Idapt Universal Charger i4

Desk clutter, tangled cables, and piled up power bricks are a foregone conclusion for most tech enthusiasts. The Idapt Universal Charger i4 ($59.99 direct) aims to help the slovenly connected sluggards of the world with a modular dock that puts all your power needs into a single box. The attractively designed base station can charge up to four of your devices simultaneously, occupies just one wall outlet, and has a modular design that allows the dock to adapt to your ever-growing collection of gadgets and gizmos. It's a bit expensive and doesn't sync any devices, but the i4 is a well-built and future proof dock that can streamline your charging needs. ??

inline

The Idapt Universal Charger i4 resembles an upside-down topless pyramid, measuring 1.26 by 6.65 by 5.31 inches (HWD) and 10.6 ounces. It's made entirely of plastic, but feels sturdy and well built, with small rubber feet on the bottom to keep it from sliding around. The top is covered with a glossy plastic (in either black or white) with a Power button and three openings for the modular charging-tip pods. Each opening also has two Eject buttons and a power indicator LED that glows red for charging or green for standby. On the right side is a lone USB port, and there's a detachable power cable that extends from the back of the dock. The modular pods are grey plastic?the iPhone/iPod tip was able to dock my iPhone 4S with a bumper case still on. Six charging tips are included, but the only useful ones are the iPhone/iPod, micro USB, and mini USB (also included are somewhat-outdated Nokia, Sony Ericsson, and Samsung tips.) You can also opt for a customized four-tip starter pack for an additional $2.63, or add individual tips for $9.99 each. Idapt makes over 20 different charging tips that it claims can power 4,500 different devices. Tips range from standards like microUSB and Apple's 30-pin connector to Ninendo DS and even AA and AAA battery chargers.?

The whole package works exactly as advertised, charging up to four devices simultaneously. I tested with the aforementioned iPhone 4S, an Apple iPad 2, and various Android smartphones and tablets. The smartphones all docked easily, though the pods felt a bit loose under some of the heavier and taller devices. Docking tablets on top was out of the question; instead you must use the USB port along the side. The pod spacing could be an issue for some, as the back two are too close for multiple devices that charge horizontally.

If you find yourself constantly struggling with tangled or misplaced cables and overflowing power outlets, the i4 could be a helpful addition to your gadget arsenal. It features a sturdy and attractive design, with a lot of options for charging all your gear and even rechargeable batteries. My biggest complaint is that, at $60, I wish the i4 also had the ability to sync some devices. However, the i4 does have the added value of adaptability, with its swappable charging tips, meaning it likely won't become obsolete after your next big gadget purchase.

So What's The Point Of Doing All Those ... - Frogs Web Hosting

As your web site name is the name and address by which you are known online, it?s the root of your internet identity. First we'll have a look at the correct way to select the right site name for your business from diverse corporations who offer website name registration in Great Britain. So it's vital to create the right website name for your business. Your web site name must be unique. When you go onto any domain registration internet site, it might prompt you with a range of similar possible web domain registration options. If you want to make your own web site, you want to invent a name you wish your internet site to be known as. This name then should be registered with a domain registration company to make sure that it is unique and you become the legal owner of that website name.

You also have to pick a domain extension to attribute to your web site name. For instance if you're a UK business and are only selling to England, it'd be best to select a.co.uk domain extension ? particularly for achieving good UK search engine listings. It is crucial that before registering a site name with a domain registrar that you check that they're a convincing domain registration company. When registering a personal domain you want essentially 3 things : one. Have more liberty for your contents. Own and manage your domain and have it online! Offshore domain registrars are known to supply better privacy protection and most of them don't even collect their customers ? delicate details like the telephone number, address, for example. Once that process is ended, you146,ll have your domain safely residing on your host146,s servers and your internet site ( so long as it146,s been built ) will be prepared to go. Their offshore jurisdictions imply more liberty of contents for your domain and the internet site. Obviously the most significant part of this process is the registration of the site name and this ought to be done promptly, regardless of if it will be years before you146,re prepared to get the site successfully running.

