stretched thin by lean budgets, libraries are slow to embrace digital content. Can the two sides reach a solution?

In the hushed atmosphere and among the staid bookshelves of your public library, a battle is brewing over digital content.

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "off"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

On one side are librarians, stretched thin by lean budgets, who are eager to get more electronic books into the hands of readers and satisfy a growing need in their communities. On the other side are publishers, jittery about slim profits, who are making it harder for libraries to get electronic content. Some publishers have raised e-book prices by up to 700 percent for libraries. Others are imposing new lending restrictions. Several major publishing houses aren't selling new e-books to libraries at any price.

"Everyone is trying to figure out what the actual business model is going to look like," says Belinda Boon, a collection development expert at Kent State University's library school in Kent, Ohio. "There have been a lot more efforts in recent months for libraries, vendors, and publishers to try to come to some kinds of agreements."

The standoff is hurting both sides.

For libraries, the tougher purchasing environment is hampering efforts to add electronic holdings, which libraries effectively lease through licensing agreements with distributors. The Tuscaloosa (Ala.) Public Library, for instance, says it paid $12 last fall for an e-book edition of Random House's fantasy novel "A Game of Thrones." Now the price has leapt to $105, according to Director of Collection Development Amy Patton ? a 700 percent increase. (Random House declined to say how much libraries pay for individual titles.)

With so much uncertainty, libraries nationwide are thinking twice about building electronic collections. Thirty-nine percent of America's 9,225 public libraries have no digital lending program, according to a 2011 survey from the Chief Officers of State Library Agencies. Many would like to add more e-books, librarians say, but they're waiting to see if publishers back down.

"With so many question marks lingering over the digital world, you have libraries who won't fully embrace [e-books] because they don't know what the impact of that decision is going to be," says Lisa Rice, president-elect of the Kentucky Library Association.

Seeping Arctic methane has serious implications for Florida coastline

ScienceDaily (June 18, 2012) ? The ancient reserves of methane gas seeping from the melting Arctic ice cap told Jeff Chanton and fellow researchers what they already knew: As the permafrost thaws, there is a release of methane, a powerful greenhouse gas that causes climate warming.

The trick was figuring out how much, said Chanton, the John W. Winchester Professor of Oceanography at Florida State University.

The four-member team -- whose findings were published in the journal Nature Geoscience -- documented a large number of gas seep sites in the Arctic where permafrost is thawing and glaciers receding (they found 77 previously undocumented seep sites, comprising 150,000 vents to the atmosphere). Until recently, the cryosphere (frozen soil and ice) has served to plug or block these vents. But thawing conditions have allowed the conduits to open, and deep geologic methane now escapes.

The team studied the link between natural gas seepage and the melting ice cap, using aerial photos and field data to figure out the number -- and location -- of seep holes.

So, here's the rub: The more the ice cap melts, the more methane is released into the atmosphere -- and the more the climate warms.

Why should this matter to you?

People who live in coastal areas could be directly affected, said Chanton, who analyzed the methane and dated it to more than 40,000 years old.

All this seeping methane causes more melting ice, Chanton said, which causes sea levels to rise and could affect coastal real estate values -- sooner rather than later.

How soon?

Possibly over the next 50 to 100 years, Chanton said.

"Methane is a very strong greenhouse gas that's grown three times faster than carbon dioxide since the industrial era," Chanton said. "As the Arctic warms, the ice caps melt and the fissures open, so methane escapes and causes more warming."

This phenomenon causes sea levels to rise, which is particularly problematic in Florida: "Along the flat Florida coastline, a 1-foot rise in sea level could cause anywhere from 10 to 100 feet of shoreline retreat -- erosion," Chanton said. "For us here in Florida, this is really important because we can expect the coast to recede."

That beach house, he warned, might be in peril: "It may not be there for your grandchildren."

Euro crisis far from over, stock analysts warn

(AP) ? A slim victory for pro-Europe parties Sunday in an election in Greece should relax fears that a country will leave the euro for the first time and unleash global financial turmoil.

But when it comes to Greek politics ? and European economic policy ? it's never that easy. So the bumpy ride for financial markets isn't over yet.

