Sony Cyber-shot TX300V inductive charging camera and dock hands-on (video)

You may have thought that Sony's Cyber-shot TX200V was the company's most powerful point-and-shoot to date, but that's not exactly true. The company has a Japan-only version of the TX200V called the TX300V, and it's quite a compelling upgrade. The camera's most apealing addition comes in the form of a wireless charging and transfer dock -- it refuels your pocket snapper through inductive charging while also wirelessly transferring images to your computer using TransferJet. It can also draw power from your computer's USB port (no AC adapter required). Oh, and it ships in the camera box.

Sadly, there aren't any plans to sell this iteration outside of Japan, and Sony's mum on pricing and availability. The camera transferred images and charged without issue during our demo (the Charge indicator lit up, at least -- we didn't stick around to watch it charge the camera). We went hands-on with the TX300V and its charging dock at CP+ in Yokohama, and you can check the camera kit out in all its glossy black glory just past the break.

AP Interview: Homecoming inspires wounded Marine (AP)

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. ? Shot through the upper back on a rooftop in Afghanistan and gasping for breath after a bullet ripped through his chest, Marine Sgt. Ben Tomlinson had a fear worse than death.

Heat and shock from the round damaged his spinal cord, paralyzing him from the chest down. This injury was so much worse than one nine months before, when he'd been hit by a mortar blast during his first tour in Afghanistan. Yet through all the pain, Tomlinson was haunted by the idea people back home wouldn't remember him, that they wouldn't even know he was hurt.

"That's the worst fear for everyone that gets deployed," said Tomlinson, who now uses a wheelchair. "It's that no one is thinking about them."

Tomlinson's hometown of Jacksonville, in northeast Alabama, made sure he wouldn't feel forgotten, staging a welcome home celebration veteran groups say should be a national model now that fighting has ended in Iraq. While St. Louis is the only large city to hold a major parade for returning veterans, thousands of people lined the streets of Jacksonville and packed the town square to greet Tomlinson upon his return from the war, waving flags and giving money to help make his home more wheelchair accessible.

"We need this to happen much more around the country, but (I) do not believe it actually occurs as much as it is needed because the wars have been going for such a long period of time," said Vietnam veteran John Stewart, who heads Operation Welcome Home in Inverness, Fla.

More than being just a one-day morale boost, Tomlinson said the lavish homecoming in the city of 7,700 people inspired him to work harder on his rehabilitation so friends and neighbors knew he is trying hard to get better.

"This is not the way I am going to be forever," said Tomlinson, 24, working out with dumbbells in the TV room at his home. He's getting stronger little by little, his biceps filling out after months shuttling between hospitals and doctor's appointments, and he's hopeful of walking again one day.

Tomlinson played football and baseball and ran track at Jacksonville High School before graduating in 2006 and going to Mississippi College to play football. But college ball just wasn't the same as high school athletics, and he took a buddy's suggestion to consider the Marines. He was interested in joining a Force Reconnaissance squad, the "baddest of the bad," as Tomlinson put it. These are the Marines on the tip of the spear, the troops who go first into hostile areas.

"It sounded pretty intense," said Tomlinson. It was.

Tomlinson arrived in Afghanistan in May 2009. Three months later, while securing a road during a drug raid in a marketplace, a mortar hit the top of a building near where he was standing. Shrapnel peppered his body.

"I got a piece in the neck, a piece hit me in the nose, but the worst part of that was getting a piece stuck in the radial nerve in my arm," said Tomlinson. "There's really no relief from pain when you have something stuck in your nerve."

Surgery followed, and Tomlinson was back on duty three weeks later after taking a cast off his arm with the help of a medic, who removed his stitches. Tomlinson's tour of duty ended but he was back in Afghanistan for another seven-month stint by November 2010.

With only one or two missions left on his second tour, Tomlinson was atop a roof in an Afghan village controlled by the Taliban while other troops looked for weapons and bomb-making materials.

"We were doing that for about five or six hours. I want to say it was the middle of the day, and I got up to move and as soon as I got up ...," Tomlinson said. "It wasn't like I heard anything or really felt anything. It was like a sudden shock to my body, and then my vision went kind of obscured, and I couldn't move and I just started falling back and `boom,' hit the roof, and that's when I realized I'd probably been hit."

The slug entered the back of Tomlinson's left shoulder near the base of his neck and traveled to his chest, damaging his spine and leaving him unable to move from the chest down. Evacuated from Afghanistan first to Germany and then the United States, he spent months at a hospital in Tampa, Fla., before returning home to Alabama on Jan. 18 to a hero's welcome: People lined the roads for miles leading from the airport to Jacksonville, and U.S. flags were everywhere. Businesses all over town put out welcome home signs.