The web domain registration and transfer for your business site is a straightforward process and can be finished thru automated online systems in most situations. Brand or brand recall is the second critical thing that you must consider. To a degree, this info provides legitimacy to the business and the individual owning the business. With your own name being the very first thing your customer will have a look for, you should ensure that they're going to have no problem getting to you. With your own net domain registration, this isn't a difficulty but if you'll have one of those free websites, there isn't any possibility that your customer will even remember the name of your website. So what's the point of doing all those advertising when they can not even remember you? And even from the beginning you have got to consider that you don't have control over your internet site unless you have got your net domain registration.

Facebook struggles as lawsuits loom

The stock climbed a dollar on Wednesday, but it is still 16 percent below its IPO price last Friday.

The pre-market price for Facebook stock is shown, Wednesday, May 23, at the Nasdaq MarketSite in New York. Facebook stock rose in early trading Wednesday, although still far below the $38 it was priced at before its initial public offering (IPO) Friday.

Facebook?Inc.'s stock climbed $1, or 3.2 percent, to close at $32 on Wednesday.

The gain was only a small reprieve for shareholders. The stock's rocky inaugural trading day Friday was followed by a two-day decline. The stock is still trading nearly 16 percent below its $38 IPO price.

The IPO was tarnished Friday morning by a half-hour delay in the trading of?Facebook's?stock, caused by glitches on the Nasdaq Stock Market. It was marred further this week as investors began accusing the banks that arranged the IPO of sharing important information about?Facebook's?business prospects with a select group of clients.

Several shareholders who bought stock in the IPO have filed lawsuits against?Facebook, its executives and Morgan Stanley, the IPO's lead underwriter. At question is whether analysts at the big underwriter investment banks cut their second-quarter and full-year forecasts for?Facebook?just before the IPO, and told only a handful of clients about it.

One suit, filed in U.S. District Court in New York, claims?Facebook's?IPO documents contained untrue statements and omitted important facts, such as a "severe reduction in revenue growth" that?Facebook?was experiencing at the time of the offering. The suit's three plaintiffs, who bought?Facebook?stock on its first day of trading May 18, claim they were damaged in the process.

Morgan Stanley declined to comment.?Facebook?said the lawsuit is without merit.

Another lawsuit, filed in San Mateo County Superior Court in California, holds?Facebook?and underwriters liable, claiming that?Facebook's?IPO documents misled investors. Both suits seek class action status on behalf of investors who bought?Facebook?stock on Friday and lost money.

"No one gets it perfect, as far as saying what the financial results are," said Anthony Michael Sabino, professor at John's University's Peter J. Tobin College of Business. The bottom line, he added, is whether?Facebook?or the underwriter had material information about?Facebook's?finances that was not disclosed publicly.

"At this moment, it's still too early to say," he said. "We don't know enough, but this could turn out to be an issue."

Adding to the day's events,?Facebook?was in talks with the New York Stock Exchange to move its stock from the Nasdaq Stock Market after the botched offering, according to a person familiar with the matter.

The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly. The news of the talks was first reported by Reuters.

NYSE spokesman Rich Adamonis said: "There have been no discussions with?Facebook?regarding switching their listing in light of the events of the last week, nor do we think a discussion along those lines would be appropriate at this time."

A Nasdaq spokesman declined to comment.

'Impossible' material would stretch when compressed

Imagine cushions that lift up instead of sinking when you sit on them. Impossible? Not according to a blueprint for new materials with "negative compressibility": the materials compress when they are pulled and expand when they are pushed.

Metamaterials that do this have been built before. For example, vibrating aluminium bars with tiny cavities inside them create waves that oppose the push or pull applied (Nature Materials, DOI: 10.1038/nmat1644). But the designs must be vibrated at just the right frequency to see the effect.

Zachary Nicolaou and Adilson Motter of Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, have now designed a metamaterial that stretches when compressed, and vice versa, under any circumstances.

