Saturday night football plan stuns Scottish fans

SCOTTISH football bosses have indicated that some televised SPFL games will take place on Saturday evenings, with Celtic?s match against Ross County the first to be screened at 5.15pm.

After the success of last season, matches will continue to be held on Friday nights but the new plans have angered fans, some of whom have already made travel plans ahead of the season?s opening fixtures.

Speaking to The Scottish Sun newspaper, Kevin Graham of the Affiliation of Registered Celtic Supporters? Clubs claimed that fans could lose money, saying: ?Our supporters travel from all over Britain and Ireland and have already made plans to come to the first match.

?They?ve booked ferries and hotels - now this has been announced with three weeks? notice.

?We will be looking to talk to the new league about this.?

This is the first season that BT Sport will be televising Scottish games and along with Sky and BBC Alba, they have given their support to the Saturday tea-time slot - which is already used for some English Premier League games.

Hampden chiefs are reportedly interested in exploring new avenues and ideas and police have given the Saturday evening games plan the go-ahead.

With Kilmarnock set to travel to Motherwell on the evening of Saturday August 31st for a 5.30pm kick-off, Rugby Park supporters chief Sandy Armour told The Sun: ?I?m not keen on a Saturday night kick-off.

?Motherwell is only an hour away, but you don?t want to be travelling long distances at that time on a Saturday.?

Partick Thistle will kick-off their top-flight campaign with a Friday night game against Dundee United at Firhill, and Rangers? clash with Airdrie has been switched to a 7.45pm kick-off on Friday August 23rd.

Lunchtime kick-off times have also been retained, with the first Edinburgh Derby on Sunday 11th August and Celtic?s match away to Aberdeen on Saturday August 17th both given early afternoon start times.

Rugby Union: Youngs calls on England heroes

ABOVE: Scrum-half Ben Youngs says England are the fittest

England have not lost to France at ?Twickenham since 2007

17th February 2013

By Gary Fitzgerald

ENGLAND must turn themselves into world rugby?s Supermen ? if they want to dominate again.

That?s the claim from scrum-half Ben Youngs, who insists he and his team-mates simply have to become the ?fittest team? on the Union planet.

Leicester star Youngs also admits that ?facing France on Saturday scares him, even though England have smashed the Scots and Irish already in this Six Nations and are on course for Grand Slam glory.

Coaches Stuart Lancaster, Andy ?Farrell and Graham Rowntree are hell-bent on an ultra-strict work ethic and Youngs insists England?s players have never been in better shape. But he knows they can be even fitter.

He said: ?We?re certainly fitter than we were a year ago. The South Africa tour was a wake-up call in a sense, in terms of being able to generate intensity.

?If we want to play at the intensity we ?produced against New Zealand and Scotland, we have to have the levels of fitness to deliver in the last minutes as well as the first.

?We need to play a high-tempo game when conditions permit and to do that you have to be very fit.

?Our conditioning is first-class in this set-up. There?s also a peer pressure that ?ensures you never fall off the radar.

?We have to take responsibility for our own levels while keeping that peer pressure on colleagues to ensure nobody falls behind.

?Stuart told us 12 months ago that if we want to play this style as the norm, then we have to become the fittest Test squad in the world.?

England have not lost to France at ?Twickenham since 2007 with the two ?countries sharing the spoils in their four ?recent meetings.

But Leicester ace Youngs knows too well just how unpredictable the French can be ? and that despite losing their opening two games, they will be dangerous opponents.

He said: ?The bottom line for me is that playing France is scary. When you face their players in Heineken Cup ties, you learn fast that French players can make you look ?foolish if you take your eye off the ball.

?What can we expect? I?m not sure, and that?s why I use the word scary. What I do know is they will try to win the forward ?battle and then try to throw the ball around.

?But our forwards have been outstanding in the opening two games, especially in ?horrendous conditions in Dublin. So I think it?s going to be a very interesting contest ?between the two packs.?

Spy planes check their vision on these parking lot-sized focus charts

When you go to the eye doctor, you look at a chart and tell them what you can see. It's the same way for the cameras on spy planes ? but their charts have to be big enough to see from 20,000 feet.