Several thousand people filled the town square for a ceremony, and some 800 students and faculty from Jacksonville High greeted him at his house, which is directly across the street from the school.

"All I could say was, `Wow,'" Tomlinson said.

With such a welcome home, Tomlinson said he knew he hadn't been forgotten ? his worst fears weren't realized.

"People I didn't even know were thinking about me when this happened," he said.

Stewart, himself a Vietnam veteran, said such receptions can only help troops coming home from multiple deployments after a decade of fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"Everyone is familiar with the horrendous reception we Vietnam veterans received when returning from the war and we must never, ever let that happen again," he said. "We must honor our heroes. We must remember their sacrifices."

Health and Fitness Articles ? Blog Archive ? Get over Hemorrhoids ...

Hemorrhoids are a condition that affects people from all walks of life. Hemorrhoid advice is rarely dispensed, and many people don?t know how to treat hemorrhoids when they have them. However, you?ll soon have the opportunity to take in as much advice as you?d like. The article below will provide you with hemorrhoid advice that could shock you.

It is possible to push a hemorrhoid back into the anus yourself. This treatment should only be performed for small hemorrhoids and with gentleness and care. Hemorrhoids are better protected inside of the rectum, and therefore, you aren?t as likely to suffer any irritation or bleeding.

See a doctor if you?re not sure of what you have. A hemorrhoid can easily be mistaken for a polyp, and that can cause unnecessary worry. Be sure to make a doctors appointment just to take care of any issues before they potentially worsen.

You can find relief from hemorrhoid pain in a number of places. Experts have been known to recommend soaking in a sitz bath multiple times per day, for 5 to 10 minutes each time. Try using a cold compress on the area of inflammation for some additional relief.

Use a hemorrhoid cream sparingly. Creams can take the pain away, but will not do anything for the inflammation and the swelling. If you must use these creams for a greater amount of time than one week, you should ensure your doctor is fine with this. Avoid further pain and damage by limiting the use of these creams.

Eat foods that are high in fiber. When there is more fiber present in your food, you will have softer stools that are easier to pass. If your stools are soft, you will not need to strain when going to the bathroom, and will therefore spare yourself significant pain. There are supplements that contain fiber that can be purchased and used as a stool softener.

Fight the desire to scratch even the biggest, itchiest hemorrhoid. By scratching the area, you may be setting yourself up to bacterial infections and tissue damage. If you can no longer take the itching, use a wet cloth to gently cleanse the area. Itching is not always a sign of inflammation or swelling. You may just need to clean the area. This is where a wet paper towel or a rag can really bring some much needed relief.

To help minimize swelling and pain, make a paste out of water and powdered myrrh. Mix one teaspoon each of water and powdered myrrh into a thick paste. Apply this paste to your hemorrhoids and let it sit for a half an hour. You can find powdered myrrh in stores that sell beauty and health products.

Hemorrhoids are a common ailment, especially when situations stress certain areas of the body. This is due to an increase in anal pressure. If you apply what you?ve read here and create a prevention strategy, or treatment plan if you already suffer from hemorrhoids, you?ll find that you?re less likely to develop this condition or are better equipped to treat it.

Europe's cold snap claims more victims, travel hit (Reuters)

KIEV/LONDON (Reuters) ? Bitterly cold weather sweeping across Europe claimed more victims on Sunday and brought widespread disruption to transport services, with warnings that the chilling temperatures would remain into next week.

Hundreds have lost their lives in eastern Europe as freezing weather sweeps across the continent westwards, while major airports warned that services would be delayed or cancelled.

Steven Keates, a weather forecaster at Britain's Met Office, said the severe wintry conditions were expected to last, and spread to other areas.

"It will still be very cold, maybe not quite the exceptional temperatures we've seen this last week, but still very cold," he told Reuters, saying the current front which brought snow and ice to Britain overnight was now heading to Belgium and Germany.

"(It will be) perhaps turning increasingly unsettled across southern and eastern Europe, so that will probably bring a risk of snow for Italy across to Greece and up round the Balkan countries."

Nine more deaths from cold were registered in Ukraine overnight, emergencies services said on Sunday, taking the death toll to 131 from a nine-day cold spell which has brought freezing temperatures to the ex-Soviet republic.

A statement from the Emergencies Ministry said 1,800 people were receiving hospital treatment for cold-related ailments.

The cold spell - the most severe for Ukraine in six years with night temperatures down as low as minus 33 Celsius (minus 27 Fahrenheit) in parts - has tested the country's social network to its limits.

Many of the dead were homeless people with bodies being found in the streets under snow, in rivers and in doorways. Metro stations in the capital Kiev have become sanctuaries overnight for the homeless to find warmth.

More than 3,000 heated tents have been set up around the country to provide makeshift accommodation and dispense food and drinks to homeless people.