The conservative New Democracy party, which supports a bailout agreement that would keep Greece in the 17-country euro club, appeared to win enough votes to form a ruling coalition with another pro-bailout party.

The result forestalled what financial analysts had most feared ? a victory for Syriza, a leftist party that objects to the terms of the bailout, speeding Greece toward an exit from the euro and the world economy toward an unpredictable shock.

Dow Jones industrial average futures were up 85 points on Sunday night, suggesting the market could open higher Monday. But the analysts cautioned that any surge is likely to be brief.

Neil MacKinnon, global macro strategist at the investment bank VTB Capital, told his clients that the election result, combined with a Federal Reserve meeting this week at which investors hope for measures to stimulate the U.S. economy, could lift stocks.

MacKinnon cautioned, however, that there are still too many problems in Europe, particularly in Spain, plus evidence that the global economy is cooling, to justify a celebration.

"I think investors should treat any sort of knee-jerk rally with caution," MacKinnon said in an interview.

Investors learned that lesson last week. On June 9, European countries agreed to lend Spain up to $125 billion to save its banks, but the relief lasted only hours, and the Dow Jones industrial average closed down 142 points the next trading day.

Borrowing costs for the Spanish government crept closer to 7 percent, the level economists consider unsustainable, throughout the week. They also inched higher for Italy. Those two countries are the third- and fourth-largest in the euro group.

So when stock and bond markets open around the world on Monday, a Greek doomsday will have been avoided, but there will still be plenty for investors to fret about.

"How long is it going to take for people to worry about Spain again?" wondered Peter Schiff of the brokerage Euro Pacific Capital.

The next two weeks could prove critical if any grand solution to the crisis is to be achieved. The leaders of the world's 20 largest economies gather Monday in Los Cabos, Mexico, for a summit, with Europe sure to be a major point of discussion.

And on June 28 and 29, leaders of the 27 member states of the European Union will hold perhaps the most important meeting since the body was created two decades ago.

"This crisis is not over," said John Silvia, chief economist at Wells Fargo. "The crisis will wax and wane for years. Maybe it will wane for the time being."

For that matter, the problems of Greece itself are far from solved.

The rest of Europe will "lean over backward" to support a coalition led by New Democracy, said Douglas Elliott, a fellow in economic studies at the Brookings Institution.

Greeks overwhelmingly want to stay in the euro and avoid a return to Greece's old currency, the drachma, which would almost certainly sink in value immediately against the euro, eating into the value of savings in Greek banks.

But Greeks remain outraged by the public spending cuts demanded by European neighbors, notably Germany, in exchange for a total of $300 billion in bailout loans. Greek unemployment is almost 22 percent.

Syriza, the anti-bailout party, signaled on Sunday that it wants no part of a coalition government. And while New Democracy and Pasok, another pro-bailout party, have enough seats to form one, it could disintegrate quickly.

Greek politics has become extreme and fractious, MacKinnon said, and it is not clear whether a new administration in Greece could implement the wishes of its lenders, the EU and the International Monetary Fund.

"Basically, all this does is keep the patient on life support, but doesn't resolve the basic problem," he said. "So whatever the reaction in the stock market in the next couple of days, I would say treat with caution."

One market strategist, Paul Christopher of Wells Fargo Advisors, said last week that a Syriza victory could have led to a 15 percent decline in the Standard & Poor's 500 index within weeks.

That is because no one is sure how bad a Greek exit from the euro would be. Greece would almost certainly default on its debt, triggering losses for European banks that own its government bonds.

The worst case envisions a worldwide lending freeze similar to what happened when the investment bank Lehman Brothers went under in September 2008, during the U.S. financial crisis.

That threat has been dodged at least for now. But another investment bank, RBC Capital Markets, warned its clients on Sunday afternoon that Europe still lacks a "grand solution" for its debt crisis, and that "domestic fixes will always disappoint."

Even if Europe finds an answer, investors have to contend with other big problems in the world economy. Job growth in the United States is slowing, and China's white-hot economic growth is cooling.