There are an unknown number of these striking focus charts scattered around the U.S., reports the Center for Land Use Interpretation (CLUI). They have been in use since they were first put together in the 1950s and '60s ? when the development of spy planes like the SR-71 Blackbird and U-2 necessitated careful calibration of their onboard cameras.

The charts differ from one another, but all share some characteristics: large white bars painted at known sizes and distances, sometimes parallel, sometimes perpendicular to each other.

The result is an easy way to tell whether a camera can make out the details it's supposed to from high in the air, or whether adjustment is necessary. Other countries have them as well ? something which attracted the notice of satellite imagery buffs several months ago.

However, the digital cameras in today's drones and planes can be easily adjusted on the fly, making these charts somewhat unnecessary ? but a few are still maintained, possibly for adjusting legacy equipment.

One notable exception is the Curiosity Mars rover, which has one of these bar charts on its body (as well as a penny) for checking the focus of its MAHLI camera.

There are several more examples of these interesting patterns at the CLUI post, as well as a bit more history on the military project and technical details of the charts.

LA Opera 2013-2014 Season To Include 'Einstein On The Beach' & 'Billy Budd'

LOS ANGELES -- The Los Angeles Opera's 2013-14 season will include the company premiere of Philip Glass' "Einstein on the Beach" and a revival of Britten's "Billy Budd" as part of celebrations of the 100th anniversary of the composer's birth.

The LA Opera said Tuesday that "Einstein" will open Oct. 11, with dances by Lucinda Childs in the 1976 Robert Wilson production.

Britten's "Billy Budd," part of "Britten 100/LA: A Celebration," will open Feb. 22, 2014. The Francesco Zambello production from London's Royal Opera was first seen in Los Angeles in 2000. Liam Bonner makes his role debut as Billy, with Richard Croft as Captain Vere and Greer Grimsley as John Claggert in his company debut.

Britten was born Nov. 22, 1913.

General director Placido Domingo will conduct the opening night performance of Bizet's "Carmen" on Sept. 21. Patricia Bardon sings the title role, with Brandon Jovanovich as Don Jose and Dwayne Croft as Escamillo.

There will be a new production of Donizetti's "Lucia di Lammermoor" starring Albina Shagimuratova and opening March 15, 2014, with the director still to be decided.

The season includes revivals of Verdi's "Falstaff" with Roberto Frontali (opening Nov. 9), Mozart's "Die Zauberfloete (The Magic Flute)" (Nov. 23), and Massenet's "Thais," which features Domingo in the baritone role of Athanael (May 17, 2014).

Music director James Conlon will lead four productions at Dorothy Chandler Pavilion and the world premiere of Alexander Prior's community opera "Jonah and the Whale" at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels on March 21, 2014.

Fitsby Puts Real Money on the Line to Make Sure You and Your Friends Go to the Gym

Fitsby Puts Real Money on the Line to Make Sure You and Your Friends Go to the Gym Android: If you need a little motivation to make it to the gym, you could always think about your health?or, with Fitsby, you can think about the money your friends will wave in your face if you skip out on your workouts. The app lets you wager with friends that you'll work out regularly, and when you do, you earn points?not to mention the money your friends who didn't go put into the pot.

If the app sounds a bit like previously mentioned Gympact, which just launched for Android last week, it should. The principle is the same. Some of you were concerned about putting your money where your workouts were when it came to strangers who might exploit the system, and Fitsby eliminates that problem by connecting you with your friends and letting you all pool your money together for a group challenge.

You can, of course, challenge other users of the app or participate in public challenges if you want, but the app is best when used with a small group of dedicated friends who want to support one another's workout and exercise goals. You still have to check into an approved gym or exercise center for the app to work (the service uses a location's name in Google Places to verify that it's actually a gym, fitness center, or other appropriate location), and if you win, your friends' money will be sent to you via Paypal. For more details on how the app works, check out their FAQ. Fitsby is free, and currently only available for Android. The developers say an iOS version is on the way soon.

Although Anxiety Is Common, It Is Not Necessary - Health Care

In today?s hectic world, many people suffer from a certain level of stress, but it should always be manageable. Stress can make anxiety worse, especially if ignored. Anxiety is a long-term problem that puts the body at risk of damage or even disease thanks to the physical strain it exerts. Read on for more information on ways to deal with anxiety and how you can effectively deal with it.