"What is interesting is that they study systems that are not responding to a vibration but to a steady applied force," says John Pendry of Imperial College London.

That should be impossible, as any material that behaves this way (stretching when compressed, and vice versa) would be inherently unstable and instantly collapse into a stable state without displaying such behaviour. Nicolaou and Motter got around this by designing a material with an internal structure that does transition to a stable state, but a state that is more compressed or expanded than the original state.

Their theoretical design involves a row of four "particles" ? each made of groups of molecules ? that attract each other to varying degrees. The force attracting the two inner particles is weak, so that pulling on the material breaks that bond. "As soon as that happens, the outer particles attract each other more," says Motter, so overall the material compresses. If this material is squeezed, though, the two inner particles are brought close enough together to reform the weak bond ? and the material can expand.

Miniaturised versions that work on similar principles could one day be used as protective coatings for military vehicles, says Christopher Smith at the University of Exeter, UK. "If a blast hit the side of your vehicle, it would push back and try to cancel out some of the effect," he says.

Motter says much of the previous work on metamaterials has focused on creating novel electromagnetic properties, such as bending light to create invisibility cloaks. The new study is part of a budding branch of research into "mechanical" metamaterials with unusual responses to stresses and strains.

"We've gone almost as far as we can with high-strength materials," Smith says. "The next phase has to be materials that do completely different things."

The NFLPA recently produced a two-page assessment for players entitled ?The Economic Truth About The New NFL CBA.?

On Monday, in separate letters to all players and NFLPA-certified agents, NFLPA president Domonique Foxworth and outside counsel Jeffrey Kessler went into more detail regarding the gains made by players in the new labor deal.

Foxworth?s letter repeats the same bullet points from the two-page document, along with a fourth entry:? ?Elimination of two-days and reduced hitting in practices have provided an immediate benefit to players.?

Also citing the higher Injury Protection Benefit and improved medical standard, Foxworth writes that ?the new CBA was something that was worth fighting for.?

Kessler?s letter is far more detailed, outlining nine arguments aimed at countering ?anti-player critics? who have made ?grossly inaccurate? claims that ?demonstrate a fundamental misunderstanding? of the current CBA and its predecessor.

His points are accurate, even though some of the issues weren?t ever the subject of serious criticism.? For example, Kessler claims that critics believe the current deal is unfair because it reduced the players? share from ??nearly 60%? to an average of 47% during the course of the deal.?? Though we?re aware of no critics who have made that contention, Kessler?s response is accurate.? The prior percentage was applied after the NFL received $1 billion off the top in cost deductions.? The new percentage is much, much closer to a per-dollar formula.

Kessler also points out that the new CBA has minimum cash spending requirements.? Though he doesn?t mention that the per-team minimum of 89 percent doesn?t apply until 2013, he accurately points out that the league-wide minimum is 99 percent in 2011 and 2012, dropping to 95 percent in future years.

Kessler also touts the increase in guaranteed compensation, addresses the belief in some circles that the 55-percent share that goes to the players on national TV and media deal is nevertheless limited by a 47-percent share on all revenue, defends the rookie wage scale, explains that the NFLPA did not surrender group licensing rights to the NFL, and emphasizes the non-economic benefits of the new CBA (such as limited practices, the new Injury Protection Benefit, and other achievements).

Finally, Kessler tackles the contention from a ?select number of ?journalists?? that ?the new CBA is not much better than the proposal the owners made to the players in March of 2011,? calling that claim ?uninformed and wrong.?? He points out that the proposal offered a fixed cap with no upside, along with dramatically reduced TV revenues as of 2014, and that the March 2011 proposal lacked other key player-friendly terms that appeared in the final deal.

