Gibson Performance SFT Kawasaki Teryx Exhaust Test ? ATV On ...

Gibson Performance is well known in the truck and automotive industry for its power-building, fuel-saving, high-performance exhausts. With the explosion of the side-by-side industry, Gibson saw a budding market in which to apply their performance exhaust building talents. Looking to upgrade the fun factor of our Kawasaki Teryx Sport, we decided to try one of Gibson?s exhausts for ourselves.

Technical Stuff.

We wanted to enhance performance, but didn?t want all the extra noise or added maintenance that accompanies most aftermarket exhausts. Gibson Performance?s Superflow SFT exhaust is claimed to add 7 horsepower to the Teryx. The slip-on system is constructed of stainless steel and comes in either a satin or high temperature black ceramic finish. The exhaust comes with a USFS approved spark arrestor, tucked inside its polished T-304 stainless steel end cap. Gibson also offers an accessory turn down end cap, redirecting heat and sound, while providing a different look.

The coolest feature of the Gibson system is its packing free design. Instead of relying on fiberglass to absorb sound, Gibson uses the internal design and shape of the muffler to reduce noise output, the same way they do in their high performance truck and automotive exhausts. This means you never have to repack it!

The Test

Adding the Gibson exhaust takes a few pounds off the Teryx. It took well under an hour to remove the stock exhaust and install our Gibson unit. Fitment was precise, making installation a breeze. At a glance, the satin finished Gibson exhaust looks similar to the stock exhaust, although a bit dressed up.

With the system installed, we headed to Bills 491 Off Road, located in Demossville, Kentucky to put it to the test. When we fired up the Teryx, we were greeted by the Gibson Exhaust?s low rumble. It sounds meaner, without the ear bleeding sound output we have heard on some pure race systems. The increase in power was most notable in the lower end and midrange, pulling harder from a dead stop and exiting tight turns. The extra low end also helped the Teryx pull hills a little easier lower in the RPMs.

Under deceleration we did notice some popping. The Gibson exhaust clearly flowed better than stock as it leaned the Teryx out a bit. You will need to add an aftermarket fuel management system with a richer map to take full advantage of this exhaust. We would expect this result from any freer flowing exhaust. Throttle response remained crisp with the Gibson system, in spite of the stock fuel mapping. We would expect it to get even better with a remap.

The Verdict.

The Gibson exhaust improved the Teryx power where we wanted it most. The improvement was subtle, but noticeable, even with the stock fuel injection settings. The sound output is surprisingly low for an aftermarket system, which is good even on private land. Best of all, you?ll never have to repack the Gibson muffler, reducing maintenance time and maintaining a consistently pleasant sound output.? Its price is middle-of- the-road compared to the other slip-on systems on the market. It?s not a full-on race system, but it is a nice option for the trail rider wanting a little more power, and less weight, while remaining sound sensitive.

Kansas City Chiefs v Pittsburgh SteelersGetty Images

After playing perhaps their best 60 minutes of the season, the Kansas City Chiefs still found a way to lose.

Chiefs? quarterback Matt Cassel was intercepted by Steelers? linebackers Lawrence Timmons on the second play of overtime and Shaun Suisham hammered home a 23-yard field goal to give Pittsburgh a 16-13 victory over the Chiefs on Monday night.

The Steelers (6-3) manged to overcome an early 10-0 deficit and the loss of quarterback Ben Roethlisberger to hold off the challenge from the Chiefs.

Kansas City (1-8) squandered several opportunities throughout the game and looked like they would come up short while trying to rally for a game-tying field goal in the closing minutes as well. Tight end Tony Moeaki was called for a push off on a third down conversion that put Kansas City in field goal range. Instead, they faced a 4th and 15 from their own 45-yard line. But the Chiefs manged to stay alive. Cassel was pressured and had to hop up in the pocket to avoid pressure off the edge. He fired a strike to wide receiver Dwayne Bowe for 27 yards to get the Chiefs to the Steelers? 28-yard line.

Cassel spiked the ball to stop the clock with three seconds left and Succop atoned for his earlier miss with a 46-yard field goal to send the game to overtime. The excitement was short-lived as Cassel was intercepted trying to find Bowe again in overtime.

The Chiefs did show progress Monday night as they actually led a football game for the first time this season. Jamaal Charles scored from 12 yards out to give the Chiefs an early 7-0 lead. Charles finished with 100 yards on 23 carries and scored just his third rushing touchdown this season.

An Issac Redman fumble gave the ball back to Kansas City at the Steelers? 10-yard line, but the Chiefs weren?t able to punch it in and had to settle for a 22-yard Ryan Succop field goal to take a 10-0 lead.

After a Suisham field goal, Mike Wallace made a spectacular catch of a Roethlisberger pass in the end zone to even the game at 10-10 late in the second quarter. Roethlisberger connected with Wallace from seven yards out as Wallace somehow kept the ball off the turf by holding it between his knees and reeling it before rolling out of bounds.

Roethlisberger left the game in the third quarter after being sacked by Justin Houston and Tamba Hali. He was taken to the locker room and was taken to hospital for further evaluation. Byron Leftwich replaced him for the Steelers. Roethlisberger was 9 of 18 for 84 yards and a touchdown when he left the game.

The Chiefs saw two touchdowns come off the board in the third quarter that would have put them back on top. Cassel hit Bowe on a quick screen for a 22-yard touchdown that was nullified by a holding penalty against Branden Albert.

The call proved costly as Succop missed a 33-yard field goal try that also would have given the Chiefs the lead. On the ensuing possession, Leftwich tried to pull back a throw and the ball came loose. The ball was scooped up by Houston and returned 21 yards for a touchdown that was reviewed and ultimately determined to be an incomplete pass. However, the excessive celebration penalty against the Chiefs for a group touchdown celebration still counted.