Even though you?re not able to go on a vacation every week, you should at least take one day off. During your day off, try getting out of the normal routine you have. Go fishing, camping, hiking or whatever else you find relaxing.

Ensure that you take notice of any medical advice given, and ensure they are updated as to your progress. It?s always important to let your doctor know whether the treatment you are receiving is working or not. Since your doctor only sees you occasionally, this communication is the key to successful treatment.

External stimuli causes the majority of anxiety, but some folks do have a genetic predisposition that enables the feeling. If you think you may be genetically inclined to be anxious, it is important to discuss it with your doctor before symptoms arise.

High anxiety levels can cause your breathing to become abnormal. In these situations, focusing entirely on your breathing will enable you to get it back under control. Count in your head while breathing and allow relaxing feelings to come. If you really want to enhance the efforts of deep breathing, find a quite spot and sit there while you breathe.

Think about acupuncture to control anxiety. This is used for many reasons since it relaxes your entire body. And, if it is for a medical reason, some insurance companies may even cover some visits to an acupuncturist.

Exercise consistently if you suffer from anxiety. Exercise is nature?s stress buster and can relieve symptoms of anxiety. If exercise is an option for you, target a half hour of aerobic exercise each day or every other day.

If you are among the millions of others suffering with chronic anxiety, consider a helpful talk with a family member or trusted friend. By expressing your thoughts and concerns out loud, you will be able to release some of the bad feelings which you have been bottling up.

Consider joining a support group. People with symptoms of anxiety often feel they are misunderstood. Participating in a group with other anxiety sufferers who deal with the same issues you are having can really help your mood. This is a great way to have a support network that also is full of tips.

Speak with someone about how you are feeling, whether it is a family member or friend or a medical professional. When you keep all of you thoughts and feelings bottled up, they can come back worse. Expressing your feelings will reduce anxiety and help you feel much better.

If you have to go see a therapist, then go do that. Some people increase their anxiety because they don?t have anyone to talk to, or they do not want to share their problems with someone close to them. Talking to a therapist helps to relieve anxiety.

Do your best to build great bonds with other individuals to keep your spirits up. There are a lot of places that you can meed people that have the same interests as you do. Even if you cannot leave the house, the Internet is full of places where you can meet and bond with new people.

Distracting yourself is a good way to forget about your stress. Don?t run to a self-help book that will make you focus on anxiety, instead try doing a brain teaser or crossword to keep your mind otherwise occupied. Surround yourself with people whenever you can. It is common for this to be a successful technique for forgetting worries and finding all-important distractions.

As you?ve learned, anxiety and stress aren?t wanted, but they are in our lives. Although we can not rid ourselves of it, we can effectively manage it. If you practice the advice in this guide, you will be able to equip yourself of ways to reduce anxiety and stress effectively.

As we begin 2013, take a glance at the rental market outlook for the upcoming year, and the changes that landlords around the nation are facing. Find out which paint colors are popular this year, why real estate investors are facing a new tax, and examples of why renter?s insurance is a smart decision for renters with kids.

2013 Brought New Tax for Some Real Estate Investors

Scores of people who receive rental income from properties such as apartment buildings, single-family homes and retail shops will be hit with an investment surtax of 3.8% that kicked in on Jan. 1. The so-called Medicare tax, passed as part of the Affordable Healthcare Act in 2010, won?t affect real-estate companies or those who work full-time managing their real-estate portfolio.

Charlotte Landlords Must Register With Police

Starting Tuesday, a new ordinance requires all rental property owners in Charlotte, NC to register their buildings with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, which will help the police respond quicker to emergencies and track spots in the city where crime is flourishing.

Rental Market Outlook Positive

Experts in the multifamily housing sector are feeling upbeat about the market?s prospects for 2013, but that optimism is tempered by uncertainty over the outcome of the ?fiscal cliff.? The threat of a new recession is very real, but even that could help business in apartment rentals and construction.

4 Hip Hues for 2013 and How to Use Them at Home

Color forecasters have released their picks for the new year. Included are Emerald,?Tender Shoots (a bright leafy green), Grayed Jade (a soft tonal green), Dusk Blue (a sea blue) and Monaco Blue (a deep, darker blue). See how you can use these shades in your property this year.