Kessler?s letter represents the first detailed effort to respond to criticism of the CBA, but at no point does he or Foxworth address the comments from owners like Robert Kraft that, under the current labor deal, the salary cap won?t increase significantly for the foreseeable future.? The comparisons by ?journalists? like Daniel Kaplan of SportsBusiness Journal and Greg Bedard of the Boston Globe (and, yes, me) of the final CBA to the March 2011 proposal arose directly from projections and calculations regarding the cap dollars under the final deal in comparison to the guaranteed cap dollars under the March 2011 proposal.? Until the claims from influential owners like Kraft and Bob McNair are addressed, Kessler?s letter can?t be regarded as complete, no matter how thorough it may otherwise appear to be.

Tiny sensor reads palms, secures your laptop

8 hrs.

Laptops and smartphones of the future may read our palms before they allow us to access our personal data, according to ongoing security technology under development in Japan.

The sensor under development by researchers at Fujitsu Laboratories confirms a person?s identity based on the pattern of blood vessels inside their hand.

While the palm-reading technology isn?t new (the company is already rolling out ATMs based on the concept), the sensors are now small enough ??just 16 mm square and 5 mm thick ? to be used in mobile computers.

The palm-reading technology is different than reading skin lines to determine a person?s longevity or love life, or even reading a fingerprint to determine identity.

"Fingerprints give information about the surface of the hand, but they can be hard to use under some conditions,? Takashi Morihara, a researcher at Fujitsu Laboratories, told?video news website Diginfo TV.

?Palm vein ID uses information about the inside of the hand, so it can be used consistently under any conditions."

For now, the sensors are too big to work in smartphones, but pocket-sized gadgets are the goal. For those who worry about leaving their phone at the coffee shop, that could come as good news.

SpaceX blasts off to space station in historic first

Opening a new era in private space flight, the US company SpaceX on Tuesday became the first commercial outfit to launch its own craft toward the International Space Station.

"Three, two, one and launch of the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, as NASA turns to the private sector to resupply the International Space Station," said NASA commentator George Diller, as the spacecraft blasted off at 3:44 am (0744 GMT).

The test flight of the Dragon space capsule, which launched atop SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket, aims to show that commercial industry can restore US access to the ISS after NASA retired its space shuttle fleet last year.

The mission is set to include a fly-by and berthing with the station in the next three days, before the capsule returns to Earth at the end of this month.

Shortly after liftoff, the cargo-carrying spacecraft entered orbit and video images showed mission control staff at SpaceX headquarters in Hawthorne, California jumping from their seats, hugging and clapping.

SpaceX chief executive officer and Internet entrepreneur Elon Musk said watching the rocket rise from the launch pad was an "extremely intense moment."

"Every bit of adrenaline in my body released at that point," he told reporters after the apparently flawless launch, which followed an attempt on Saturday that was scrubbed at the last second when computers detected high pressure in the central engine of the Falcon 9.

SpaceX engineers discovered the root cause was a faulty check valve and repaired it the same day.

No humans are traveling aboard the Dragon, but six astronauts are already at the $100-billion space lab to help the capsule latch on, to unload supplies and then restock the capsule with cargo to take back to Earth.

On May 24, the spacecraft's sensors and flight systems are to undergo a series of tests to see if it is ready to berth, including a complicated fly-under at a distance of about 1.5 miles (2.5 kilometers).

If NASA gives the green light, the Dragon will then approach the ISS on May 25 in an attempt to berth with the station.

The astronauts on board the ISS will maneuver the station's robotic arm to help capture the capsule and attach it to the orbiting research outpost.

The hatch of the Dragon is set to open on May 26 for unloading 521 kilograms (1,148 pounds) of cargo for the space lab and restocking it with a 660-kilogram (1,455-pound) load to return to Earth.

On May 31, the Dragon is to detach from the station and make a safe landing in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of southern California.

California-based SpaceX, owned by billionaire Musk, who also co-founded PayPal, is the first of several US competitors to try sending spacecraft to the ISS with the goal of restoring US access to space for human travelers by 2015.

"We are really at the dawn of a new era of space exploration, one where there is a much bigger role for commercial space companies," Musk said, likening the space effort to the rise of the Internet in the mid 1990s.

