Rugby Union: Youngs calls on England heroes

ABOVE: Scrum-half Ben Youngs says England are the fittest

England have not lost to France at ?Twickenham since 2007

17th February 2013

By Gary Fitzgerald

ENGLAND must turn themselves into world rugby?s Supermen ? if they want to dominate again.

That?s the claim from scrum-half Ben Youngs, who insists he and his team-mates simply have to become the ?fittest team? on the Union planet.

Leicester star Youngs also admits that ?facing France on Saturday scares him, even though England have smashed the Scots and Irish already in this Six Nations and are on course for Grand Slam glory.

Coaches Stuart Lancaster, Andy ?Farrell and Graham Rowntree are hell-bent on an ultra-strict work ethic and Youngs insists England?s players have never been in better shape. But he knows they can be even fitter.

He said: ?We?re certainly fitter than we were a year ago. The South Africa tour was a wake-up call in a sense, in terms of being able to generate intensity.

?If we want to play at the intensity we ?produced against New Zealand and Scotland, we have to have the levels of fitness to deliver in the last minutes as well as the first.

?We need to play a high-tempo game when conditions permit and to do that you have to be very fit.

?Our conditioning is first-class in this set-up. There?s also a peer pressure that ?ensures you never fall off the radar.

?We have to take responsibility for our own levels while keeping that peer pressure on colleagues to ensure nobody falls behind.

?Stuart told us 12 months ago that if we want to play this style as the norm, then we have to become the fittest Test squad in the world.?

England have not lost to France at ?Twickenham since 2007 with the two ?countries sharing the spoils in their four ?recent meetings.

But Leicester ace Youngs knows too well just how unpredictable the French can be ? and that despite losing their opening two games, they will be dangerous opponents.

He said: ?The bottom line for me is that playing France is scary. When you face their players in Heineken Cup ties, you learn fast that French players can make you look ?foolish if you take your eye off the ball.

?What can we expect? I?m not sure, and that?s why I use the word scary. What I do know is they will try to win the forward ?battle and then try to throw the ball around.

?But our forwards have been outstanding in the opening two games, especially in ?horrendous conditions in Dublin. So I think it?s going to be a very interesting contest ?between the two packs.?

Spy planes check their vision on these parking lot-sized focus charts

When you go to the eye doctor, you look at a chart and tell them what you can see. It's the same way for the cameras on spy planes ? but their charts have to be big enough to see from 20,000 feet.

There are an unknown number of these striking focus charts scattered around the U.S., reports the Center for Land Use Interpretation (CLUI). They have been in use since they were first put together in the 1950s and '60s ? when the development of spy planes like the SR-71 Blackbird and U-2 necessitated careful calibration of their onboard cameras.

The charts differ from one another, but all share some characteristics: large white bars painted at known sizes and distances, sometimes parallel, sometimes perpendicular to each other.

The result is an easy way to tell whether a camera can make out the details it's supposed to from high in the air, or whether adjustment is necessary. Other countries have them as well ? something which attracted the notice of satellite imagery buffs several months ago.

However, the digital cameras in today's drones and planes can be easily adjusted on the fly, making these charts somewhat unnecessary ? but a few are still maintained, possibly for adjusting legacy equipment.

One notable exception is the Curiosity Mars rover, which has one of these bar charts on its body (as well as a penny) for checking the focus of its MAHLI camera.

There are several more examples of these interesting patterns at the CLUI post, as well as a bit more history on the military project and technical details of the charts.

Fitsby Puts Real Money on the Line to Make Sure You and Your Friends Go to the Gym

Fitsby Puts Real Money on the Line to Make Sure You and Your Friends Go to the Gym Android: If you need a little motivation to make it to the gym, you could always think about your health?or, with Fitsby, you can think about the money your friends will wave in your face if you skip out on your workouts. The app lets you wager with friends that you'll work out regularly, and when you do, you earn points?not to mention the money your friends who didn't go put into the pot.

If the app sounds a bit like previously mentioned Gympact, which just launched for Android last week, it should. The principle is the same. Some of you were concerned about putting your money where your workouts were when it came to strangers who might exploit the system, and Fitsby eliminates that problem by connecting you with your friends and letting you all pool your money together for a group challenge.