Got Kids? Here are 10 Reasons You Need Apartment Insurance Too

Apartment insurance is not just for burglaries and fires. It also covers you for a litany of mishaps and careless mistakes, ranging from aggressive behavior of your bad-tempered border terrier to flat-screen-frying power surges. Here?s how renter?s insurance can help parents plan for the unplannable.

(AP Photo/Kathy Willens, File)

NEW YORK (AP) ? A nursing home and an assisted living facility are under scrutiny by state officials and an advocacy group after The Associated Press disclosed that hundreds of elderly and disabled people forced to evacuate by Superstorm Sandy were still sleeping on cots in cramped and sometimes oppressive conditions almost two months later.

New York's attorney general sent two investigators to the Bishop Henry B. Hucles Episcopal Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Center in Brooklyn last week after the AP reported that the home was swollen to nearly double its 240-bed licensed capacity with evacuees from the storm-damaged Rockaway Care Center on the Queens seashore.

As of Christmas, many of those patients were still sleeping, field-hospital style, on rows of cots squeezed into community rooms, a rehabilitation gym and the nursing home's tiny chapel.

The state's Office of Long Term Care Ombudsman also dispatched a representative to check on conditions. State Health Department officials were independently investigating how one patient walked out of the facility unnoticed on a cold Friday night, only to turn up at a hospital two days later.

Separately, a legal aid group, MFY Legal Services, is questioning why disabled and elderly residents of Belle Harbor Manor, an adult care home in Queens, were still being asked to sign over most of their monthly Social Security checks to the facility to cover room and board even though they have been flooded out of their rooms since Halloween.

After the storm, those residents were sent to an emergency shelter, then to an overcrowded hotel, and finally to a halfway house for the mentally ill. During that time, many residents have continued to pay rent to Belle Harbor Manor.

"We haven't had any services in the last three months. But he has been getting our rent. What I want to know is, 'Where is this money going?'" asked resident Alex Woods, 57. "After what we went through, he should be paying us."

MFY senior lawyer Shelly Weizman said it isn't clear whether residents are legally obligated to keep paying when they have effectively been evicted by the storm.

At Belle Harbor and many other adult care homes in New York, residents sign an agreement when they first arrive that obligates them to turn over their Social Security checks to the facility, which uses most of the money to cover housing and care. Administrators return a small portion to the residents in the form of an allowance.

Now, Weizman said, "they are paying, but they aren't getting the services. It is a confusing situation."

Residents got their latest benefit checks on Jan. 3. A few did decide to withhold their January rent payment, which for many residents was around $1,200, Weizman said.

The phone rang unanswered Friday in the administrative office at Belle Harbor Manor, as it has since the storm. The president of the nonprofit company that controls the home, Samuel Aschkenazi, declined to talk with the AP and referred questions to another board member, who didn't return messages or answer his telephone. The home's accountant also did not return calls.

A spokeswoman for Episcopal Health Services, which owns the Bishop Hucles nursing home, said administrators expect the state will give the Rockaway Care Center approval to reopen in about a week, clearing the way for patients to return.

In the meantime, the number of evacuees staying at Bishop Hucles has dropped from 187 to 136, said the spokeswoman, Penny Chin. She said that the state Health Department had been aware from the start that the nursing home had taken on so many extra patients, and had approved the situation.

More than 6,200 people were evacuated from 47 nursing and adult care homes because of the Oct. 29 storm, according to state health officials. At least hundreds are still displaced, living in different nursing homes or other temporary facilities.

Several of the Belle Harbor evacuees, who are a mix of the elderly and people with mild psychiatric disorders, told the AP that they have found the staff at the halfway house kindly, but the setting isolating and overly restrictive. They cannot have visitors in their rooms. Most haven't been able to retrieve their belongings from Belle Harbor.

It was unclear when residents might return to Belle Harbor, which is undergoing a gut renovation and replacing heating, electrical and fire suppression systems ruined in the flood. New York City's Buildings Department inspected it Friday and concluded that the work was about halfway done.

"They had been telling people they were going home in a week," said Kristine Rakowsky, a volunteer who has been serving as an advocate for the residents, visiting them daily and trying to help them with needs such as fresh clothing and medical supplies. "Now there is no end in sight."

Shell, Coast Guard seek to contain grounded Alaska drilling rig ...