"The Internet was created as a government endeavor but then the introduction of commercial companies really accelerated the growth of the Internet and made it accessible to the mainstream," he added.

"I think we are actually at that stage and the success of this mission -- even what we have seen thus far -- I think bodes well for that new stage of space exploration."

The company successfully test-launched its Falcon 9 rocket in June 2010, then made history with its Dragon launch in December of that year, becoming the first commercial outfit to send a spacecraft into orbit and back.

Its reusable Dragon capsule has been built to carry both cargo and up to seven crew members.

NASA administrator Charles Bolden congratulated SpaceX for opening "a new era in exploration."

"We're handing off to the private sector our transportation to the International Space Station so that NASA can focus on what we do best -- exploring even deeper into our solar system, with missions to an asteroid and Mars on the horizon."

Until now, only the space agencies of Russia, Japan and Europe have been able to send supply ships to the ISS.

The three-decade US shuttle program, which ferried astronauts and cargo to the research outpost, ended for good in 2011, leaving Russia as the sole taxi to the ISS until private industry comes up with a replacement.

SpaceX and a handful of other companies are being helped in their endeavors with seed money from NASA to build cargo and crew capability.

JoryPepper Communications ? Web 2.0 Collaboration Tools For ...

Web 2.0 has revolutionized the education world and brought the world closer. Web 2.0 site allows its users to interact with other users or to change website content, in contrast to non-interactive websites where users are limited to the passive viewing of information that is provided to them

Today, teachers are using the Web 2.0 tools to introduce lessons in their classroom. Students are collaborating with other students around the world, creating online content and displaying their work to a global world. Web 2.0 facilitates professional collaboration, networking, critical thinking, collaboration, innovation, creativity, global understanding and multicultural learning. Various tools for collaborative writing and editing, private communication, online conferencing, file sharing, and desktop sharing enable teachers to effectively collaborate with the students beyond school hours thus making optimum use of the technology available.

Google Docs: Google Docs is a free service provided by Google to its users. It serves as an excellent application for collaboration where teachers and students can use it to share documents, spreadsheets and presentations. Professionals can too collaborate with their teams and clients in real-time. Another idea is to use Google Docs as a note-taking tool while in class and lectures.

Skype: Skype is an application that allows making voice calls over the Internet (the technology is called Voice over Internet Protocol ? or VoIP) that is completely free of cost. Apart from VoIP, Skype also offers in-built features for instant messaging (IM), video conferencing, and file sharing. Skype also launched Skype in the Classroom, a dedicated teacher network. Using the platform, teachers can create profiles that describe their classes and teaching interests. They can also search a directory of teachers from all over the world by student age range, language and subject.

Mind Mapping Tool: A mind map is a visual tool that helps build up around a central idea by creating branches like a tree whereby each branch symbolizes a thought process of an individual using different words. A mind map provides a pictorial image of your thoughts and hence helps to assimilate them. This is especially very useful for teachers and students whereby teachers can use mind maps to evaluate students? logical bent of mind, creativity and their thought process. For students it serves as a tool to graphically put their thoughts together. Bubbl.us, for example is a simple free online application that allows brainstorming easily by creating a mind map for any topic.

Wridea: Wridea is a brainstorming tool that enables one to collaborate and share ideas with colleagues, students, and fellow learners and organize and categorize ideas onto different pages, providing unlimited storage, and also allowing users to comment on topics and ideas. Features of Wridea are:

Diigo: Diigo is a social bookmarking site that can be used by researchers to mark and highlight pages on the World Wide Web. The can even add footnote remarks, make notes or add comments to these pages and access them later from any computer . ?Diigo? is an abbreviation for ?Digest of Internet Information, Groups and Other stuff?.

Audio Pal: This is a free site to create audio files where voice can be recorded by phone or microphone and uploaded as an audio file. It can also create audio from text to speech.