You can, of course, challenge other users of the app or participate in public challenges if you want, but the app is best when used with a small group of dedicated friends who want to support one another's workout and exercise goals. You still have to check into an approved gym or exercise center for the app to work (the service uses a location's name in Google Places to verify that it's actually a gym, fitness center, or other appropriate location), and if you win, your friends' money will be sent to you via Paypal. For more details on how the app works, check out their FAQ. Fitsby is free, and currently only available for Android. The developers say an iOS version is on the way soon.

Although Anxiety Is Common, It Is Not Necessary - Health Care

In today?s hectic world, many people suffer from a certain level of stress, but it should always be manageable. Stress can make anxiety worse, especially if ignored. Anxiety is a long-term problem that puts the body at risk of damage or even disease thanks to the physical strain it exerts. Read on for more information on ways to deal with anxiety and how you can effectively deal with it.

Even though you?re not able to go on a vacation every week, you should at least take one day off. During your day off, try getting out of the normal routine you have. Go fishing, camping, hiking or whatever else you find relaxing.

Ensure that you take notice of any medical advice given, and ensure they are updated as to your progress. It?s always important to let your doctor know whether the treatment you are receiving is working or not. Since your doctor only sees you occasionally, this communication is the key to successful treatment.

External stimuli causes the majority of anxiety, but some folks do have a genetic predisposition that enables the feeling. If you think you may be genetically inclined to be anxious, it is important to discuss it with your doctor before symptoms arise.

High anxiety levels can cause your breathing to become abnormal. In these situations, focusing entirely on your breathing will enable you to get it back under control. Count in your head while breathing and allow relaxing feelings to come. If you really want to enhance the efforts of deep breathing, find a quite spot and sit there while you breathe.

Think about acupuncture to control anxiety. This is used for many reasons since it relaxes your entire body. And, if it is for a medical reason, some insurance companies may even cover some visits to an acupuncturist.

Exercise consistently if you suffer from anxiety. Exercise is nature?s stress buster and can relieve symptoms of anxiety. If exercise is an option for you, target a half hour of aerobic exercise each day or every other day.

If you are among the millions of others suffering with chronic anxiety, consider a helpful talk with a family member or trusted friend. By expressing your thoughts and concerns out loud, you will be able to release some of the bad feelings which you have been bottling up.

Consider joining a support group. People with symptoms of anxiety often feel they are misunderstood. Participating in a group with other anxiety sufferers who deal with the same issues you are having can really help your mood. This is a great way to have a support network that also is full of tips.

Speak with someone about how you are feeling, whether it is a family member or friend or a medical professional. When you keep all of you thoughts and feelings bottled up, they can come back worse. Expressing your feelings will reduce anxiety and help you feel much better.

If you have to go see a therapist, then go do that. Some people increase their anxiety because they don?t have anyone to talk to, or they do not want to share their problems with someone close to them. Talking to a therapist helps to relieve anxiety.

Do your best to build great bonds with other individuals to keep your spirits up. There are a lot of places that you can meed people that have the same interests as you do. Even if you cannot leave the house, the Internet is full of places where you can meet and bond with new people.

Distracting yourself is a good way to forget about your stress. Don?t run to a self-help book that will make you focus on anxiety, instead try doing a brain teaser or crossword to keep your mind otherwise occupied. Surround yourself with people whenever you can. It is common for this to be a successful technique for forgetting worries and finding all-important distractions.

As you?ve learned, anxiety and stress aren?t wanted, but they are in our lives. Although we can not rid ourselves of it, we can effectively manage it. If you practice the advice in this guide, you will be able to equip yourself of ways to reduce anxiety and stress effectively.

As we begin 2013, take a glance at the rental market outlook for the upcoming year, and the changes that landlords around the nation are facing. Find out which paint colors are popular this year, why real estate investors are facing a new tax, and examples of why renter?s insurance is a smart decision for renters with kids.

2013 Brought New Tax for Some Real Estate Investors

Scores of people who receive rental income from properties such as apartment buildings, single-family homes and retail shops will be hit with an investment surtax of 3.8% that kicked in on Jan. 1. The so-called Medicare tax, passed as part of the Affordable Healthcare Act in 2010, won?t affect real-estate companies or those who work full-time managing their real-estate portfolio.