Central banks of countries around the world have signaled they are ready to step in if the international financial system comes under severe stress or if the world economy gets much worse.

That prospect was enough to trigger a 270-point rally in the Dow on Thursday and Friday. But the sentiment of stock analysts heading coming out of the weekend was still decidedly negative.

"I think investors can only end up being disappointed," MacKinnon said.

Saturday?s Group A shake up cautions us against taking anything for granted, but through the first two rounds of group play, Germany looks like the tournament?s best team. Their defense has only given up one goal, striker Mario G?mez is the competition?s leading scorer, and each of their midfielders has given team of the tournament-type performances. The team seems like too much for anyone to handle, let alone Denmark.

The Danes, however, have already shown they shouldn?t be patronized with phrases like ?let alone Denmark.? They opened the tournament by taking down the Netherlands, a team ranked one spot behind Germany in the world rankings. If they can derail the Dutch, who?s to say they can?t take down the Germans?

Nobody, though the ease with which Germany dispatched the Netherlands on Wednesday shows they?re a much more formidable opponent. And when you think back to last Saturday, when the Germans had to shift gears and adopt a new approach to break through a packed in Portugal, it?s hard to imagine Germany continuously banging it?s head against the wall the way the Dutch did versus Denmark.

The Danes had a great plan for the Dutch, but they may need a couple of different plans on Sunday. Germany?s sure to have more than one trick at their disposal.

The game kicks off at 2:45 p.m. Eastern, as goes Group B?s other game, the Netherlands-Portugal. Germany wins the group with any result and can still get through with a loss in certain scenarios. For Denmark, they?re through with a win. They also advance with a draw, provided the Netherlands beat Portugal.

Here is your playlist.

Side 1: Germany vs. Denmark

1. The right foundation

Niki Zimling looks set to start after leaving in the first half against Portugal. Paired with William Kvist in front of the back four, they?ll be Denmark?s first line of defense against the German midfield: Mesut Ozil, Bastian Schweinsteiger, and Sami Khedira. That trio has been allowed to control each of their first two games. Zimling and Kvist will get the?unenviable?task of holding them at arm?s length.

Outnumbered two against three, Zimling and Kvist will need help. That?s where Christian Eriksen comes in. The 20-year-old Ajax star had been largely invisible this tournament. He started turning up in the second half against Portugal, but he has still failed to meet the expectation that he?d be one of the competition?s breakout stars.

On Sunday, his defensive contributions are going to be as important as his passing. Germany will send one of Schweinsteiger or Khedira forward in the attacking phase. Eriksen needs to track back onto the sitter, else Germany will be lay siege to Denmark.

2. The same every time

Denmark central defenders Daniel Agger and Simon Kjaer were better against Portugal than they were against the Netherlands. Strangely, Denmark gave up three to the Portuguese while keeping a clean sheet against the Dutch.

Goal totals aside, Morten Olsen needs his best effort from his central pair if Denmark can contain Mario G?mez. Germany?s striker has three goals in two games operating exclusively within the width of the 18-yard box, where Agger and Kjaer are expected to neutralize the opposition. Between Thomas M?ller?s crossing and ?zil?s creativity in the middle, G?mez?s going to get plenty of service.

source: Denmark needs the pair that faced Portugal to show up on Sunday. If they get beaten as many times as they were by the Dutch, Germany will win.

3. A little more ruthless

You don?t want to look six points in the mouth, but there has been a bit of a fade at the end of each of Germany?s games. Portugal pushed hard for a goal at the end of the opener, while Mats Hummels let Robin van Persie bring the Netherlands back into the second game. With so many Bayern Munich players in Germany?s starting XI (seven), it?s tempting to wonder if the same attitude that allowed Chelsea to comeback in the Champions League final has carried over into the national team. It?s far too early to tell, but the symptomatology?s there.

If Germany takes another lead, it would be nice to see them be a little more ruthless. Go and get that extra goal, and once it?s yours, don?t be so willing to let the other guy decide how the rest of the match plays out.