Gliffy: Gliffy is an online diagram software for creating professional-quality flowcharts, diagrams, floor plans, technical drawings, and more. The online diagram editor makes it easier than ever to create great looking drawings. The power of graphics organizers has been verified by research in promoting strong thinking skills and comprehension for all ages. It is a free online tool for creating graphic organizers without purchasing any software. Teachers and students can create the organizers or the class can create them together, such as in a brainstorming session on any topic.

Blogs: The core tool that often gets overlooked because it?s not as glitzy and tends to be viewed as a little older.

Social Networks: Social networks do blogs one better by making the conversation between users instantaneous. That on-the-spot feedback makes social networking more suited for educators to connect and share resources with contacts outside their classroom or institution.

Synchronous live platforms: Tools like WebEx and Adobe Connect, can be referred to as live meetings, web meetings, or webinars. Whatever you choose to call them, they provide a virtual venue for online collaborative experiences that play out in real time?similar to a virtual classroom or meeting room.

SlideRocket: SlideRocket has all of the capabilities of presentation software such as PowerPoint or Keynote, but exists on the web, which gives it a great advantage in the education setting. Teachers can create multimedia presentations that supplement their lessons, share the presentation with their students via a hyperlink, and then track which students viewed the presentation as well as how long they spent looking at each slide.

SchoolFusion: A website development and hosting solution, SchoolFusion is designed for K-12 schools to use templates to build ?fusion pages,? or websites, for individual classrooms, student clubs, academic and administrative departments, or other community, alumni, and faculty functions that may call for one. Web 2.0 tools are woven into SchoolFusion?s web pages, giving teachers instant access to collaborative instruments such as wikis, blogs, messaging, podcasts, and streaming video.

Smilebox: The Smilebox Teacher?s Toolbox program is a teacher?s digital companion for creative classroom communication. Teacher?s Toolbox gives teachers at all grade levels an easy and creative way to safely share photos, videos, and classroom updates to students and parents.

Edu 2.0. EDU 2.0 is a lot like online course management systems Blackboard and Moodle, but with a couple of distinct advantages. First, teachers can share their lesson plans, quizzes, videos, experiments and other resources in a shared library that currently hosts more than 15,000 pieces of content. Second, a community section allows teachers and students to network and collaborate with other members who share the same educational interests. And third, everything is hosted in the cloud for free.

SymbalooEDU. he new EDU version comes with academic subject-specific resource pages or ?webmixes? and top tools like TeacherTube, Slideshare, Google Docs, Flickr and more are fully embeddable. Teachers with a ?Free Plus? account can add their school logo and customize the links. The site also allows students to easily share their Symbaloo pages and projects with classmates.

Collaborize Classroom. This app gives teachers four discussion format choices. Students can either agree or disagree with a statement, answer a multiple choice question, post responses, or have the choice between adding a new response or voting for someone else?s response. Teachers can add photos or videos to their prompts and all of the discussions take place on one class page.

Edublogs. This WordPress-like blogging platform only supports educational content. Since 2005, it has hosted more than a million blogs from students and teachers. Common uses for blogs in classrooms include group projects, reflection journals, school newspapers, class web pages and parent newsletters.

Kidblog. Kidblog is a bit more specific than Edublogs. There are fewer options to adjust the appearance of the main page, and it?s hard to use the platform for anything other than as a system for managing individual class blogs. The homepage serves as a catalog of student blogs on the right with a recent post feed on the left. Having said that, if you want to introduce individual class blogs to your K-8 classroom, this is the perfect tool for it.

Edmodo. Edmodo looks and functions much like Facebook. But unlike Facebook, it?s a controlled environment that teachers can effectively leverage to encourage class engagement. The platform allows teachers and students to share ideas, files and assignments on a communal wall. Teachers can organize different groups of students and monitor them from the same dashboard. Once they?ve organized classes, they can post assignments to the wall and grade them online. They can then archive the class groups and begin new ones.

By using the above tools, the teaching learning process can be made interesting enabling both the teachers and students to collaborate, work and share together. Indeed Web 2.0 has revolutionized the education world and brought the world closer.