Suisham gave the Steelers a 13-10 lead early in the fourth quarter connecting on a 31-yard field goal try.

Cassel finished 11 of 26 for 154 yard and an interception.

The Chiefs host the Cincinnati Bengals next Sunday while the Steelers take on the division-rival Baltimore Ravens on Sunday Night Football on NBC.

NHLPA leader: Deal can be quick after breakthrough

(AP) ? A new NHL labor deal might not be as far off as it seems.

Steve Fehr, special counsel to the NHL Players' Association, believes the collective bargaining agreement can be wrapped up in a hurry once the sides make a breakthrough in negotiations.

"One thing (deputy commissioner) Bill Daly and I agree upon is that when the moment is right the deal could be done very quickly," Fehr said Monday during a panel discussion at the PrimeTime Sports Management Conference. "One day, three days or whatever."

Asked later if he agreed with that assertion, Daly replied: "I hope he's right."

Representatives from the NHL and NHLPA have met seven of the last nine days, but no future talks are planned. Fehr told the panel that three issues remain to be solved: the split of money, player contract rights and who pays for the damage caused by the lockout.

The contract issue in particular has flared up recently, with Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby sounding off on that topic to reporters Monday. The NHL has proposed changes to entry-level deals, arbitration, free agency and contract limits.

"The question I'd ask is: Why would we change that?" Crosby said. "I think we all think it's the most competitive league in the world. So why would you go and change that ? the way contracts go and the way teams can operate?"

Fehr and Daly discussed the player rights issue during a meeting Sunday afternoon, and the union leader doesn't believe it will ultimately keep them from striking a deal.

"We're not making any real progress in those areas," Fehr said. "It's kind of hard to believe anyone's going to drive the industry bus off a cliff over things like that, but I've seen things before that surprise me."

On a more positive note, he indicated that the sides were "fairly close" to an agreement on revenue sharing. It's believed the NHL is willing to bump the annual pot to $220 million from its current position of $140 million.

The NHL lockout started in mid-September and forced the cancellation of all regular-season games through Nov. 30. A deal likely would need to be struck early next week for a shortened season to begin Dec. 1.

On Monday, Fehr was joined on the labor issues panel by Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brian Burke, New York Giants assistant GM Kevin Abrams and Toronto Raptors vice president Ed Stefanski.

Most of the talk centered on the NHL negotiations, which kept Burke uncharacteristically quiet because team officials can be fined up to $1 million for speaking about the CBA. At one point, he quipped: "This is painful."

Fehr also spoke of his experiences with the Major League Baseball Players' Association, where he earned the nickname "Designated Optimist" during the 2002 talks, and observed that lockouts seem to have become unavoidable in sports with a salary cap.

"It's almost as if in the capped sports it's become a rewriting of the Hippocratic Oath," Fehr said. "Instead of 'first, do no harm,' it's first lockout and then we'll see what happens. I guess they've decided they can live with how the fans feel about it and they're not going to be shy about doing it."

He also hinted that NHL owners might not be taking the union seriously during these negotiations.

"It does remind me certainly of some disputes long ago in baseball," Fehr said. "In some ways, it reminds me of baseball in the '80s and maybe the early '90s before the baseball owners, in our view, accepted that the union was here to stay and wanted to make a deal with the union as opposed to fighting with the union.

"We'll see."

Atlantic City celebrates boardwalk reopening

By Cydney Long and David Chang, NBCPhiladelphia.com

Two weeks after superstorm Sandy, Atlantic City residents celebrated the reopening of the famed boardwalk on Sunday.

Elvis and Michael Jackson impersonators were joined by a crowd of nearly 200 as they strutted down a mile-long stretch of the boardwalk from the Atlantic Club Hotel and Casino to the new Revel Casino.

"Atlantic City is here, it's whole, it's ready and begging for you to come back," said Liz Cartmell of the Atlantic City Alliance.

Hundreds of hospitality employees were among those who suffered severe losses during Sandy.

"These are people who if they're not scheduled, they don't make money," said Cartmell. "They rely on tips and they rely on their hours."

Getting help
At the same time, those affected by Sandy lined up by the hundreds at nearby Bader Field. Help from the Red Cross included everything from toothpaste and shaving items to a cleaning kit, shovels, brooms and baby supplies.

More from NBCPhiladelphia.com

"We've heard their story a million times," said Don Barker of the American Red Cross. "A lot of times this is the first time that the people have gotten to tell their stories to someone. That is huge."

Volunteers, some from as far away as Mexico and Canada, came by the hundreds to help victims.

Red Cross: Sandy response 'Near flawless'

"This is the largest I've ever seen, and the largest many of us have ever heard [in terms of] the number of people affected and the need that is out there," said Robbin Stephens of the Red Cross of British Columbia.

A snowstorm hits the Northeast as residents are still struggling to pick up the pieces after Superstorm Sandy.

'Overwhelmed' and 'happy'
For Latisha Williams, who lost two weeks of work and still needs to disinfect her home from the flood, the help is a lifeline.

"I'm kind of overwhelmed, I'm real happy," said Williams, who has a newborn daughter. "I don't want to tear up or anything, but it's really a good thing to see all this big help."?

Two weeks after Superstorm Sandy hit the East Coast, New Yorkers question whether help from the Red Cross will arrive. But CEO President Gail McGovern defends what she calls a massive relief effort. NBC's Lisa Myers reports.

Atlantic City Alliance told NBC10 that in the days after the casinos reopened, occupancy lingered at 10 percent, but has edged up to nearly 50 percent thanks to the recent warm weather.