Eight more people had frozen to death over the past 24 hours in Poland, bringing the death toll there to 53 since the cold snap began, PAP news agency reported National Police Headquarters as saying.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has now asked local authorities to waive the ban on admitting inebriated individuals to homeless shelters.

The extreme cold had also caused the death of at least three people in Hungary, ambulance spokesman Pal Gyorfi was quoted as saying by the national news agency MTI.

The demand for ambulances was up 20 percent on a usual day with 3,000 calls, Gyorfi said in a statement.

HEATHROW SERVICES CANCELLED

Airline services from Britain and France were hit as the chilling weather moved west, prompting severe weather warnings to be issued across much of both countries.

London's Heathrow, Europe's busiest airport, said it would run just 70 percent of normal services on Sunday as more than 15cm (6 inches) of snow fell in parts of England overnight and temperatures dropped well to almost -10 Celsius.

"This decision ensures that the greatest number of passengers can fly with the minimum amount of disruption," said Heathrow Chief Operating Officer Normand Boivin.

London's Gatwick Airport said it had received 8 cm of snow overnight but it had remained open, and would be running all scheduled flights. However, many of Britain's other airports were forced to shut runways overnight and warned there could be further disruption on Sunday.

Rail services were affected and many roads were left impassable, and sections of motorways near London were brought to a standstill, forcing some divers to abandon their vehicles. Police said the main roads into the southern port of Dover had also been closed for a while.

The first winter snow fell in Paris overnight coating the Eiffel Tower, and more showers due throughout Sunday. The French capital's main airports were also expecting problems and advised passengers to check with the airlines before travelling.

Meanwhile the death toll rose to four, after a 12-year old boy died of hypothermia on Saturday after falling into a frozen pond in eastern France and a homeless person was found dead in the northeast.

(AP) ? Romans bewildered by their city's first big snowfall in 26 years used government-issued shovels to clear sidewalks, and kitchen utensils to clear windshields Saturday.

The snow ? up to 8 inches (20 centimeters) deep in some neighborhoods ? made buses and taxis scarce. It also shut down tourist sites including the Colosseum, where the tiers which once held cheering spectators for gladiator fights where hidden by snow.

Snow blanketed the dome of St. Peter's Basilica and crowned the ancient arches in the Roman Forum, but its weight toppled trees, sending some of them crashing onto empty parked cars.

Saturday's storm, coming a day after a light snowfall, combined for the biggest accumulations since 1986, and left many motorists stranded for hours on city's streets.

The consumer advocate group ADOC, contending the city failed to adequately sand or plow highways, urged drivers who were stranded to file damage claims.

Volunteers for the national Civil Protection agency handed out 4,000 shovels in several main piazzas to Romans trying to clear their streets of snow and slush before a forecast nighttime freeze.

One woman in a hilly section of Rome used her toddler daughter's plastic beach trowel to scoop a mound of snow off the seat of the family's motor scooter, although few were brave or foolhardy enough to use scooters on icy cobblestones. Other Romans used their hands or spatulas to clear windshields, and sponge mops to clear sidewalks.

Rome's mayor extended the shutdown of schools through Monday and said city offices would also be closed Monday.

Mayor Gianni Alemanno appealed to any private citizens with shovels to help clear the city.

His appeal seemed a bit exaggerated to one Roman couple strolling in Villa Doria Pamphili, where children rolled snowballs until they were the size of soccer balls. Now a city park, the villa was once the summer estate of nobles, and hundreds of Romans poured in to romp in the snow after someone broke the lock on a gate that authorities had closed for fear the public might be injured on the villa's hilly slopes.

"Between the army and Civil Protection volunteers, that should suffice, although a little bit of goodwill wouldn't hurt," said Daniela De Angelis of the appeal for citizen shovelers. Massimo Buongarzoni said he used a broom and dustpan to clear the entrance to their apartment building.

In the Circus Maximus, the sprawling, sloping grounds where chariot races were once held, Romans and tourists tossed snowballs.

While the city struggled with the unusually cold and snowy weather, Italians to the north continued to dig out from up more than 6 feet (2 meters) of snow and shiver in frigid temperatures. The farm lobby Coldiretti said that 2 million cows and pigs were at risk because supplies of feed couldn't reach them and some frozen pipes for water troughs had burst.

It estimated about euro50 million ($65 million) in losses already to crops, including artichokes, cabbages and radicchio, and warned that olive trees and grape vines would sustain significant damage. Olive oil and wine production are two mainstays of Italian agriculture.

No deaths were blamed on the snow in Rome, but several weather-linked deaths occurred elsewhere, including two in the nearby countryside.

Hundreds of passengers on commuter and long-distance trains complained they were trapped for hours inside, often in unheated cars, after snow and ice blocked tracks Friday evening in several areas of Italy.