Authorities haven?t been able to land people on the Shell rig Kulluk for a more extensive look because of the challenging marine winter weather, Coast Guard Captain Paul Mehler said. Based on observations from planes flying over the site yesterday, the rig is stable and there don?t appear to be any leaks, Mehler said during a news conference Tuesday.

?The Kulluk is sound,? Mehler said. ?There is no sign of a breach of hull. There is no sign of oil.?

The rig was stranded on the coast of Sitkalidak Island, about 60 miles (97 kilometers) southwest of the town of Kodiak, according to a Coast Guard statement earlier yesterday. The rig went ashore at 8:48 p.m. Alaska time on Dec. 31, about 38 minutes after the last towline to the rig was cut to ensure the safety of the nine-member crew of the tugboat Alert.

The Kulluk has approximately 139,000 gallons of ultra-low- sulfur diesel and 12,000 gallons of combined lube oil and hydraulic fluid on board. An initial Coast Guard helicopter flight over the grounded rig didn?t detect any visible sign of a spill. More inspections were planned, while the approximately 250 people involved in response efforts were hampered by the winds and high seas, according to the statement.

Environmental Monitoring

The state of Alaska will continue to monitor the rig site for environmental damage, said Steve Russell an official with the Department of Environmental Conservation. There are potential impacts to wildlife, native Alaskans and recreational users, Russell said. The land on the coast near the rig site is owned by the Old Harbor Native Corporation, he said.

Environmental groups yesterday called for a halt to the company?s efforts to drill in Arctic waters.

?Shell and its contractors are no match for Alaska?s weather and sea conditions either during drilling operations or during transit,? Lois N. Epstein, Arctic program director for The Wilderness Society, said in a statement posted on the group?s website. ?Shell?s costly drilling experiment in the Arctic Ocean needs to be stopped by the federal government or by Shell itself given the unacceptably high risks it poses to both humans and the environment.?

Shell released a statement last night saying that the incident didn?t involve drilling operations and that there was no threat of a crude oil release.

?We quickly mobilized experts to respond to this situation,? Shell said in its statement. ?The Shell emergency response assets and contingencies that were deployed over the last four days represent the best available in the world.?

Shell Investment

Shell has invested $4.5 billion in offshore leases and equipment and fought at least 50 lawsuits from environmental groups to begin drilling in the Chukchi and Beaufort seas last year, the first wells in U.S. Arctic waters in about 20 years. The Kulluk was in need of maintenance after starting a well in the Beaufort Sea, Smith said.

The other Arctic drilling vessel used by Shell last year, the Noble Discoverer owned by Noble Corp., was held by the Coast Guard in Seward, Alaska, in November after it lost propulsion and inspectors found safety discrepancies. That ship will be towed to Seattle for repairs, a Coast Guard spokesman said.

Sea ice ended Arctic drilling last year.

Shell expects to resume drilling once sea ice withdraws later this year, Smith said. Last year?s drilling plans were crimped by damage to a dome designed to capture any underwater spill.

Crew Evacuated

The Kulluk was en route to Seattle for repairs after drilling off the Alaska coast. The rig had been adrift and then was temporarily brought back under control before it went aground. The Kulluk?s crew were evacuated Dec. 29 as a precaution, Curtis Smith, an Alaska-based Shell spokesman, said in a telephone interview Dec. 30.

The Coast Guard dispatched a cutter and rescue helicopters Dec. 28 after the Shell towing vessel Aiviq reported that its tow line to the Kulluk had parted in heavy seas, the Coast Guard said in a statement. Aiviq recaptured the barge, then went adrift itself when all four diesel engines quit because of contaminated fuel, Smith said.

A second Shell ship, the Nanuq, had joined the 360-foot (110-meter) Aiviq in towing the drilling rig south. The Nanuq is equipped to contain any oil spill, according to a Shell fact sheet. The company has also dispatched a tug, the Guardsman, and the Klamath, a 47-foot skimming vessel, to help in the recovery.

Both the Coast Guard and Shell will investigate why the tow boats lost control of the Kulluk, authorities said during a telephone news conference yesterday.

?There will be an investigation into the cause of this incident once we have the situation under control,? said Sean Churchfield, Shell?s Alaska operations manager.