The tuberculosis vaccine is often used as a treatment for bladder cancer, and adding vitamin D might improve the vaccine's effectiveness, according to new research from the University of Rochester Medical Center presented today at the American Urological Association annual meeting.

Yi-Fen Lee, Ph.D., associate professor of Urology at URMC, has conducted a pre-clinical study in a mouse model showing that a combination of vitamin D therapy and the Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) vaccine greatly improves bladder cancer survival. The next phase, an early clinical trial in patients, will begin soon as part of a collaborative research project between the URMC's James P. Wilmot Cancer Center and the Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo.

The connection between vitamin D and tuberculosis was established long ago, when ancient societies sent people with TB into the sunlight for therapy. Increasing vitamin D levels is known to wake up cells and trigger an immune response whenever infection or inflammation is present.

Also well established is the use of the TB vaccine to treat several forms of bladder cancer. The vaccine works by pushing the body's immune system to fight the cancer cells. However, approximately 30 to 40 percent of people with bladder cancer who receive the vaccine do not respond to it.

Lee is investigating whether a lack of vitamin D in these patients might explain the poor response.

Prior studies have shown that BCG, the modified bacteria that causes TB, turns on a toll-like receptor signal that makes more vitamin D receptors and induces a key enzyme that converts to the most potent, bioactive form of vitamin D, or 1,25-hydroxylvitamin D3. So Lee thought it was likely that boosting the levels of vitamin D in the body would activate this process, enhancing the vaccine.

The mouse study involved four arms: a control group, a group that received vitamin D treatment alone, a group that received BCG treatment alone, and a fourth group that received the combination of vitamin D and the BCG vaccine. The latter (combination therapy) group was the only group in which 100 percent survived bladder cancer, Lee said.

"Vitamin D appears to be critical to the success of BCG immunotherapy," Lee said, although she does not advise taking high doses of vitamin D unless under medical supervision. "Just as importantly, though, we have shown the migration and signaling involved in establishing vitamin D as a biomarker that can be easily measured."

The Elsa U. Pardee Foundation funded Lee's research. An estimated 73,500 new cases of bladder cancer will be diagnosed in the United States in 2012, and more than 14,000 deaths are likely to occur. Cigarette smoking is implicated in about half of all cases of bladder cancer in men and women.

Dale Chihuly's 'Glass House' shines in Seattle

(Reuters) - Pioneering glass artist Dale Chihuly, whose work has been shown in over 200 museums worldwide, will be honored in his home city Seattle when "Chihuly Garden and Glass" opens on Monday, offering the most comprehensive collection of his work ever.

Spanning one and a half acres in the shadow of the Space Needle, the show includes an exhibition hall, a garden and a "Glass House" structure by Chihuly, inspired by his two favorite buildings, Paris' Sainte-Chapelle and London's Crystal Palace.

"It's really the most important project I've ever done," Chihuly told Reuters about the exhibition he designed.

Inside "Glass House," visitors encounter a suspended sculpture 100-feet long, hovering overhead like an alien serpent. Composed of 1340 individual plates of red, orange, amber and yellow, it is one of Chihuly's largest installations.

"You look through it and you see the Space Needle behind it," he smiled. "Sunset, sunrise - and it's all in yellow, oranges and red."

In the garden just outside "Glass House" stands "Seattle Sun," a yellow and orange orb of countless curls and baubles spanning 16 ft. in diameter.

An exhibition hall houses eight galleries outlining the various phases of Chihuly's career, including his landmark work, "Glass Forest," as well as a "Sealife" room that gives the artist pause to remember how it was created in his mind.

"One piece I like a lot is the boat piece," said Chihuly about a rowboat in the room that is filled with ornaments of various shapes and colors. The idea for the piece came to him on a trip to Finland when he stood on a bridge and dropped glass baubles into a river to see if they would break.

"There were some teenagers there with their rowboats and I asked them if they'd go down river and pick ?em up," he recalled. "When they came back with their boats full of glass, that's when the idea came to me about exhibiting a boat full of glass. In fact, of the two boats in the exhibition, one of them is from Finland."