Charlotte Landlords Must Register With Police

Starting Tuesday, a new ordinance requires all rental property owners in Charlotte, NC to register their buildings with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, which will help the police respond quicker to emergencies and track spots in the city where crime is flourishing.

Rental Market Outlook Positive

Experts in the multifamily housing sector are feeling upbeat about the market?s prospects for 2013, but that optimism is tempered by uncertainty over the outcome of the ?fiscal cliff.? The threat of a new recession is very real, but even that could help business in apartment rentals and construction.

4 Hip Hues for 2013 and How to Use Them at Home

NEW YORK (AP) ? A nursing home and an assisted living facility are under scrutiny by state officials and an advocacy group after The Associated Press disclosed that hundreds of elderly and disabled people forced to evacuate by Superstorm Sandy were still sleeping on cots in cramped and sometimes oppressive conditions almost two months later.

New York's attorney general sent two investigators to the Bishop Henry B. Hucles Episcopal Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Center in Brooklyn last week after the AP reported that the home was swollen to nearly double its 240-bed licensed capacity with evacuees from the storm-damaged Rockaway Care Center on the Queens seashore.

As of Christmas, many of those patients were still sleeping, field-hospital style, on rows of cots squeezed into community rooms, a rehabilitation gym and the nursing home's tiny chapel.

The state's Office of Long Term Care Ombudsman also dispatched a representative to check on conditions. State Health Department officials were independently investigating how one patient walked out of the facility unnoticed on a cold Friday night, only to turn up at a hospital two days later.

Separately, a legal aid group, MFY Legal Services, is questioning why disabled and elderly residents of Belle Harbor Manor, an adult care home in Queens, were still being asked to sign over most of their monthly Social Security checks to the facility to cover room and board even though they have been flooded out of their rooms since Halloween.

After the storm, those residents were sent to an emergency shelter, then to an overcrowded hotel, and finally to a halfway house for the mentally ill. During that time, many residents have continued to pay rent to Belle Harbor Manor.

"We haven't had any services in the last three months. But he has been getting our rent. What I want to know is, 'Where is this money going?'" asked resident Alex Woods, 57. "After what we went through, he should be paying us."

MFY senior lawyer Shelly Weizman said it isn't clear whether residents are legally obligated to keep paying when they have effectively been evicted by the storm.

At Belle Harbor and many other adult care homes in New York, residents sign an agreement when they first arrive that obligates them to turn over their Social Security checks to the facility, which uses most of the money to cover housing and care. Administrators return a small portion to the residents in the form of an allowance.

Now, Weizman said, "they are paying, but they aren't getting the services. It is a confusing situation."

Residents got their latest benefit checks on Jan. 3. A few did decide to withhold their January rent payment, which for many residents was around $1,200, Weizman said.

The phone rang unanswered Friday in the administrative office at Belle Harbor Manor, as it has since the storm. The president of the nonprofit company that controls the home, Samuel Aschkenazi, declined to talk with the AP and referred questions to another board member, who didn't return messages or answer his telephone. The home's accountant also did not return calls.

A spokeswoman for Episcopal Health Services, which owns the Bishop Hucles nursing home, said administrators expect the state will give the Rockaway Care Center approval to reopen in about a week, clearing the way for patients to return.

In the meantime, the number of evacuees staying at Bishop Hucles has dropped from 187 to 136, said the spokeswoman, Penny Chin. She said that the state Health Department had been aware from the start that the nursing home had taken on so many extra patients, and had approved the situation.

More than 6,200 people were evacuated from 47 nursing and adult care homes because of the Oct. 29 storm, according to state health officials. At least hundreds are still displaced, living in different nursing homes or other temporary facilities.

Several of the Belle Harbor evacuees, who are a mix of the elderly and people with mild psychiatric disorders, told the AP that they have found the staff at the halfway house kindly, but the setting isolating and overly restrictive. They cannot have visitors in their rooms. Most haven't been able to retrieve their belongings from Belle Harbor.

It was unclear when residents might return to Belle Harbor, which is undergoing a gut renovation and replacing heating, electrical and fire suppression systems ruined in the flood. New York City's Buildings Department inspected it Friday and concluded that the work was about halfway done.

"They had been telling people they were going home in a week," said Kristine Rakowsky, a volunteer who has been serving as an advocate for the residents, visiting them daily and trying to help them with needs such as fresh clothing and medical supplies. "Now there is no end in sight."