4. New toys in my house

If Germany can build a safe lead, it?d be nice to see some of the young stars collecting dust on the bench get a run out. Mario Goetze and Marco Reus are part of the next wave reinforcing the national team, but they?ve also been injured for much of 2012. It?d be nice to get them some time. Twenty-one-year-old Andr? Schurrle has seven goals in 14 caps, while Borussia Dortmund?s Ilkay Gundogan?s providing yet another midfield option.

Germany has too many players for so little time. It?d be nice to see a few.

In Iraq, car bomb kills 10 on Shiite pilgrimage

(AP) ? Iraqi police say a car bomb has hit a major Shiite pilgrimage, killing 10 people on the last day of the commemorations for a revered imam.

The bombing comes days after a wave of 22 coordinated explosions earlier this week killed 72 pilgrims in what was among the worst attacks in Iraq since American troops withdrew six months ago.

(AP) ? Faced with a choice between Hosni Mubarak's ex-prime minister and an Islamist candidate, Egyptians entered their latest round of elections in an atmosphere of suspicion, resignation and worry, voting in a presidential runoff that will mean the difference between installing a remnant of the old regime and bringing more Islam into government.

The race between Ahmed Shafiq, a career air force officer like Mubarak, and the Muslim Brotherhood's Mohammed Morsi, a U.S.-trained engineer, has deeply divided the country, 16 months after a stunning uprising by millions forced the authoritarian Mubarak to step down after 29 years in office.

The two-day vote is taking place under the shadow of political dramas over the past week that effectively mean the military generals who took power after Mubarak's ouster will continue to rule despite promises to hand over authority to the elected president by July 1. The generals took over legislative powers after Egypt's highest court on Thursday ordered the dissolution of the parliament elected just six months ago, and the military made a de facto declaration of martial law.

Using diplomatic language to convey Washington's concern about the latest development in longtime ally Egypt, U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta underlined to Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, Egypt's military ruler, "the need to ensure a full and peaceful transition to democracy."

In their phone call Friday, Tantawi, who was Mubarak's defense minister of 20 years, confirmed the military's intention to transfer power to a democratically elected government by July 1, according to the U.S. Defense Department.

On Saturday, few voters showed the sense of celebration visible in previous votes. The prevailing mood was one of deep anxiety over the future ? whether bitterness that their "revolution" had stalled, fears that whoever wins protests will erupt, or deep suspicion that the political system was being manipulated. Moreover, there was a sense of voting fatigue. Egyptians have gone to the polls multiple times since Mubarak's fall on Feb. 11, 2011 ? a referendum early last year, then three months of multi-round parliamentary elections that began in November, and the first round of presidential elections last month.

"People are depressed, no one is happy after we returned to square one," Abu Bakr Said, a lawyer and a Morsi supporter, said referring to Thursday's court ruling, which wiped out the only elected body in the country.

"We have no confidence now in any election and I know that a second revolution is coming," he said as he waited in line outside a Cairo polling center.

Some said they were voting against a candidate as much as for a favorite. Anti-Shafiq voters said they wanted to stop a figure they fear will perpetuate Mubarak's regime; anti-Morsi voters feared he would hand the country over to Brotherhood domination to turn it into an Islamic state. With the fear of new authoritarianism in the future, some said they were choosing whoever they believed would be easiest to eventually force out.

Outside a polling center at the Cairo suburb of Shubra el-Kheima, Sameh Mohammed, declared: "I am not voting for either. They are all thieves and liars and cooperating with the military." Mohammed, who now washes cars after the factory where he worked closed following the revolution, lashed out at the military, but said he doesn't trust the Brotherhood either.

"They are all gambling with our lives," he said.

Unlike in ealier post-Mubarak votes when Egyptians were confident the balloting would be free, many this time said they expected tampering.

"I don't think Shafiq 'could' win, I think he will win," said Nagwan Gamal, a 26-year-old engineering lecturer at Cairo University who was voting for Morsi.

"I think there will be corruption to ensure that he wins, though I think a lot of people will vote for him," she said at a polling center in the Cairo district of Manial.