Also in the hall is a gallery dedicated to chandeliers including sculptures derived from his landmark 1996 installation, "Chihuly Over Venice," composed of 14 pieces suspended in piazzas and intersections throughout the city.

The exhibition's executive director, Michelle, Bufano sand "Chihuly over Venice" marks a turning point for Chihuly's work when he turned more toward more architecture, more engineering and "finding ways to make his vision come true."

LEADING TEAMS, THINKING BIG

Venice is where Chihuly began his career, studying there on a Fulbright Scholarship in 1968. Within the ancient Italian city's glass-blowing industry, he learned the Venetian tradition of teamwork, In the U.S., glass blowers more often worked alone.

Leading a team enabled Chihuly to think big, expanding the medium in both definition and scale. And when injured in the middle of his career, it gave him tools he needed to continue realizing his vision and creating masterful work even if he wasn't blowing the glass himself.

"He was able to bring so many artists together to stir the medium and to push it," said Bufano. "He pioneered all of that, and you get a sense of that in the exhibition."

Co-founder of the Pilchuck Glass School in Washington State, Chihuly spearheaded the development of glass as a fine art. He has been honored with two fellowships from the National Endowment of the Arts and 10 honorary doctorates.

In 1976, the artist was thrown through a car's windshield in an auto accident, costing him the use of his left eye.

"I recuperated after a couple of months," he recalled. "I went ahead and started blowing glass again but it never felt very good, no peripheral vision and no depth perception."

Then, a shoulder injury three years later left him unable to hold a glass pipe.

"Then I really couldn't blow glass," he said. "The young glass blower that was working with me at the time, I said, ?Boy, you're going to have to take over here for awhile.' And he did and I never went back to it after that."

Since that time, Chihuly relies primarily on drawings to show his team what to do. At age 70, he still keeps a busy schedule preparing a show for the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in October and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts in 2013.

But for now, he is looking forward to the opening of "Chihuly Garden and Glass."

"It makes me very proud to make my own retrospective," he beamed. "Showing work inside and outside, work in a glass house - it's really a perfect combination of different parts of my career."

Mulch: The Benefits Of Garden Mulch

Video Synopsis on mulch is brought to you by: Cherry A.

mulch delivery in south jersey

mulch

Join me as we learn from an Ontario farmer how we can enjoy a gorgeous garden and at the same time, be environmentally responsible.? We?re at Frisia Floral Greenhouse in Ontario with Sietse Elsinga.

He is the owner of these beautiful greenhouses and he is also an instructor with the Environmental Farm Plant in Ontario.

Mark:? What do you like to mulch with outdoors?

Sietse:? Basically, I like bark mulch that I use outside.? You probably know it

Mark:? I like the finely ground up pine and cedar mulch and I like softwoods best of all.? They are the ones that are generally available anyhow.? But, what I try and steer consumers away from are the big chunks of bark.? They don?t really insulate the soil very well in my experience.

Sietse:? You are correct.? They gotta wathc out for not putting too much mulch on as you are probably well aware of.

Mark:? And the reason for that is?

Sietse:? Tie up nitrogen so it?s not available for your plants and your plants might start looking very yellow.

Mark:? Yeah, you get some yellowing leaves and you?ve used a lot of mulch and it maybe time to just put a little nitrogen in the soil to feed and boost them. But, other than that, the benefits of mulching are what?

Sietse:? Keeping weeds down and keeping the moisture into the soil and

Mark:? So if you retain moisture in the soil, then theory goes, the plants will require less water

Sietse:? Yes, that?s correct

Since moving to the country, I?ve learned a lot from Ontario farmers and their approach to stewardship.? Farmers have the opportunity to enhance their environmental knowledge through the Environmental Farm Plan, a voluntary educational program.? Through the EFP process, farmers highlight environmental strengths on their farm, identify potential areas of environmental concerns and set realistic goals and timetables for improvement.