There were no immediate reports of significant violations at the polls, which are being monitored by several international and local observer groups. But the suspicion expressed by many underscored a widespread belief that the ruling military wants to ensure a win by the president of its choosing. The military has said it does not back either candidate.

Announcements by Interior Minister Mohammed Ibrahim, in charge of police, only heightened the sense of paranoia and uncertainty. He told reporters that security agencies learned of a plot to carry out attacks on "vital installations" by individuals disguised as police or military. He also said that pens with ink that disappears after 30 minutes were being distributed to voters outside polling stations to use in marking their ballots. He didn't elaborate on who was passing them out or why.

The "pen" rumor spread quickly. At a polling center in the Cairo district of Shubra el-Kheima, the judge monitoring the ballots said the report was fake but that many in line now feared their vote would vanish. One woman wanted to take her ballot outside to wait to ensure her checkmark didn't disappear, said the judge, Mohammed el-Minshawi.

"I am hitting the ceiling. This is a dirty election game that aims to make people lose trust in the process," he said.

There were scuffles between supporters of the two candidates in the provinces of Assiut and Menoufia and as a handful of cases when the names of people who died were still on voters' lists and police and army conscripts voted in violation of a ban on service members from doing so. Three were wounded in exchange of fire in Gharbiya province

Shafiq, a self-confessed admirer and a longtime friend of Mubarak, has campaigned on a platform of a return to stability, something that resonated with many Egyptians frustrated and fatigued by more than a year of turmoil ? from deadly street protests, a surge in crime, to a faltering economy and seemingly endless strikes, sit-ins and demonstrations.

In contrast, Morsi marketed himself as a revolutionary who is fighting against the return of the old regime, promising guaranteed freedoms and an economic recovery, while softening his Islamist rhetoric in a bid to reassure liberals, minority Christians and women.

But multiple factors were playing on voters' minds. Some were angry at the Brotherhood, which was the big winner in the parliament elections, gaining nearly half the seats, but then faced a backlash from many who feel it then tried to monopolize authority for itself. After the past week's court ruling, others were angered by what they saw as the military's power grab.

"The revolution was stolen from us," merchant Nabil Abdel-Fatah said as he waited in line outside a polling center in Cairo's working-class district of Imbaba. He said he planned to vote for Shafiq. "We can easily get rid of him if we want to, but not the Brotherhood, which will cling to power."

Brotherhood supporter Amin Sayed said he had planned to boycott the vote, but changed his mind after the court ruling.

"I came to vote for the Brotherhood and the revolution and to spite the military council," he said in Imbaba, a stronghold of Islamists. "If Shafiq wins, we will return to the streets."

The balloting will produce Egypt's first president since the ouster of Mubarak, now serving a life sentence for failing to prevent the killing of some 900 protesters during the 18-day uprising that toppled his regime.

The winner will be only the fifth president since the monarchy was overthrown nearly 60 years ago.

The election is supposed to be the last stop in a turbulent transition overseen by the military generals. But even if they nominally hand over some powers to the winner, they will still hold the upper hand over the next president. The generals are likely to issue an interim constitutional declaration defining the president's powers, they will hold legislative powers, and they will likely appoint an assembly to write the permanent constitution.

Also last week, the military-appointed government gave military police and intelligence agents the right to arrest civilians for a host of suspected crimes. Many saw the move as a de facto declaration of martial law.

"By disbanding parliament, we returned to square one. We wasted a year and a half," 30-year-old contractor Mohammed Kamel said in the impoverished Cairo district of Warraq. "Ahead of us are four years of ambiguity ... We knew that the military council will never hand power because the generals have privileges they want to protect."

Kamel said he cast a purposely spoiled vote in protest, crossing out the names of both Morsi and Shafiq on his ballot.

Already, the generals have been blamed for mismanaging the transition and they stand accused of killing protesters, torturing detainees and hauling at least 12,000 civilians before military courts since January last year.

School teacher Mohammed Mustafa said he was voting to try to stop the return of the old regime.

"We lost this country for 30 years, and we are not ready to lose it again," he added. "I have no doubt there will be fraud. If there is, I will return to the street to win back my dignity because I won't live as a slave anymore."
